are one of the biggest groups in rock and roll history. Formed in 1961, the original lineup consisted of brothers Carl, Dennis, and Brian Wilson, their cousin, and friend Al Jardine. With their hit, "Surfin' U.S.A.," the group established the "California sound" of surfing, cars and having fun while being young.
The group was known for its vocal harmonies, but each member got a chance to shine. For Al Jardine, he sang lead on one of the Beach Boys' biggest hits, "Help Me, Rhonda," as well as "Then I Kissed Her," and "Cottonfields."
Jardine exited the Beach Boys in 1998 following Carl Wilson's death, and has spent most of the time working with Brian Wilson. On May 30, Jardine shocked everyone by surprise releasing his new EP, Islands In The Sun.
The collection is Jardine's first new solo project since 2010's A Postcard From California. The title track features Al's son, Matt Jardineand guest vocals from Beach Boy Bruce Johnson.
"'Islands In The Sun' captures that special magic we felt and sang about on Beach Boys songs like 'Island Girl' and 'Kokomo,'" says Al in a press release. "It was inspired by the enchanting calypso sounds of Harry Belafonte and Bob Marley's laid-back reggae vibe. Now wouldn't it be fun if we could bottle up the sun!"
The collection also features a previously unreleased duet with Neil Young called "My Plane Leaves Tomorrow (Au Revoir)." The song details the conflict of sending troops off to fight in foreign wars and features Flea performing the military bugle call "Taps."
The EP also includes Jardine's reworking of The Coasters' 1956 hit "Smokey Joe's Café" –a new song called "Highway 101 (Rosarita Beach Café)"—and "Crumple Car," a revamped version of a forgotten tune from the 1978 surf movie Big Wednesday.
Al Jardine will embark on a summer tour with Brian Wilson's touring band, The Pet Sounds Band, performing classic Beach Boys hits and fan favorites from the group's '70s albums.60s Music Icon Surprise Releases First New Music In 15 Years first appeared on Parade on May 30, 2025
