First-year head coach Kellen Moore confident in young Saints QB room
This year's New Orleans Saints quarterbacks room doesn't look like last year's QB room. Derek Carr's retirement will be formalized in June, and the depth chart will shake out one way or another with Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, or Jake Haener on top of it -- and Hunter Dekkers pushing those on the outside looking in for a backup job. It's a much younger room. Shough and Dekkers are both rookies. Rattler started six games last season, and Haener didn't make it to halftime in his lone start. You could make the argument that the Saints need a veteran in there to show the young guys the ropes.
But that isn't an argument Kellen Moore is buying. The first-year head coach spoke with reporters Monday before the Saints Hall of Fame golf tournament and expressed confidence in the young room, saying he's done it before, and that having so many former NFL quarterbacks on the coaching staff makes up for not having an experienced mentor in the locker room. This isn't a new approach for him. Just look at his quarterbacks since Moore began calling plays with the Dallas Cowboys back in 2019:
2019: Dak Prescott (age 26), backed up by Cooper Rush (26)
2020: Dak Prescott (age 27), backed up by Andy Dalton (33), Ben DiNucci (24), and Garrett Gilbert (29)
2021: Dak Prescott (age 28), backed up by Cooper Rush (28)
2022: Dak Prescott (age 29), backed up by Cooper Rush (29)
2023: Justin Herbert (age 25), backed up by Easton Stick (28)
2024: Jalen Hurts (age 26), backed up by Kenny Pickett (26) and Tanner McKee (24)
So for most of his own experience as a coach in the NFL, Moore has worked with younger quarterbacks (one small exception being Dalton's nine-game stint as the starter in 2020 after Prescott suffered a season-ending injury). Whether it's a rookie like Shough or a second- or third-year pro like Rattler or Haener starting this season, it's nothing new for him. And as Moore himself pointed out, having former pro quarterbacks on his coaching staff like Doug Nussmeier and Scott Tolzien goes a long way towards bridging the gap.
There's one other factor at play here we should mention, though Moore wouldn't admit it himself. If the kids stink it up this year and the Saints stumble in the first or second overall pick in the 2026 draft, that wouldn't be the worst thing. Having someone like Carson Wentz or Ryan Tannehill coming in off the bench and winning five or six games would dash that plan and leave New Orleans in the same purgatory they've been stuck in the last few years. You'd like to think Shough or Rattler can get the Saints back to the top of a weak division but that's no sure thing. So long as you're willing to practice patience and accept the consolation of a premium draft pick, this might be the best path forward.

What is the Texans' biggest reason for optimism in 2025?

Entering Year 3 of the DeMeco Ryans' era, the Houston Texans are poised for a season to remember. Quarterback C.J. Stroud should feel more comfortable in Nick Caley's offense, while Pro Bowl wide receiver Nico Collins is in line for his first All-Pro campaign. But what's the biggest reason for optimism? What's the top sign to think the Texans are set for a surge this fall as a legit threat in the AFC and not just a divisional favorite? Pro Football Focus' Dalton Wasserman recently examined every NFL team's biggest reason for optimism heading into the 2025 season. For Texans, it remains Ryans' defense, but more importantly, the impactful names at premier positions. Defensive end Will Anderson Jr. is set up for a breakout season. Cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. is coming off an All-Pro year. Meanwhile, names like defensive end Danielle Hunter, cornerback Kamari Lassiter and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair are all prominent names who could be top-half at their respective positions. "Led by superstar cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. and the dynamic pass-rush duo of Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr., the Texans' pass defense is one of the best units in the NFL," Wasserman wrote. "The unit also added safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson in a trade with Philadelphia after he posted a career-best 85.7 PFF coverage grade for the Super Bowl champions last season. Opponents are going to have a difficult time succeeding against Houston in obvious passing situations." Houston's secondary might eventually become the league's most feared unit with the arrival of Gardner-Johnson. In his two seasons with the Eagles, the do-it-all defensive back ranked top five in interceptions and top 10 in pass deflections. He was also a no-nonsense tackler, often catching himself on the highlight reel for his massive hits. While Gardner-Johnson is the newcomer, Houston's returning talent could be what sets itself over the top. Jalen Pitre, who inked a three-year extension this offseason, looked more comfortable in the nickel position last year and regained his confidence. While there were several mishaps during his rookie season, Calen Bullock improved as a tackler and finished with five interceptions as the running mate for Eric Murray. Since arriving in 2023, the Texans' identity under Ryans has been defense-first. After two promising seasons that ended with 10 wins and a division title, Houston has put the pieces in place to make a splash as a legit threat to compete with Kansas City should the offensive line hold.

(AP Photo/Adam Hunger, file) LONDON (AP) — New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is finally set to get his hands on an English soccer team. Premier League side Crystal Palace announced on Monday that Johnson has signed 'a legally binding contract' to buy the shares of fellow American John Textor, who has a 43% stake in the London club. Advertisement Reports have placed the price between $220 million and $260 million. 'Whilst the completion is pending approval from the Premier League and Women's Super League, we do not envisage any issues and look forward to welcoming Woody as a partner and director of the club,' Palace said in a statement. 'We would like to go on record to thank John Textor for his contribution over the past four years and wish him every success for the future.' Johnson submitted a bid to buy Chelsea in 2022 but was unsuccessful. The sale of Textor's shares boosts Palace's hopes of playing in the Europa League next season, having qualified thanks to its FA Cup final victory over Manchester City last month. Advertisement Textor is also a shareholder in French side Lyon, which is set to enter the same competition, and under UEFA multi-club ownership rules, it looked as if Palace could miss out. ___ AP soccer:

This 76-yard TD by Sam Mills is the Saints Play of the Day

Mills once stripped a fumble from the QB, recovered it, and covered 76 yards on the return Our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' 2025 season opener is on Day 76, which makes this touchdown from Sam Mills our pick for the Saints Play of the Day. It was an impressive play at the time, but it also went down in the team record books as the longest play of Mills' storied NFL career. That isn't normally something you track for linebackers, but watch the play and you'll see why it matters. Mills, the future Pro Football Hall of Famer, stripped the football from New York Jets quarterback Browning Nagle and covered 76 yards on the return to score for New Orleans -- you can see the entire play here. Mills set the tone early in what would be a 20-0 shutout win on the road for the Saints, capping their 1992 season with a 12-4 record. That tied a franchise record for the most wins in the regular season. It's not a surprise that Mills was the player to step up in a moment like this. The "Field Mouse" was known for punching above his weight class (he was listed at just 5-foot-9 and 229 pounds) and making plays other guys only dreamt of; this was the first of three fumbles he returned for a touchdown in his NFL career, and his 18th takeaway in seven years with the Saints. He earned his fourth Pro Bowl nod back in 1992 and was also selected for the All-Pro second team by the Associated Press. Mills went on to become a legend with the startup Carolina Panthers, too, but he earned his place in pro football history with the Saints first.
