Football legends Ossie Ardiles and Micky Hazard have returned to Swindon Town for a night of nostalgia.
The Tottenham Hotspur legends and Swindon Town alumni joined fans at the Nigel Eady County Ground on Wednesday, June 11 for 'An Evening with Micky Hazard and Ossie Ardiles'.

Swindon welcomed the former midfielders to the Legends Lounge to entertain an audience with tales from their impressive playing careers.
Ardiles and Hazard spoke to supporters about their time at White Hart Lane and the County Ground, their time in English football and their experiences on the international stage.
Ardiles managed Swindon from 1989 to 1991, describing the club's 1-0 win over Sunderland in the 1990 Second Division play-off final as one of his all-time favourite achievements.
He also made two appearances for Swindon as a player in a career that also saw him win the 1978 World Cup representing Argentina.

Hazard scored 17 goals for Swindon in 121 appearances and helped guide the club to the Premier League under the management of Glenn Hoddle.

The pair were Spurs team-mates from 1978 to 1985 before Hazard departed for Chelsea, winning the FA Cup and UEFA Cup while at the club.
Their evening at the County Ground is part of a calendar of events that will see a number of legendary figures from the world of football.
Stuart Pearce visited the Legends Lounge to speak with fans earlier this year in March, while Paul Merson will be making a similar appearance at the club on October 29.
The events are part of a club initiative to push for increased commercial revenue that could help guide Swindon back to League One.

The club's Chief Commercial Officer, James Watts, said: "We are doing a selection of events in The Legends Lounge. We want to try and turn it more into a venue, using it for more events and getting promoters involved in that, who we are talking to on a local and national level.
"That goes beyond club events but also guest speakers, race nights, and things like that.
"The concert was the starting point, and on the back of that, we can add things to the commercial portfolio in the lounge, but also the suites upstairs and then with a redevelopment of the stadium, you can look at other things."

The 26-year-old's contract runs out at Liverpool at the end of June and she is yet to agree an extension despite having offers on the table for several months. Advertisement Sources at Liverpool suggested in May they were hopeful Nagano would renew her contract but United's interest could complicate matters. Nagano joined Liverpool in January 2023 and quickly established herself as a regular starter in the team. The midfielder could link-up with fellow Japanese international Hinata Miyazawa if United are successful in their pursuit.

Liverpool signs Germany midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen

Liverpool delivered a huge statement of intent after winning the Premier League title by signing Germany star Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen on Friday. The transfer fee could climb to 116 million pounds ($156 million), which would make the 22-year-old Wirtz the most expensive player in the history of British soccer. Liverpool, determined to not stand still after securing a record-tying 20th English top-flight title, has splashed out a club record to bring in not only one of the best players from Germany, but one of the top youngsters in the world. Wirtz has been a key first-team player for Leverkusen since he was 17. He was the outstanding attacking player in the team that won the Bundesliga and German Cup in 2023-24 without losing a game, and is a regular in Germany's national team. It's why Liverpool was ready to pay a guaranteed 100 million pounds, plus 16 million pounds in potential add-ons. Wirtz had two years left on his contract, giving Leverkusen leverage in negotiations. The Premier League record for an initial fee was set when Chelsea signed Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for 106.7 million pounds ($131.4 million at the time) in 2023, before the London club agreed to pay up to 115 million pounds ($146 million at the time) for midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton later that year. Liverpool manager Arne Slot arrived last summer and signed just one outfield player — forward Federico Chiesa — for the 2024-25 season. Chiesa barely played and the Reds won the league by 10 points, after which Slot and some of his players — including Virgil van Dijk — spoke about there being big plans for this transfer window. Having already signed right wing back Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen for a reported 35 to 40 million euros ($39.7 million to $45.4 million), Liverpool has returned to the German club to take Wirtz, who rejected an opportunity to join Bayern Munich — a Bundesliga rival which has long pursued him. One obstacle to that move was the size of the fee Leverkusen wanted. Another was concern over how Wirtz might fit into the same lineup as Jamal Musiala, Germany's other standout young attacking midfielder. Losing Wirtz leaves Leverkusen and its new coach, Erik ten Hag with an even bigger rebuild following the departure of Xabi Alonso for Real Madrid. Just after his 17th birthday, Wirtz became the youngest player in Leverkusen's history when he made his debut against Werder Bremen in May 2020, in an empty stadium at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. A month later he was the youngest player to score in Bundesliga history, though that record has since been topped. Wirtz's versatile attacking midfield play was a vital ingredient in Alonso transforming Leverkusen into a team that could win the Bundesliga and German Cup without losing a game. He and Alonso stayed for another sometimes-disappointing season which ended with second place to Bayern in the league and a loss to Bayern in the Champions League round of 16. Wirtz showed he can deal with adversity when a cruciate ligament tear in his knee ruled him out for almost all of 2022 — including Alonso's first games as coach — before he returned to power Leverkusen to its league and cup double in 2023-24. Wirtz has become a vital player for the German national team with 29 caps. He played all five of its matches at Euro 2024 on home soil. He's also had to contend with hostility from fans of his boyhood club Cologne, which he left for nearby Leverkusen at 16. Liverpool and Bayern were reportedly interested then, too. Cologne claimed that deal broke an agreement between the clubs not to pursue each other's youth players. Leverkusen argued Wirtz was so talented that he counted as a first-team player despite his age. Cologne and Leverkusen are barely 10 kilometers (6 miles) apart, so going to Liverpool will be the first time that Wirtz has moved away from his roots. His parents Hans Wirtz and Karin Gross have played a big role in his career — they were also his agents until last year — and he's close to his older sister Juliane, a professional player for Werder Bremen in the women's Bundesliga. Wirtz's decision to turn down Bayern and the Bundesliga for Liverpool has caused some raised eyebrows in Germany. 'I wouldn't have thought Florian would make this switch so early,' former Germany great Lothar Matthäus told broadcaster n-tv last month. 'But he wants to get out of his comfort zone.' Wirtz seems likely to slot in as the No. 10 at Liverpool, a more creative solution in that role compared to the hard-running Dominik Szoboszlai. Whether Slot also now pushes for a new striker as an upgrade to current options Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez remains to be seen. ___

Chris Richards Wants His Gold Cup Heroics To Lead the U.S. At '26 World Cup

AUSTIN, Texas – At the final whistle, Chris Richards dropped to the turf on one knee, looked up at the sky, crossed his chest and said a quick prayer. The U.S. men's national team had just beaten Saudi Arabia 1-0 to clinch its second straight Gold Cup victory, and he was relieved. On a hot and sticky evening at Q2 Stadium, when the front line couldn't find the back of the net, it was Richards who stepped up and not only saved a goal in the first half, but scored the winning one in the second. The result means the USMNT will advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament, despite still having one more group stage match against Haiti on Sunday (7 p.m. ET on FOX). Richards, 25, is one of the more experienced players for the USMNT with 27 caps. The 6-foot-1 stalwart defender made 32 appearances across all competitions for Crystal Palace in England this season and helped his club win the FA Cup in May. He would likely have been a starting center back alongside Tim Ream at the 2022 World Cup had a hamstring tear not ruled him out. While not being part of that group in Qatar was tough for Richards, he's grown for both club and country since, and has proven to be a clear and steady leader for an otherwise young squad this summer. "He is the type of player who can be a leader and step up for the team with his performance," U.S. manager Mauricio Pochettino said. "I'm so happy for him because he's a really great guy, and I think this season with Crystal Palace was fantastic for him, and now he's trying to translate all his experience to this team. "But most important is that he's so humble. And that is what I like the most. When he arrives [in camp], he's always very open to learn, to talk." That's because Richards understands the position he's in. Ream, who leads the team with 71 caps and has been wearing the captain's armband, will be 38 years old at the 2026 World Cup. He won't play forever and when that time comes, Richards wants to be ready to assume that role. "Nobody told me that I need to make those types of plays, but I'm my harshest critic and so, for me personally, I want to kind of be the leader for this team," Richards said. "I think there's no secret that Tim is getting a little older and at some point, he has to let go of the reign. So hopefully I can be the guy to step into that spot. I've learned a lot from him over the last few years." Saudi Arabia made things difficult for the USMNT to get shots in the first half – by halftime, the U.S. had only mustered two with one on goal. In the 31st minute, Abdulrahman Al-Obud beat Alex Freeman and found himself alone on the left wing in perfect position to score. He got a quality shot off, and it likely would have gone in if not for Richards tracking back and sliding in for a massive block. "That is what we want and that is what we expect because he has the quality," Pochettino said. "When you create the platform that the players feel confident and feel the power and the energy, we start to play like a team. "In previous games in previous months, maybe it was difficult to find an action like this. But now it's because the spirit of the group forces you to do something heroic. It's what we want to keep [doing] until the World Cup." Pochettino made a few tactical adjustments in the second half, like moving Freeman a bit higher to create more of a three-back back line instead of the usual four, and sliding Sebastian Berhalter deeper. In the 56th minute, Richards was in position to get a close-range header off a Jack McGlynn corner kick, but it went right into goalkeeper Nawaf Al-Aqidi's chest. "The afro kind of stopped it a little bit," Richards said, laughing. "Pros and cons of the afro." Moments later, after Pochettino made his first substitutions of the night to get Tyler Adams and Damion Downs into the game, Richards got another chance. In the 63rd minute, Berhalter's free-kick service was on point and Richards finished it to give the U.S. a 1-0 edge. It was his second international goal for the USMNT. Richards said later that he and Berhalter had been working on set pieces all week. "As soon as I saw it there, I thought, 'This has to be me,'" Richards said. Chris Richards scored off a set piece to give the United State a 1-0 lead over Saudi Arabia. After the goal, Saudi Arabia picked up the pace, desperate to tie it up in order to clinch their spot in the knockout round. But the U.S. showed maturity and held off their opponent for another 25 minutes. While Pochettino and his players acknowledged the overall performance could have been better, it was important to get another win to build belief and confidence within the group. Especially considering how the U.S. entered this tournament – on a four-game skid with drama surrounding the team. "I said it when we were obviously on the losing streak, and it doesn't feel good to all the boys: You just have to continue to trust the process, even when things don't feel perfect," Adams said. "[Pochettino] even said in the locker room after the game, 'Enjoy that feeling, understand what that feeling is like and what you just had to do and put all that emotion out on the field because it doesn't come easy."
