FRIM Enhances Efforts To Commercialise Forest Resource-based Research Innovations

KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 (Bernama) -- The Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) continues to strengthen its role in the development of forest resource-based technology and innovation through the comprehensive execution of research, development, commercialisation, and application (RDCA) activities.
FRIM said the initiative represents a strategic effort by the institute to support Malaysia's aspiration of becoming a high-tech nation by the year 2030.
'In line with the Forestry Research Institute Malaysia Act 2016 and the National Research, Development, Innovation, Commercialisation and Economic (RDICE) Roadmap, FRIM plays a key role within the national innovation ecosystem by fostering collaboration between the research sector, industry, and government.
'This effort is guided by the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (NSTIP) 2021-2030, which aims to achieve research and innovation investments totaling RM85.7 billion,' FRIM said in a statement.
It added that it plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between research laboratories and the market by actively participating in national initiatives such as Malaysia Commercialisation Year and working closely with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).
According to FRIM, several approaches have been implemented to drive innovation, including the provision of technology packages, product certification, technical advisory services, and incubation activities through its Innovation and Commercialisation Division.
'FRIM's intellectual property is managed through the Technology Information Management System (TIMS), ensuring that innovation outputs are well-protected and ready for commercialisation. These efforts are further supported by its wholly owned subsidiary, FRIM Incorporated Sdn Bhd, which plays a pivotal role in facilitating technology licensing and translating research outcomes to meet market demands,' it said.
'Among FRIM's key achievements is the successful commercialisation of clones and extracts from local herbs such as Kacip Fatimah (Labisia pumila) and Cucur Atap (Baeckea frutescens) which are now incorporated into natural wellness products with strong potential to enter international markets.
The institute also provides consultancy and technology transfer services to both government agencies and the private sector. These services encompass a wide range of areas, including biomass product development, plantation silviculture, eco-friendly product certification, and biodiversity mapping.

PASIR SALAK, June 20 (Bernama) -- The Sejahtera Komuniti MADANI (SejaTi MADANI) programme has proven effective in strengthening the local economy, particularly for the urban poor and communities in rural and remote areas. Perak Menteri Besar's special officer for the Kampung Gajah state constituency, Khairul Azwan Harun, said that with a government grant of RM100,000 under the SejaTi MADANI initiative, the community of Kampung Makmur near Kampung Gajah here has achieved notable success through the production of value-added products derived from catfish farming in canvas ponds. "The Kampung Makmur community now has three main downstream products, namely catfish balls, cakes, and butter garlic herb fillets, all produced entirely by participants of the SejaTi MADANI programme. "This project not only generates income from fish farming but also imparts new knowledge and helps increase the income of local residents through the creation of downstream products," he told Bernama after launching the products under the SejaTi MADANI programme by the Kampung Makmur Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) at Pasir Salak Community College here today. He also reminded recipients of SejaTi MADANI funds to ensure that the allocations bring positive impact to the local community. "Participants must realise that the SejaTi MADANI programme, initiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is meant to help the community grow their economy," he said. Meanwhile, Kampung Makmur JPKK chairman Muhammad Fauzi Ahmad Shaharudin said the launch of the downstream products marked the continuation of the catfish farming project undertaken by the community in September last year. "Following the success of our catfish farming, we began a new chapter by developing downstream products, and a total of 17 JPKK members took part in an intensive training series at Pasir Salak Community College from May 21 to June 12," he said. He added that in addition to processing techniques, participants also received training in packaging, labelling, digital marketing, and accounting to ensure they not only produce quality goods but are also capable of managing and promoting their business effectively.

Malaysia To Host GSMA M360 ASEAN From 2026 To 2028

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will host the GSMA M360 ASEAN event series from 2026 to 2028 under a multi-year strategic partnership signed between the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). The agreement, signed yesterday at the Mobile World Congress (MWC25) in Shanghai, names Malaysia as the official host nation for the M360 ASEAN series, with the inaugural edition to be held in Kuala Lumpur in September 2026. The collaboration marks a major step in positioning Malaysia as a regional hub for digital policy dialogue, industry innovation, and cross-border cooperation in Southeast Asia. His lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, confirmed the development on Friday, stating Najib is relieved to have fewer cases weighing on him, particularly after multiple previous requests for a DNAA. The High Court here today granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak over three money laundering charges involving RM27 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd. - Bernama file photo With this, he said Najib can now concentrate fully on the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case. The High Court allowed the DNAA application filed on June 11. The decision followed Najib's failed bid to have the charges dropped after the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) rejected his representation on July 31, 2023. Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul had initially requested the court to set a new date for trial. However, Shafee again pressed for a DNAA, pointing out that the case had been ongoing since 2019 with over six years of delays. When asked about the possibility of an appeal, Shafee clarified that the deputy public prosecutor cannot challenge the decision, as the prosecution retains the option to pursue the case again once they are prepared. 'Of course, we hope they do not, because this case has already prejudiced against Najib. So I hope the Attorney General will use his discretion and authority to close the case,' he said. Najib was charged on Feb 3, 2019, with receiving RM27 million from illegal proceeds through his three AmPrivate Banking accounts at AmIslamic Bank, Jalan Raja Chulan, on July 8, 2014. The charges were brought under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, which carries a maximum of five years in prison, a RM5 million fine, or both, upon conviction. Despite this discharge, Najib continues to serve his sentence at Kajang Prison for misappropriating RM42 million from the same SRC International fund. He began serving his sentence on Aug 23, 2022. He was initially sentenced to 12 years in prison and a RM210 million fine, which were upheld by the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court. However, a royal pardon petition filed on Sept 2, 2022, led to the Pardons Board reducing his sentence to six years and the fine to RM50 million.
