Implement new parking rules by Sunday: RMC to parking lot contractors

Time of India7 days ago

Ranchi: The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) directed the parking lot contractors to comply with the newly issued operational norms for all authorised parking sites by Sunday.
The 48-hour window, which began on Friday, requires agencies to prominently install signage displaying fixed tariffs, agency contact details, and clearly defined parking boundaries.
The move aims to curb overcharging and illegal occupation of public spaces.
The civic body also urged citizens to report violations on mobile phone number, 8141231235, or toll-free number, 1800-570-1235. Field inspections and enforcement drives would begin from Monday, officials said.
Each of the 31 authorised parking sites must display charges of Rs 10 for two-wheelers and Rs 30 for four-wheelers for a three-hour window. A 10-minute free parking period is mandatory. Agencies must also provide printed parking slips and ensure their staff wear uniforms and visible ID cards.
RMC commissioner Sanjay Kumar said, "We are focused on creating a system where citizens are not harassed or overcharged. This deadline is firm, and action will be taken against any agency that fails to comply."
However, citizens said that 31 parking lots are inadequate for a city with 53 municipal wards and a growing number of vehicles. "We require at least double the number of regulated parking spots, especially in high-density zones like Main Road, Lalpur, and Kutchery," said Neetu Mandal, a commuter at the Nucleus Mall parking space.
Some also suggested exploring multi-level parking and converting under-utilised spaces near commercial hubs into parking bays.

Digital road safety campaign: 'Parvaah' garners 10 million engagements in UP; Rampur bags 1st place

MEERUT: In a departure from traditional road safety initiatives that often rely on fines and enforcement drives, Bareilly division recently launched a digital campaign 'Parvaah' (care), a month-long initiative from April 19 that used social media to promote adherence to traffic rules and responsible driving, racking up 10 million engagements across platforms. The campaign's success is particularly significant given UP's grim road safety record. According to the UP Road Safety and Awareness Cell, the state recorded 13,000 road accidents resulting in 7,700 fatalities between Jan and May 20. "Road safety isn't about instilling fear through hefty challans, it's about care and responsibility," said Ramit Sharma, additional director general (ADG) of police, Bareilly zone and the driving force behind Parvaah. An electrical engineer from IIT-Kanpur, he added, "In this digital age, engaging commuters as active participants is essential. Awareness is key and digital is the way forward." The campaign was driven by 11 dedicated teams, comprising district and traffic police from nine districts: Bareilly, Pilibhit, Badaun, Rampur, Moradabad, Bijnor, Amroha, Sambhal and Shahjahanpur. They flooded social media with over 5,700 posts, 2,618 awareness templates, more than 1,100 videos, and 200 news clippings, each crafted to reinforce the core message: traffic rules save lives. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Bareilly police secured the second position, while the Bareilly traffic police team came in third. Sharing Rampur's strategy, SP Vidya Sagar Mishra said, "We mobilised digital volunteers, educational institutions, and the district administration to amplify the campaign's impact across social media platforms,We also made sure our traffic police hit the ground to create real-time awareness." Road cave-in creates 6ft deep crater in Aliganj

1 2 3 Lucknow: A major accident was averted on Saturday after a large crater suddenly formed in the middle of the road in Aliganj's Sector J, just moments after a city bus carrying over three dozen passengers passed. The crater was about 8 ft in radius and 6 ft deep—large enough to engulf a small car. According to officials, the collapse was caused by a damaged underground sewage pipeline located nearly 12 ft below the surface, which led to soil erosion. The road, a busy connector between Purania and Ram Ram Bank Chauraha, is used by over 15,000 commuters daily and falls under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department (PWD). "A pit about 6 ft deep was formed due to soil erosion, likely caused by leakage in a 600 mm diameter sewer line. The incident occurred around 5:30 pm, and we estimate that repair work will take five to seven days," said a Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) official. Locals, who placed bricks and tree branches to mark the area and prevent accidents, expressed concern over the recurring nature of such incidents. "This is the second cave-in in the area in the last three years," said Manoj Singh, a local. Kundan Singh, a nearby shopkeeper, recalled the moment of collapse: "It felt like an earthquake or explosion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Locals are demanding long-term solutions and stricter monitoring of underground pipelines to prevent further damage. "Repair work on the damaged sewer line is currently in progress and being carried out on priority to prevent any further inconvenience to the public," said additional municipal commissioner Lalit Kumar. "Our teams are working round-the-clock to complete the restoration of the underground pipeline, which was likely damaged due to erosion caused by leakage. Once this underground repair is completed and the site is secured, we will formally inform the PWD to begin mending and resurfacing the road. Ensuring public safety and restoring normal traffic movement is our priority," he said. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Choked: Barely 1% Space To Park Over 21L Vehicles

1 2 Nagpur: With the number of vehicles on Nagpur's roads crossing 21 lakh, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) decided to decongest roads by earmarking over 83,750 square metres of space for organised street parking. This includes newly marked slots for 13,500 two-wheelers and 4,000 four-wheelers spread across 51 prime stretches on 75 surveyed roads. Under the initiative, white lines—diagonal for wide roads and parallel for narrow lanes—were painted to create uniform parking bays. Each two-wheeler slot measures 1x2.5m (2.5sqm), and each four-wheeler slot 5x2.5m (12.5sqm). These changes, implemented under the guidance of municipal commissioner and administrator Abhijeet Chaudhari, are already drawing a positive response from vehicle users, especially in commercial zones that lack formal parking lots. However, the current provision is a fraction of the actual need. With an estimated 12 lakh two-wheelers and 6 lakh four-wheelers, the city would require more than 10.5 million sqm—or 1,050 hectares—of parking space if all vehicles were to be accommodated at once. That includes 300ha for two-wheelers and 750ha for four-wheelers. In comparison, the 83,750 sqm now available covers just 0.8% of that demand. Adding to the pressure is the steady migration of people from surrounding districts and states to Nagpur, which expanded the floating and resident vehicle base beyond just the registered count. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Still, NMC officials view this as a critical first step. "This initiative is expected to reduce traffic congestion caused by haphazard parking. It will also help citizens develop the habit of parking only at designated spots, freeing up space on the roads and making footpaths safer and more accessible for pedestrians," said Executive Engineer Ravindra Bundhade. He also urged citizens to cooperate: "We appeal to people to use the designated parking slots properly and follow traffic rules to support the city's development." The designated spaces cover high-traffic corridors such as Mate Chowk to Pratap Nagar, Medical Square to Krida Chowk, Jaripatka to Itwari, Ravi Nagar to Ramnagar, and over 47 more locations. Experts believe the city now needs to scale up further with multi-level parking structures, underground lots, and tighter integration with public transport to truly address the growing urban parking crisis.
