Digital road safety campaign: 'Parvaah' garners 10 million engagements in UP; Rampur bags 1st place
MEERUT: In a departure from traditional road safety initiatives that often rely on fines and enforcement drives, Bareilly division recently launched a digital campaign 'Parvaah' (care), a month-long initiative from April 19 that used social media to promote adherence to traffic rules and responsible driving, racking up 10 million engagements across platforms.
The campaign's success is particularly significant given UP's grim road safety record. According to the UP Road Safety and Awareness Cell, the state recorded 13,000 road accidents resulting in 7,700 fatalities between Jan and May 20.
"Road safety isn't about instilling fear through hefty challans, it's about care and responsibility," said Ramit Sharma, additional director general (ADG) of police, Bareilly zone and the driving force behind Parvaah.
An electrical engineer from IIT-Kanpur, he added, "In this digital age, engaging commuters as active participants is essential. Awareness is key and digital is the way forward."
The campaign was driven by 11 dedicated teams, comprising district and traffic police from nine districts: Bareilly, Pilibhit, Badaun, Rampur, Moradabad, Bijnor, Amroha, Sambhal and Shahjahanpur. They flooded social media with over 5,700 posts, 2,618 awareness templates, more than 1,100 videos, and 200 news clippings, each crafted to reinforce the core message: traffic rules save lives.

CURSE OF CONCRETE
wo-wheelers & autorickshaws seem destined for an unpleasant ride on city roads for at least 15 years, because that's how long the rough & bumpy concrete roads are expected to last Times News Network About 70% of the vehicles on Bengaluru's roads are two-wheelers. Yet, the decision about concreting – or white-topping – city roads seems to have been taken by those who only use four-wheelers. The white-topped roads are an unpleasant experience for two-wheelers, and more so for autorickshaws, which don't have the kind of suspensions four-wheelers have. And it seems to be getting worse on newer concrete roads like the one being laid between Lingarajapuram and Outer Ring Road (Kacharakanahalli main road), and Residency Road. It's a really rough ride. That's partly in the nature of concrete. They are rigid, not as flexible as asphalt. Ashish Verma, professor of transportation systems engineering at IISc, says if there are no potholes, black-top (asphalt) roads consist of elastic properties which make them smoother and comparatively comfortable to ride on. 'Lack of the same on cement roads leads to a bumpy riding experience,' he says. There are ways to make concrete roads smoother. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Laxmi Ji Idol For Wealth, Peace & Happiness Luxeartisanship Shop Now Undo But that also makes them more slippery than asphalt. Verma thinks the roughness of the white-top roads is part of the design to make them less slippery. BBMP too acknowledges that asphalt gives a better riding experience than concrete. An official notes that it is possible to make the concrete roads smoother than they are currently. But he says that requires the entire road to be handed over to them and to be rebuilt as a full concrete road. BBMP can then use 7m wide sensor pavers – specialised machines that use sensors to automatically adjust the paver's height, slope, and grade, resulting in consistent thickness and a level finish. Unfortunately, he says, traffic police are unwilling to hand over an entire road, given the inevitable congestion it would create elsewhere. So, you find contractors doing small stretches of one side of a road at a time. This way of doing it also typically involves use of large slabs of concrete, and the joints between these slabs often create uneven surfaces. Two-wheeler experience Alec Jonathan D'Souza, a 24-year-old PG student who rides on the outer ring road, describes his experience as 'painful'. 'The roads are not levelled and are uncomfortable to ride on,' he says. Thanish Jayanth M, 21, a BTech student at Presidency University, often rides around Hebbal and parts of Outer Ring Road, where a lot of stretches are white-topped. He describes how one can feel every tiny crack or uneven joint. 'The constant vibration just tires you out more than usual,' he says. Manoj Shetty, 32, is part of the Travel Stories biking community. He says he's less confident riding on white-topped roads, especially during the monsoon, as they tend to be more slippery. Dileep Kumar, 26, an employee at Medi Assist, says once while riding on a white-topped road during rain, his bike skidded badly, but he managed to take control of the bike. 'The joints between concrete slabs were uneven, which caused a sudden jerk,' he says, adding that these roads put a lot of strain on his bike's suspension and tyres. That, indeed, is another problem. Concrete roads – because of higher friction and rigid nature – tend to be harder on tyres than asphalt roads, potentially leading to more wear and tear and an increased risk of overheating, especially at high speeds. Autorickshaw experience Autorickshaw drivers face similar, and even additional issues. Krishna A M, a 49-year-old auto driver, says that these roads can be quite bumpy, which can be quite discomforting for elderly passengers who request him to drive slowly. Salman Khan, 26, who drives through the Thanisandra Road often, says that bumpy roads mean driving slowly, which leads to more traffic congestion. Avinaash J, 28, adds, 'The rough, bumpy surface can sometimes cause a steering problem, making it harder to control. Good asphalt roads without potholes provide a better driving experience.' Digging up concrete roads The expensive concrete roads are expected to last at least 15 years. If city authorities remain adamant about white-topping most roads, two-wheelers and autorickshaws will be condemned to unpleasant drives for a very long time. BBMP had also argued that they would never have to dig up these concrete roads, and hence there would be no potholes. But even that's turning out to be an illusion. The white-topped Thanisandra Road has been dug up in multiple locations, and those locations have either not been filled up, or been filled up shoddily. Manoj Shetty, who resides at Chandapura near Electronics City, says a concrete road laid out near his home had to be dug up just after a month for a waterline installation. Looks like TenderSure design principles have not been followed in the case of several concrete roads. Verma says if properly laid, asphalt roads can last for at least five years. 'We require a proper design for its capacity to slip water on the side to avoid breaking. With proper workmanship and design, asphalt can provide a smoother, durable and a comfortable ride for all,' he says. Voice Box These roads affect middle/lower income citizens disproportionately because they're the primary users of autorickshaws and scooters as a means of commuting. Dileep Kumar, 26, EMPLOYEE, MEDI ASSIST Rough surface means your tyres wear out sooner than they do on asphalt roads, hence you should be careful not to ride too fast on these cement roads. Regin T C, 38, RESIDENT, KALYAN NAGAR I have to lower and maintain a certain speed on this road to ride safely. Thanish Jayanth M, 21, BTECH STUDENT, PRESIDENCY UNIVERSITY The Ulsoor lake concrete road is known for its accidents, which also caused the officials to put up a signboard with a speed limit. The uneven surface on concrete roads makes it harder to steer the scooter handle properly. We can do smoother concrete roads, but that requires 7m wide sensor pavers. But within the city, we don't get the permit required from the traffic police to use such big machines. Another 'Mayday' episode causes more jitters in Indian aviation
A Guwahati-to-Chennai IndiGo flight carrying 168 passengers had to make an emergency landing at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru on Thursday night, news agencies reported on June 21 citing sources. The forced landing came after the captain issued a 'Mayday' distress signal, citing critically low fuel levels, the sources reportedly informed. The details of the incident remain unclear as the airline has reportedly not given any confirmation on the same yet. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo According to a Times of India report, IndiGo's flight 6E-6764, operated by an Airbus A321 that departed Guwahati at 4:40 p.m., tried to land in Chennai at approximately 7:45 p.m. However, after the aircraft's landing gear made contact with the runway, the pilot initiated a maneuver known as a 'balked landing' or go-around. A source with direct knowledge of the situation told ToI that the Mayday call was transmitted when the aircraft was roughly 35 nautical miles away from Bengaluru. Live Events According to the source, the approach to Chennai seemed improperly stabilised. The sharp and abrupt ascent after the aborted landing startled many on board; several passengers appeared fearful, one traveler who preferred to remain unnamed told the newspaper. Staff at airport operations and air traffic control (ATC) verified that no further attempt was made to land in Chennai. Instead, the pilot diverted the aircraft toward Bengaluru. KIA officials stated that the distress signal prompted immediate action by the ATC, who coordinated with ground services. Firefighters and medical teams were readied in anticipation of the aircraft's arrival. The plane touched down safely at Bengaluru at 8:20 p.m. One insider mentioned that both pilots were subsequently removed from active duty, though IndiGo declined to officially comment on the matter. The airline attributed the diversion to air traffic congestion at Chennai Airport — a reason that ATC officials in Chennai reportedly rubbished. Sources suggested the aircraft may not have been carrying the required minimum amount of diversion fuel after the go-around, ToI's report said. IndiGo neither confirmed nor denied that a Mayday transmission had been made by the flight crew. Once on the ground in Bengaluru, the passengers were informed that the plane would proceed to Chennai post-refueling. A fresh crew was assigned to operate the subsequent leg, which arrived in Chennai at 11:25 p.m. Air operations in India are currently in the eye of a storm following the deadly Ahmedabad Air India crash , with all kinds of aviation-related matters being followed closely.

Cancer, Weekly Horoscope, June 22 to June 28: Practical Finances, Family Balance, and Unexpected Support
Cancer natives should focus on balancing resources and avoiding overexertion early in the week. Midweek brings opportunities for investments and social engagement, enhancing persuasiveness. The week concludes with fulfillment in studies and career, potential romantic proposals, and favorable conditions for long-term financial investments, fostering harmony within the household. Cancer natives, the week begins with a focus on balancing resources, handling both income and expenditure with a practical mindset. Early in the week, there's a call for moderation—long journeys or major purchases should be postponed, and it's best to avoid overextending yourself. Domestic and family life may come with subtle undercurrents, but you'll find support from classmates or younger acquaintances if you're pursuing education or professional development. Midweek energy brings auspicious windows for investments and social engagement. Your speech becomes charming and persuasive, attracting positive attention from peers and even strangers. Be prepared for guests or unexpected social calls at home; your hospitality and openness could lead to new alliances or friendships. Still, a gentle warning: don't push your limits or ignore your health, as exertion may sap your energy. By the end of the week, the mood lifts dramatically. Fulfillment dominates: students and professionals shine in their pursuits, superiors and colleagues recognize your efforts, and if you're unmarried, romantic proposals may come from the social or familial circle. The week closes with a blend of harmony, fresh respect, and opportunities to invest for the long term, all while the household finds its center. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Tabletă Puternică la Preț Incredibil - Oferta Limitată! LUO Cumpără acum Undo Love and Relationship Relationships see a progression from mild tension to deeper connection and joy. At the start, emotional equilibrium may be tested, particularly with a spouse—miscommunications or differences of opinion could cause friction. If you're single, you may feel preoccupied with financial matters or distracted by family responsibilities. As the week progresses, you become more magnetic, and your interactions, particularly with the opposite sex, are marked by kindness and eloquence. Love deepens for those in established partnerships, and single Cancers might encounter romantic prospects during family events or community gatherings. Toward the weekend, harmony blossoms—cooperation and affection thrive, and unmarried natives may be delighted by proposals or confessions from someone in their circle. Education and Career The academic and professional landscape for Cancer is nuanced this week. Early days require caution: don't be swayed by distractions or sudden opportunities. Classmates or colleagues may prove unexpectedly helpful, lending a hand or offering wise advice. If you're considering real estate or career moves, wait until the midweek before making commitments. Midweek, your intellectual prowess peaks. This is an auspicious time for students, educators, or anyone needing to speak persuasively—whether for presentations, interviews, or negotiations. Recognition comes from superiors, and businesspeople see orders increase or gain from speculation and calculated risks. The end of the week solidifies your gains; success is tangible, and you'll close projects or studies with distinction. Money and Finance Financially, Cancer must balance the urge to spend with the necessity of saving. Early in the week, avoid unnecessary expenditures—hold back on large purchases and keep track of outflows to prevent imbalances. However, midweek is ripe for investment, particularly in assets that promise long-term benefits or can support you during leaner periods. Unexpected sources of money may arrive via social connections or family ties, and those involved in speculation or trading could see returns from carefully considered risks. The week's end is the best time to consider fixed deposits or mutual funds, securing your financial position for the future. Health and Well-being Health for Cancer this week requires a steady, conscious approach. Early days could bring mild physical or emotional fatigue, so it's vital not to ignore your body's signals. Overexertion or neglecting rest can set you back, so carve out time for relaxation. As the week moves forward, mental clarity and energy improve—socializing, laughter, and positive feedback will all contribute to your well-being. Remember to eat moderately, hydrate, and get enough sleep, especially if you're attending frequent gatherings or hosting guests. By the end of the week, both mind and body will be refreshed, leaving you ready to embrace the next phase with renewed vigor.
