Sunny Hostin Almost Dumped Her Now-Husband Emmanuel Because He Was Too Short

During the Friday, June 6, "Hot Topics" segment of The View, Hostin and her fellow hosts — Joy Behar, Sara Haines, Ana Navarro and Alyssa Farah Griffin — discussed Leah Remini's recent comments about her friendship with Jennifer Lopez, and whether they themselves could remain friends with someone who criticized their marriage.
When Behar asked Hostin what she would do if her best friend Regina Jansen had told her to "forget about" her now-husband Manny (né Emmanuel) when they first started dating, Hostin responded that her friend "did the opposite, actually."
"I was going to cancel Manny because I thought he was too short," Hostin recalled. "Regina told me he could stand on his medical degree, and he'd be tall enough. She gives good advice."
Hostin went on to say that "there have been times" where Jansen told her, "I don't like this person for you."
"I think when someone loves you and your friend loves you and you can be that honest, I receive that," she said. "I do listen to my friends that I'm close to."
Hostin and her husband, who is an orthopedic surgeon, tied the knot in 1998, two years after meeting at church while they were both living in Maryland.
"He was gorgeous, decked out in a beautifully tailored suit,' Hostin wrote in her 2020 book I Am These Truths: A Memoir of Identity, Justice, and Living Between Worlds.
Determined to meet him, she followed him to a nearby bagel shop after the service and struck up a conversation. The origins of their love story has since become a running joke.
"He would tell folks that we'd met in a bagel shop, but I'd let him and everyone else know that we'd met in church,' she wrote. 'That's where the connection happened. He just hadn't seen me.'

Hostin welcomed her first child with Emmanuel, son Gabriel, in 2002. Four years later, their daughter Paloma was born. Though they met in Maryland, Hostin and Emmanuel raised their family in New York, where they remain.

The good-natured Corenswet found the lighter side of the situation. 'She gained about 40 pounds while she was pregnant and in the same period I gained about 40 pounds gaining weight for Superman,' he recalls. 'I started snoring and had to use her pregnancy pillow.' The actor says he was at his home, on a break from making the 2024 movie Twisters, when he got the call from Superman director James Gunn telling him he had been cast in the lead role. 'It started with, 'Hey David, it's James Gunn.' And I said, 'Can you prove that?' I guess in the moment before when I saw the unknown 310 number, I thought, 'I'm pretty sure this is James telling me whether or not I got the part, but it could be anybody from Los Angeles who has my number and maybe somebody's going to play a prank on me,' " Corenswet says of the phone call that changed his life. 'Anyway, I think he appreciated that and he said, 'That's a good point. I'm calling to offer you the role of Superman.' And I said, 'Well, you're the only person who could do that, so it must be you,'' Corenswet continues. Now he's hoping he did the role justice. 'I feel much more a sense of responsibility than a sense of accomplishment having done the role. I also know that so much in life and especially the life of an actor is up to chance and good luck, and certainly you get what you make of your situation,' he says. 'I just think of it as a great stroke of luck and I better do everything I can to earn the responsibility,' Corenswet continues. Sunny Hostin says she 'almost died' from allergic reaction on 'The View': 'I panicked'
The View's Sunny Hostin got more than she expected after sampling food that former co-host Debbie Matenopoulos brought to the show this week. "You mean when I almost died?" Hostin asked on Friday's show, after co-host Joy Behar prompted her to tell their co-hosts that day, including Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin, and Ana Navarro, what had happened. Hostin then explained that Matenopoulos — who hosted the show when it premiered in 1997 until 1999, when the network chose not to renew her contract — had brought eats from her new cookbook, on Wednesday. "She has this wonderful food, Greek food," Hostin explained. "I have a terrible allergy to walnuts. As I'm eating the food, Alyssa asks, 'Are those walnuts in here?' And she says 'yes.' So I panic immediately." Hostin said that she then wrote a "death note" to Griffin telling her about the allergy. "She responds, 'Oh, no!'" Hostin said. "And I'm looking at [executive producer] Brian [Teta] and he's like, 'Is everything OK?' No, it's not." Fortunately, she said, the on-site medical team swooped in to save the day. "What was great was, our Disney nurses are like superheroes," Hostin said. "Nurse Jan came in with an EpiPen. She was testing me. I had Benadryl. I was scared."Griffin admitted she hadn't been able to read the "death note." But Hostin reassured her. "She was great in the moment," Hostin said. "I panicked." Griffin said the team were glad their costar made it through the ordeal. Haines at least had no idea that Hostin was allergic to one of the ingredients in a salad Matenopoulos brought, she said.
