Virat Kohli waited for only 18 years, Sachin Tendulkar's wait was even longer: Sehwag
Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag compared Virat Kohli's wait to win an IPL trophy with Sachin Tendulkar's long wait for an ODI World Cup title. Kohli's long-standing dream of winning the IPL was recently fulfilled as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) beat Punjab Kings (PBKS) by six runs in the final of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025).As a result, RCB won their maiden title after 18 years and finally ended their long drought. Recently, Sehwag compared Kohli's long wait with Tendulkar and mentioned how the legendary batter waited even longer to achieve his World Cup dream.advertisement'His (Kohli) wait to win the trophy for only 18 years. Sachin Tendulkar waited from 1989 till 2011. So, Kohli's wait for lesser, and still even Sachin never lost hope. He had made up his mind, he would only bow out with a World Cup trophy in his hand,' Sehwag told Cricbuzz.
Sehwag added that Kohli can be 'relieved' and retire without regrets, whenever he decides to make the decision.'It's the same for Virat Kohli. Now, he can be relieved. He can happily stop playing IPL whenever he wants to make that decision. A player plays to win the trophy. Money comes and goes, but winning trophies isn't easy. And even as Kohli's wait ended, he has still made a very strong contribution in their campaign,' added the former opener.advertisementKohli played a pivotal role in RCB's title triumph, being the third-highest run-scorer of the tournament with 657 runs from 15 innings at an average of 54.75 and a strike rate of 144.71 with eight fifties. His highest score of the season came against Punjab Kings as his unbeaten 73* (54) helped his team to chase down 158 in 18.5 overs. On the other hand, Josh Hazlewood finished as the highest wicket taker of the tournament 22 wickets from 12 innings at an average of 17.54 and an economy of 8.77. RCB scripted a complete team effort in their triumphant run as nine different players won the Player of the Match award throughout the season to end their drought.

'A former batter would've...': Sanjay Manjrekar's on-air remark on Virat Kohli's outside-off stump struggles goes viral
The day 1 of the India vs England Test at Headingley brought big milestones for India's young stars, Yashasvi Jaiswal and debutant Test captain Shubman Gill . But even as India put up a strong 359/3 on the board, much of the off-field chatter was triggered by former cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar 's on-air comment that many fans interpreted as a fresh dig at Virat Kohli . While praising Jaiswal and KL Rahul for their shot selection, Manjrekar said on-air, 'So a lot of what you're seeing is being created by these two batters. And my hats off, there's another example of it we know of. A former batter would have gone after that delivery and got himself into trouble, but not these two. And that's why I believe.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo — cricketluvers (@cricketluvers) Social media quickly lit up, interpreting 'a former batter' as a not-so-subtle reference to Kohli, whose well-known struggles with balls outside off-stump have led to multiple dismissals in the slips in recent years. Live Events — loggerheads36 (@loggerheads36) — rwamit (@rwamit) Manjrekar's comment reopened a long-running discussion on Virat Kohli's off-stump issues, a weakness that critics have repeatedly pointed to, particularly during India's tours of England and Australia. Kohli, who retired from Test cricket in May, continues to face scrutiny, even in absence. This isn't the first time Manjrekar has commented on Kohli's technique. "One important reason why Virat's average has slipped to 48 now, is the unfortunate weakness outside off. But more crucially his adamance to not try another way to tackle it," Manjrekar had said. — sanjaymanjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) Manjrekar has also previously called out Kohli for not being able to find a way to tackle that delivery. 'Lots of greats have gone through a rut, but not in the fashion where they've got out to one particular shot and the great has not been able to find a way. There's another quick point I want to make if you see that dismissal and you've got to feel for Virat Kohli. There were occasions when he was trying to leave balls outside the off on this occasion, after many years, you see that he's actually deep inside the batting crease. Now that is a very rare thing for Virat Kohli to do." Friday's remark came just weeks after Kohli retired from Test cricket, closing a 14-year-long career with 9,230 runs, 27 centuries, and a lasting legacy that also drew criticism during its later phase. In his final years, Kohli's tendency to poke at deliveries outside off became a pattern, especially visible during the 2024–25 Australia series. Meanwhile, on the field, India's younger generation delivered. Gill, leading the team for the first time in a Test match, scored a composed 127* and joined an elite list of Indian captains to score a century on Test captaincy debut, including Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli. Jaiswal's 101 and Pant's 65 helped India dominate the opening day.

Global shame! India tops WADA doping list; sports ministry plans stricter actions
Representational image New Delhi: India continues to grapple with a severe doping problem, as highlighted in the latest report from the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada). According to recently released 2023 testing figures, India has again been ranked first worldwide for the highest number of dope offenders. Out of 5606 urine and blood samples collected, 214 adverse analytical findings (AAFs) were reported, putting the country's positivity rate for prohibited substances at 3.8 per cent. This reflects a rise compared to 2022, when 3865 tests yielded an AAF rate of 3.2 percent. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! These developments have led authorities to revive the 'National Anti-Doping Bill 2022' with an aim to stamp out the doping menace. An amended version of the bill is set to be introduced in an upcoming session of Parliament. Sources indicate that the sports ministry, after taking on board Wada's suggestions, is moving forward with crucial changes in the bill. Notably, the plan to create a statutory 'National Board for Anti-Doping in Sports' comprising a chairman and two members has been scrapped due to concerns it would have led to increased govt interference. Following Wada's strong objection, the bill no longer criminalises athlete's involvement with organised doping syndicates, a clause that had previously allowed for imprisonment up to four years or a fine of Rs 10 lakh for offenders. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo Dominant India on Day 1! Jaiswal & Gill Hit Centuries | ENG vs IND 1st Test - Sahil from Leeds The original bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Dec 17, 2021 by then sports minister Anurag Thakur , and was passed on July 27, 2022 with amendments suggested by the Parliamentary Standing Committee and other stakeholders. It went to the Rajya Sabha on July 28, 2022 and was passed on Aug 3, 2022. Now, under the guidance of sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya , a revised version is ready for fresh introduction. Ministry officials said, 'The bill is ready and will be brought back to the Parliament after a restructuring. Objections raised by Wada have been addressed and required changes made. If these were not incorporated, Wada could have suspended Nada due to govt interference.' According to the 2023 Wada data, athletics continued to shame the country's anti-doping efforts, accounting for 61 AAFs from 1223 tested samples, including 567 in-competition and 539 out-of-competition urine samples, plus 117 blood samples. One AAF emerged from a blood sample. Weightlifting produced 38 AAFs from 451 samples, with powerlifting and wrestling contributing 28 and 10 AAFs, respectively. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? India's positivity rate exceeded those of China (28,197 samples; 0.2%), USA (6,798 samples; 1%), France (11,368; 0.9%), Germany (15,153; 0.4%), and Russia (10,395; 1%). Aside from India's 214 AAFs, other countries logged 105 (France), 99 (Russia), 66 (USA), 60 (China), and 57 (Germany) dope cases. Of the 204,809 tests conducted globally in 2023, 1,820 were positive for banned substances, with India accounting for over 11% of these – an unwanted record. IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill's team shows it is ready to move on from Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma
India's captain Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant (AP Photo/Scott Heppell) How will India cope without Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ? That was the overriding point of discussion in the entire build-up to the England Test series. The general consensus was that the Indian batting lineup lacked the experience to deal with English conditions, and that it would be entirely up to Jasprit Bumrah to keep Shubman Gill's team alive in the Test series. That may well happen even now, but what we saw on Friday on the first day of the first Test at Headingley was that things are probably far brighter than we thought it was. If we look back to the last two Test series against New Zealand at home and Australia away — which India lost 0-3 and 1-3 respectively — to subsequently miss out on a WTC final spot, we will see that the weak links in the batting lineup were Kohli and Rohit. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Against Australia, Kohli aggregated 190 in nine innings (including a 100 in the first Test). He managed 93 from six innings against New Zealand. Rohit's Australia aggregate was 31 off five innings, while against the Kiwis he scored 91 off six innings. With the No. 1 and No. 4 in such wretched form for such a long time, it meant that the onus was on the rest of the batters to deliver, and they often seemed to be buckling under all that pressure. Dominant India on Day 1! Jaiswal & Gill Hit Centuries | ENG vs IND 1st Test - Sahil from Leeds On Friday, it seemed India were suddenly free of the 'baggage', something captain Gill had hinted on Thursday on the eve of the Test match. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo The opening partnership of KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal showed the discipline that we haven't seen in recent times with Rohit around. The Mumbai right hander, towards the back-end of his Test career, had completely lost the trust in his defence and was always looking to hit out of trouble, which often proved counter-productive. That was precisely the thing that Jaiswal and Rahul didn't do on Friday, as they put on 91 runs for the first wicket. The duo was ready to wait and chose the right balls to hit, something that the Indian team sorely missed at the top of the order for a while. While Jaiswal and Rahul left enough evidence that we wouldn't be missing Rohit too much in this format, Gill at No. 4 showed that he was capable of picking up from where Kohli left off. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? Just as Kohli, 12 years ago, took over from Sachin Tendulkar in South Africa and did not allow India to feel the Little Master's absence, it was Gill's turn to bring that sense of assurance that the Indian middle-order has been so sorely lacking of late. Gill didn't try to be the compulsive front-foot player that made things slightly difficult for Virat towards the back end of his Test career. The new captain was ready to play late — a crucial old-school method of being successful in England — a rule book that had been discarded by Kohli after his struggles against James Anderson back in 2014. The entire story, though, hasn't been written yet. It's a long series and there will be ups and downs on the way. The onus is on Gill and his band of young warriors to prove that they are ready to take the battle forward for a new Indian team. Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story.
