Citizens believe that when the jobs in the country are scarce employers should prioritize hiring locals over immigrants
The sixth edition of the Ipsos Populism Report, a 31-country survey which tracks how people around the world feel about issues leading to the rise of populism, shows that India has made remarkable strides in some of the key aspects of populism in sync with the expectations of the citizens.
The Ipsos report shows 59% Indians agreeing in 2025, as opposed to 73% in 2023 and 65% in 2016 – displaying positive strides and improvement in the broken index and how we are doing as a country. The index comprises five statements – the country's economy is rigged to advantage the rich and powerful, traditional parties and politicians do not care about people like me, to fix we need a strong leader to break the rules, country needs a strong leader to take the country back from the rich and powerful and experts in the country do not understand the lives of people like me.
Interestingly, in 2025, 59% Indians agree that the country needs a strong leader willing to break the rules which is a 14% decline from 2023, showing the leader has fulfilled on these attributes leading to the expectations declining. Likewise for the statement that the country needs a strong leader to take the country back from the rich and the powerful, India has 60% agreeing in 2025 showing a decline of 11% from 2023, indicating improvement and the expectation reducing. Similarly, for many areas – like, experts in the country do not understand the lives of people like me, showed a 14% decline from 2023 to 2025 with 59% agreeing.
'India has shown improvement in some of the key areas of populism, with expectations emerging less glaring as opposed to some of the previous years, when more number of citizens emphasized on the system being broken, and there being lack of meritocracy and level playing field and system was meant to favor the rich and powerful and the citizens being vehement in their demand of the country needing a strong leader at the helm. The incumbent leader has shown strong leadership traits, decision making and tough talking, with the expectation now receding on some of these key aspects, indicating improvement in areas which were strongly expressed by the citizens," said Amit Adarkar, CEO, Ipsos India.
One metric where India has shown stark result is in the case of whether the country today is in decline. 1 in 2 Indians (53%) tend to agree showing a +31% increase from 2016. Probably it is to do with people's disappointment with the society and the erosion of the value system.
A strong case for National Identity
The survey shows a strong support for different elements of national identity. At least 73% Indians believe that defending the country when it is criticized is extremely important as citizens. Getting ahead on one's own efforts is endorsed by at least 7 in 10 (73%) respondents. Citizens also strong believe that the right to vote (75%), to be able to speak (71%), to be born in your own country (72%), being part of a religious majority (69%) and treating people of all backgrounds equally (73%) are all important elements of the national identity.
Where should government prioritise spends?
Citizens believe that the government should increase its spending in the key areas of creating jobs (73%); education (72%) – schools, universities and job training; public safety (72%) – law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services; defence and national security (72%) – military; healthcare (71%) – disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment and research; infrastructure (70%) – comprising roads and bridges, rail and air networks, water, electricity and broadband; and reducing poverty and social inequality (64%).
Immigrants & elites – both viewed in poor light
Further, citizens believe that when the jobs in the country are scarce employers should prioritize hiring locals over immigrants. 62% citizens hold this view in 2025, with the public angst receding by -15% from 2023. With government policies becoming more stern discouraging influx of immigrants, public outcry has reduced on immigrants taking away jobs from real people – 60% citizens agree in 2025, showing a -15% reduction from 2023.
Elites are perceived to be a closely connected group of people with similar interests and views on many important issues by 52% of the Indian citizens polled. While 48% Indians perceive elites to be a loose group of people with different interests and views on many important issues. Also 44% Indians believe that elites sincerely think of their decisions being in the larger interest of the people but that would not be the case. 1 in 5 Indians (21%) also feel that the elites take decisions to suit their own interests and people in the country do not matter to them.
The survey
Ipsos interviewed 23,228 people online between Friday, February 21, and Friday, March 7, 2025 in 31 countries. Quotas were set to ensure representativeness and data have been weighted to the known population profile of each country. The sample consists of approximately 1,000 individuals each in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, and the U.S., and 500 individuals each in Argentina, Belgium, Chile, Colombia, Hungary, Indonesia, Ireland, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, and Türkiye. The sample in India consists of approximately 2,200 individuals, of whom approximately 1,800 were interviewed face-to-face and 400 were interviewed online.

In June, North East India witnessed two related deaths: Raja Raghuvanshi from Indore was murdered in Meghalaya and Roshmita Hojai, a woman from Assam's Dimasa tribe, drowned in Rishikesh in Uttarakhand. The North East link was common to both incidents but most media outlets in peninsular India had widely contrasting reactions. Racist stereotypes emerged first. A national daily declared Meghalaya as a region of ' crime-prone ' hills with no mention of how many murders or other crimes had been committed in an area where tourism is central to the local economy. One crime was all it took for mainstream and social media to condemn Meghalaya's residents as 'criminals', without bothering to mention that the villagers around Sohra, where Raghuvanshi was murdered by the wife he had recently married and her accomplices, held a candlelight vigil to mourn the killing of a complete stranger. Disgusting and slanderous.. — patricia mukhim (@meipat) May 29, 2025 On the other hand, newspapers devoted a two-inch column to Hojai, who was aspiring to be a civil servant, and added that two men accompanying her were detained for questioning. There was a complete absence of journalism on how the life of a young woman was nipped in the bud. These contrasting reactions are not exceptions. Stereotypes abound in peninsular India about the people of the North East as 'terrorists', 'secessionists' and immoral women. Every few months, there are reports of women from the northeastern states were molested in Delhi. After one attack, a message was circulated in one of the universities that the women were assaulted because they do not dress like Indians. In December 2021, when security forces gunned down six young men returning home from daily wage work in Mon in Nagaland, social media groups were filled with messages that the men were secessionists who deserved to die. For over six decades, much of the North East has been under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, which gives extraordinary powers to the security forces. It grants the forces the impunity to gun down innocent people, as they did in Nagaland, if they claim to have done it in good faith on the line of duty. I have heard a few who call themselves human rights activists and oppose the murder of civilians in the rest of India saying that the stringent law is needed in the North East because of secessionism. This assertion is rarely backed by an effort to find out how many 'secessionists' there are or why there are conflicts in the region. The 'conflict zone' itself is an exaggerated stereotype. The more than 45 million people of the North East live with the disadvantage of distance with peninsular India, which they call the 'mainland' because of its insular view of their region. This distance and relative isolation are physical as well as psychological and political. For the British colonial regime, the North East was used as an isolated buffer zone between the rest of India and China and Burma. That isolation has continued after Independence. Decades after three wars were fought in the region in the 1960s – against China in 1962, Pakistan in 1965 and following the creation of Bangladesh in 1971 – the North East continues to be a buffer zone for national security. Most North Easterners feel that peninsular India, which views itself as the 'mainstream' centered on the Gangetic Valley Hindu dominant-caste male culture, does not understand them and that 'mainstream' India stops at Kolkata. To most 'mainstream' Indians, the North East is a vague territory between Kolkata and Myanmar about which they know little. One murder case involving both victim and perpetrators from a different state. Case worked out swiftly. And still Meghalaya is continuously trying to bolster confidence about state being a safe tourist destination. — Piyush Rai (@Benarasiyaa) June 18, 2025 During the last decade, this 'distant land of conflicts' has become 'the land of injustice' for the lakhs of immigrants excluded from the National Register of Citizens – like in Assam. But for that the North East rarely enters mainstream Indian thinking. Even the national anthem exalts 'Vindhya, Himachala, Yamuna, Ganga' and ignores the Brahmaputra, which is longer than the Ganga, is the fifth largest river in the world and confers an identity on the North East. But it is not an all-India sacred river. Efforts are being made of late to confer some sacredness on it but by connecting it to the Ganga, not in its own right. Another verse of the national anthem includes 'Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat, Maratha, Dravida, Utkala, Vanga', in other words, an Aryan-Dravidian India in which the people of the North East do not exist. Lakhs of people from the region are forced to go to 'mainland' India because of the high unemployment and poor education infrastructure of the North East. Because of their Mongoloid features, they are often referred to as 'chinki', a pejorative and racist term for the 'enemy' Chinese. Women among them often face sexual harassment because of their looks and their being perceived as open to sexual advances. These stereotypes have had disastrous consequences in times of crisis. In 2020, after the Covid-19 pandemic broke out in China and later spread globally, there were reports of North East people in peninsular India being harassed, evicted from housing or denied entry because of their 'Chinese' features. A group of Naga students was refused entry to a mall in Mysuru, as were two Manipuri students in Hyderabad. A nurse in Bengaluru reported that a child ran away from her screaming 'coronavirus'. Alana Golmei, who hails from Manipur and lives in Delhi, said that on three different occasions when she and a companion from Meghalaya entered the National Council of Educational Research and Training campus, staff taunted them with 'coronavirus'. The pandemic of racism endures even after the real one subsided. For 'mainstream' India, with its insular outlook and geographical distance from the North East, most conflicts in the region appear to 'secessionist'. Instead, it must recognise that the people of the region are searching for an identity of their own, within the Indian nation and not by joining the 'mainstream' that equates national unity with uniformity. They demand unity in diversity that respects their specificity. They want national security to mean the security of their people while belonging to a pluralist India that respects the ethnic specificity, culture, religion, language and worldview in which they find their identity. That is the pluralistic India mandated by the Constitution and it is time that the North East experiences it as well. The two deaths are an opportunity for peninsular India to look at North East India afresh.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi slammed Pakistan's pitch for a Nobel Peace Prize for US President Donald Trump, following America's airstrikes on Iran's key nuclear facilities. Owaisi, the Hyderabad Member of Parliament, also slammed the US and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling him the 'butcher of Palestinians.' The Lok Sabha MP questioned whether Pakistan had supported Trump only to see him drop bombs on a sovereign nation. "We should ask Pakistanis if for this they want Trump to get a Nobel Peace Prize..." Owaisi told news agency ANI in Hyderabad, referring to the strikes carried out by the United States on Iran's nuclear sites in Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow. The government of Pakistan said in a statement on the social media platform X last week that it would nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize as reported by several media outlets in the US, including The Hill. The AIMIM leader further mocked Pakistan's military leadership. "...Did Pakistan's General (Army chief Asim Munir) have lunch with the US president for this? They all have been exposed today," he said on June 22. The US officials said on Sunday that the country's military "obliterated" Iran's main nuclear sites using14 bunker-buster bombs, more than two dozen Tomahawk missiles and over 125 military aircraft. He is doing ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in the West Bank and in Gaza. History will remember him as the butcher of Palestinians." Owaisi also warned of serious consequences for India if a full-scale war breaks out in the region. "We must also remember that more than 16 million Indians live in the Gulf and Middle East, and if that area erupts in a war, which unfortunately is very likely, then it will have a grave impact on the Indians living there," he told ANI. PALAKKAD: A day after sparking controversy by suggesting that the saffron flag should replace the tricolour as India's national flag, BJP leader and former national council member N Sivarajan has clarified that his statement was a personal opinion and that the final decision lies with the Central government. Speaking to TNIE, Sivarajan said, 'The saffron flag has a rich history spanning centuries. It is not merely the flag of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). It symbolises India's culture, heritage and spiritual legacy. From Lord Krishna to Swami Vivekananda and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the saffron flag has long represented Indian identity.' He further noted that requests to make saffron the national flag have been submitted to the Prime Minister's Office multiple times in the past. 'It is now up to the Union government to make an appropriate decision. I believe crores of Indians share the same sentiment,' said the BJP councillor from the Palakkad municipality. On Sunday, the veteran RSS functionary made the remarks during a BJP protest in Palakkad against the LDF and UDF for disrespecting Bharat Mata. Sivarajan's comments drew widespread criticism from political parties. Amid the controversy, Sivarajan reiterated his demand that political parties should be barred from using flags that closely resemble the national tricolour. 'The Indian National Congress, NCP, Tamil Maanila Congress, and several other parties use flags that look like the national flag. This blurs the distinct identity of our national symbol.
