Mets Announce Kodai Senga News After Nationals Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The New York Mets completed a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals on Thursday afternoon at Citi Field, riding high after David Peterson's complete game shutout on Wednesday. Brandon Nimmo got the Mets off to a great start, hitting a three-run homer in the first inning before Jeff McNeil hit another homer in the fifth inning to put the Mets up 4-0.

All was going according to plan until the Mets were dealt a major blow after starting pitcher Kodai Senga exited the game. Entering the day with a stellar 6-3 record and a league-leading 1.59 ERA, Senga had been dominant all season.
Before departing, he delivered 5.2 scoreless innings and struck out five, blanking the Nationals lineup through nearly six frames.

In the sixth inning, covering first base, Senga leapt for a high throw from first baseman Pete Alonso. Upon landing, he grabbed the back of his right leg and collapsed. Though he walked off under his own power, the scene suggested a potential hamstring injury.

After New York held on to complete a 4-3 victory, the team announced via manager Carlos Mendoza that Senga has a hamstring strain and will go on the injured list (via Anthony DiComo of MLB.com).
Senga's absence will leave a substantial hole in the Mets' rotation. His sub‑2.00 ERA has anchored the staff and his ability to go deep into games has saved the bullpen. Without him, the Mets will need to rely more heavily on less-proven starters.
New York continues to lead the National League with a 45-24 record and will now hope to continue its six-game winning streak on Friday.

Braves' Chris Sale goes on 15-day IL with fractured rib cage suffered on diving catch

Chris Sale made an excellent diving stop on a grounder by Juan Soto for the first out of the ninth inning to finish off his start against the New York Mets on Wednesday night. Yet going hard to the ground cost the veteran left-hander a trip to the injured list. The Atlanta Braves announced on Saturday that Sale is going to the 15-day IL with a fractured ribcage. The injury occurred as Sale pitches his best game of the season, with 8 2/3 scoreless innings, five hits and one walk allowed, and seven strikeouts. Advertisement The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner has a 2.52 ERA (third among NL starting pitchers) and 5-4 record in 15 starts, compiling 114 strikeouts in 89 1/3 innings. With Wednesday's 5-0 win, the Braves (34-40) had victories in six of their past eight games, part of a stretch during which Atlanta won seven of 10. Perhaps more importantly for the NL East standings, For the Mets, the defeat was their fifth straight in what's become a seven-game losing streak that's knocked them out of first place (45-31) in the division. Sale's IL stint is backdated to Thursday, which would make him eligible to return on July 3. However, a rib injury could keep him out for a longer period. Sale suffered a stress fracture in his right rib cage before the 2022 season that sidelined him for more than three months.

Steelers Defensive Tackle Derrick Harmon Named to Preseason All-Rookie Team

Steelers Defensive Tackle Derrick Harmon Named to Preseason All-Rookie Team originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As coach Mike Tomlin said before the draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers had an "extreme urgency" to upgrade the defensive line, and that's exactly what they did. Advertisement By passing on a quarterback at No. 21 overall, general manager Omar Khan solidified the Steelers' defense-first mentality. Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon's selection might've given Pittsburgh an easy transition for when Cameron Heyward decides to hang up his cleats. Harmon was just named to Preseason All-Rookie Team as selected by writer Gennaro Filice. "Typically, this is the time of year when NOTHING is guaranteed. Coaches constantly stress that rookies -- no matter how highly they're drafted -- must earn their keep before even thinking about filling a starting slot. Apparently, though, the Steelers aren't doing that whole song and dance with Harmon. Instinctive and versatile with a well-rounded skill set, the first-round pick is the kind of defensive lineman who thrives in Pittsburgh. Advertisement "Harmon racked up an eye-popping 55 pressures in 2024 -- 12 more than any other FBS interior D-lineman, per PFF -- and now he gets to learn from a 15th-year pro with a doctorate in disruption, Cam Heyward." After rookie minicamp, voluntary OTAs and mandatory mincamp, Harmon is already impressing his coaches. "He goes out there with the ones," defensive line coach Karl Dunbar said last week, via "He's our left starting defensive tackle. You can write that." Harmon led the FBS last season with 34 quarterback pressures and as a defensive tackle, was second with a 10.7 percent pressure rate. Advertisement Last year, the Steelers' run defense collapsed en route to an 0-5 finish to the season, including the Wild Card loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Harmon should help prevent that this upcoming season. The Griffin Canning experience in New York has taken an unfortunate turn for the worse. The 29-year-old right-hander signed a one-year, $4.25 million deal that included up to $1 million in bonuses over the offseason, and the move looked like an absolute steal through the first few weeks of the season. Canning posted a sparkling 2.47 ERA over his first nine starts with the Mets as one of several surprising bright spots on the club's pitching staff. But he's gone the other way in the month-plus since. In his last five starts, Canning has posted an atrocious 6.75 ERA over 19 ⅔ innings pitched, ballooning his 2025 ERA to 3.80. After limiting free passes earlier this season, Canning has reverted back to his wild ways, walking 6.75 batters per nine innings over this rough stretch. His strikeouts per nine innings have dipped to 7.17, culminating in disaster for the former Angel. New York Mets pitcher Griffin Canning (L) reacts after being taken out of the ball game by New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza (R) in the fifth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Citi Field on Sunday, June 15, 2025. JASON SZENES/NY POST Mets manager Carlos Mendoza has been quick to give Canning the hook during this stretch – he's gone six innings just once over his past five starts and twice couldn't make it out of the third inning. Canning will take on the Phillies in Philadelphia on Saturday as he looks to get back on track. Learn all you need to know about MLB Betting The Phillies' offense got off to a slow start, but has looked like the stacked lineup we know it to be over the past month-and-a-half, posting a .745 on-base-plus-slugging since May 1, which ranked seventh in baseball before Friday's 10-2 win over the Mets. With how he's looked recently, it's time to fade Canning in a tough matchup.
