Cristian Chivu has managed to get his first win as Inter Milan coach.
It didn't come easy against Urawa Red Diamonds.
The Nerazzurri had nearly all of the possession of the ball.
However, Inter conceded early on, with Ryoma Watanabe scoring after they were caught out completely on the break within the first fifteen minutes.
From then on, the pattern was clear. Urawa Reds dug in and defended their penalty area, whilst Inter tried to break them down.
That proved to be a very difficult task. The Japanese team defended with composure, physicality, and organization. They didn't allow Inter any time or space to create telling chances.

In the end, it was Inter captain Lautaro Martinez who finally found the back of the net. And it was with Inter's first shot on target of the match.
The Argentine scored with an acrobatic overhead kick from a corner.
And then, it proved to be substitute Valentin Carboni who was decisive. The 20-year-old scored in stoppage time to break Urawa hearts and give Inter a vital first win at the Club World Cup.

Inter Milan started the match in a 3-4-2-1 shape. However, in the second half they changed things up to move of the classic 3-5-2 system that they've used for several years.

Nerazzurri coach Cristian Chivu explained the reason for this. 'We expected a different match,' he said.
'I didn't expect such a low block from them.'
Chivu said that Inter 'wanted superiority in the middle of the pitch, thinking that they'd try to press us higher up.'
'If we hadn't conceded, maybe I would have continued with the same system. But after going behind, we needed another striker in the area, to meet some crosses.'
'Because we weren't breaking through in the middle,' the Nerazzurri coach admitted.
'We added Pio, and had two box-to-box midfielders to attack the space behind.'
'We asked them to shoot from outside the area. And to cross. Those were our two objectives.'
Chivu then added that 'it's great for me how it ended.'

Shaquille O'Neal Explains Why James Harden Has Struggled In Big Games

Inglewood, California, USA; Los Angeles Clippers guard James Harden (1) controls the ball against the Denver Nuggets during the second half of game three in the first round for the 2024 NBA Playoffs at Intuit Dome. Mandatory Credit: Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images There was a lot to like about James Harden's 2024-25 season, but it ended in disappointment, just like so many others. Harden once again failed to deliver in a Game 7 as the Los Angeles Clippers were eliminated in the first round by the Denver Nuggets, and Shaquille O'Neal has a theory for why he struggles in these big games. "When you care, I can see it in your eyes," O'Neal said on The Big Podcast with Shaq. "We had a couple of Game 7s, and people didn't step up... I already knew they wasn't going to step up because it's the topic of conversation. If you have the I don't care attitude, you're going to take 30 shots, not f***ing eight, James Harden. Advertisement "When he was playing, I could tell he cares what people say," O'Neal added. "Still a Hall of Famer, you still make a lot of money, but you care what people say. You're just adding to your narrative." Harden finished with seven points (2-8 FG), five rebounds, 13 assists, two steals, and one block as the Clippers lost 120-101 in Game 7 to get eliminated. Just eight shot attempts in a game of that magnitude were unacceptable. Harden now averages 19.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 7.9 assists, 2.6 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game in Game 7s in his career and has a 3-4 record in them. The former MVP hasn't been the least bit efficient either, shooting 35.5% from the field and 22.4% from beyond the arc. This latest loss meant Harden became the first player in NBA history to lose a Game 7 with four different teams. The 11-time All-Star's last defeat prior to this was against the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Semifinals in 2023 when he was with the Philadelphia 76ers. Advertisement It was a similar story when it came to Harden in that loss to the Celtics. He had just nine points (3-11 FG), six rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and one block as the 76ers lost 112-88. Harden is no longer the incredible scorer he once was when he won three straight scoring titles from 2018 to 2020, but you'd still expect a lot more from him in these critical games. As O'Neal stated, the 35-year-old is just adding to that narrative about him being a playoff dropper. Despite all of Harden's struggles in the past, there was hope that things would be different this time around. He averaged 22.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 8.7 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game in 2024-25 and was so impressive that he even earned a spot on the All-NBA Third Team. Harden had 28 points in Game 6 against the Nuggets to help the Clippers stave off elimination. The stage was set for him to right the wrongs of the past, but he failed to deliver. Advertisement Someone who did not come up short in Game 7s during their career was O'Neal. He had a 3-1 record in them and averaged 26.3 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 0.5 steals, and 2.5 blocks per game. He shot at least 15 times in three of those four games and was the aggressive force that his teams needed him to be. Related: Ex-Rockets Teammate Highlights James Harden's Game 7 Shortcomings

James Harden Bluntly Reacts To Fan Telling Him To Win A Championship

James Harden Bluntly Reacts To Fan Telling Him To Win A Championship originally appeared on Fadeaway World. James Harden was just one of the many big names present at the Fanatics Fest at New York's Javits Center on Saturday. Harden was speaking on the stage at one point when a fan surprisingly yelled at him to win a championship. Advertisement "I will, I'm trying," Harden said. A championship is the only thing missing from Harden's resume. The 35-year-old has won an MVP, three scoring titles, and two assists titles in his 16 seasons in the NBA. Harden has also made 11 All-Star and eight All-NBA teams, and was voted into the NBA's 75th Anniversary team. For all of Harden's success, though, he has developed a reputation for being a playoff dropper. He has come up short one too many times in the postseason by now, and that was the case this year as well. Harden and the Los Angeles Clippers faced off against the Denver Nuggets in a thrilling first-round series in 2025. The series would go the distance, and the Clippers were given a shot at winning Game 7 in Denver. That much-anticipated clash would end up being a dud, though. Advertisement The Nuggets blew out the Clippers 120-101, and Harden was a no-show. He had just seven points (2-8 FG), five rebounds, 13 assists, two steals, and one block on the night. The defeat led to Harden becoming the first player in NBA history to lose a Game 7 with four different teams. While you can't always blame a player for a team's shortcomings, it's not unfair to point the finger at the guard. Harden averages 19.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 7.9 assists, 2.6 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game in Game 7s in his career. He struggles with efficiency, too, shooting 35.5% from the field and 22.4% from beyond the arc. This was a second straight first-round exit for Harden, and you wonder if he will ever accomplish that goal of winning a title. He made the NBA Finals in 2011 in just his second season in the league with the Oklahoma City Thunder, but hasn't gotten back to that stage since. Advertisement At this point, you wouldn't fancy Harden's chances of winning a championship with the Clippers either. They had a great opportunity to go on a deep run this year with Kawhi Leonard finally being healthy, but fell at the very first hurdle. Despite that setback, Harden and the Clippers are interested in continuing their partnership, according to HoopsHype's Michael Scotto. He has a $36.3 million player option for the 2025-26 season and is likely to decline it to sign a deal through the 2026-27 season. While Harden disappointed in the postseason, he does deserve to get a tidy extension this offseason. He averaged 22.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 8.7 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game in 2024-25 to make the All-NBA Third Team. It was a great bounce-back campaign, and it's a pity Harden wasn't able to end it on a positive note. Would Club World Cup Glory Make Up For Man City's Bad Season?

LINCOLN FINANCIAL FIELD, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, UNITED STATES - 2025/06/18: Josep Guardiola, ... (Photo by Nicolò Campo/LightRocket via Getty Images) Manchester City has so far avoided the upsets experienced by many of its European peers at the 2025 Club World Cup. While Chelsea suffered a 3-1 defeat to Flamengo and Paris Saint-Germain was toppled by Botafogo, Pep Guardiola's side coasted to a comfortable 2-0 win over Wydad in its opening fixture at the tournament. City can back this up with another victory over Al Ain on Sunday. Three points against the opponents from the United Arab Emirates would almost certainly secure its passage through to the Club World Cup quarter-finals with Manchester City among the favourites to go all the way and get its hands on the trophy. (Photo by Heuler Andrey/Eurasia) Guardiola is in the midst of a rebuild after a disappointing 2024/25 season. Manchester City was never a serious part of the Premier League title race and also suffered an early exit from the Champions League. The shock defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final compounded a dismal campaign by City's usual high standards. A glimpse of that rebuild was offered in the 2-0 win over Wydad when Rayan Cherki and Tijani Reijnders both started. Manchester City remains a work-in-progress, but has shown enough to suggest it could win the first expanded Club World Cup. According to Guardiola, though, this wouldn't make up for what unfolded last term. Head coach Pep Guardiola and Erling Haaland of Manchester City participate in the FIFA Club World ... (Photo by Ayman Aref/NurPhoto via Getty Images) 'I said many times, the season was not good,' said Guardiola when asked about his Club World Cup aims. 'When you finish third in the Premier League to qualify for the Champions League, it means 70 teams were worse than us. We played the FA Cup final in an incredibly high level against a really good team. The disappointment was the Champions League, we did not do really good. It was tough to handle it. 'Winning this competition is not going to change that but my mindset at the moment is not about winning the competition. We can extend our time here, being here longer. For the South American teams, the competition may be the maximum. For European teams, it is [just] a World Cup.' Guardiola is right to point out that the true measure of his Manchester City rebuild won't be taken at the Club World Cup. Nonetheless, success this summer would point the team in the right direction again ahead of the 2025/26 season when City will be expected to compete in the Premier League and Champions League again. This could set the tone.
