Al Ahly Exits CAF Champions League After Draw With Mamelodi
Cairo – SABA:
Egyptian club Al Ahly failed to continue its title defense in the CAF Champions League after a 1-1 draw against South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns in a match held on Friday.
Egyptian striker Taher Mohamed Taher gave the hosts—nicknamed "The Red Devils"—an early lead in the 24th minute of the first half. However, the South African side managed to equalize dramatically in the dying seconds, benefiting from an own goal scored by Al Ahly defender Yasser Ibrahim in the final minute of regular time at Cairo International Stadium.
Thanks to the away goals rule, Mamelodi Sundowns secured a spot in the CAF Champions League semifinals, having played to a goalless draw in the first leg in South Africa.
Mamelodi Sundowns will now await the winner of the other quarterfinal matchup between fellow Egyptian side Pyramids and South Africa's Orlando Pirates, currently underway.
