RM162m for social programmes: Chief Minister

Tuaran: The State Ministry of Community Development and People's Wellbeing and its agencies have been allocated more than RM162 million this year to implement various social programmes that benefit the people. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said RM76.29 million of the allocation is for the benefit of persons with disabilities (PwD), senior citizens, single mothers, children and orphans through the implementation of various specifically targeted assistance schemes.
Advertisement 'RM956,000 is allocated for programmes on people's wellbeing, covering aspects of family, consumerism, women's development and healthy lifestyles,' he said at the opening of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development's (KPWKM) Kembara Kasih Programme and the opening of the Sabah Mobile Local Social Support Centre (PSSS), here, Friday. Also present was Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. Hajiji said RM550,000 was channelled to the Sabah Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam) for programmes to curb drug abuse, especially among school students. He said KPWKM had also channelled various forms of assistance and services to the people of Sabah, including the Sabah Flood Disaster Assistance 2025.
Advertisement The allocation included by the National Welfare Foundation of RM300,000 and RM2.1 million allocated for the needs of 384 relief centres in the State. According to the Chief Minister, under the Federal Financial Assistance Programme, RM330 million had been allocated, of which RM315 million is for distribution to 45,572 aid recipients under the Social Welfare Department (JKM). Regarding the launch of the PSSS, Hajiji described the initiative as a timely and necessary response to the nation's growing mental health crisis. This comes in light of reports from the Health Ministry, revealing that more than five million Malaysians are currently struggling with depression, anxiety and stress, alongside a concerning rise in suicide cases. 'It is hoped that this mobile PSSS will be able to reach rural communities and provide much-needed psychosocial support, including for those affected by divorce, abuse, unemployment and financial burdens," he said. The KPWKM 2025 Kembara Kasih programme involves two main zones in Sabah, namely Tuaran, Papar and Penampang (Zone 1), as well as Lahad Datu, Kunak and Tawau (Zone 2), bringing together various government agencies to deliver comprehensive welfare services to the people. Hajiji also expressed hope that such programmes will continue and be expanded to other areas in the future as part of efforts to further enhance the people's wellbeing. RM200,000 allocated under RTP 2026 for further upgrades at Kota Sentosa Hospital

KUCHING (June 21): An allocation of RM200,000 under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) 2026 grant has been disbursed for further upgrading works on Kota Sentosa Hospital. This was announced by Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap at a recent ceremony held to mark the completion of an earlier RTP project worth RM400,000 at the hospital. 'This project may seem modest in scale, but its impact has been truly significant, addressing two critical needs of the hospital that have long required urgent attention,' he said. The completed project involved the construction of 40 new carpark spots complete with earthworks, bitumen-surfacing, carpark line painting, and drainage works, resolving a long-standing parking shortage for staff and visitors. Additionally, the occupational therapy and rehabilitation hall was comprehensively upgraded with full electrical rewiring, 11 new split-unit air-conditioners, new windows, a renovated stage and backdrop, a brick wall partition for an office and counselling room, and repainting throughout the facility. 'These improvements have created a more conducive, safe, and comfortable environment for both staff and patients,' added Yap. The assemblyman also expressed appreciation to the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), the implementing agency, for completing the project on time and in accordance with the set specifications. 'As the elected representative for Kota Sentosa, I remain deeply committed to fighting for more funding to ensure that our public health facilities are not left behind,' he said. Bursa Malaysia, Grab channel zakat to aid 500 kidney patients
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 500 kidney patients from the asnaf group in the Federal Territories will receive RM300 Grab ride vouchers each to help ease transportation to dialysis treatment centres. The RM150,000 contribution was made through wakalah zakat funds from Bursa Malaysia (RM100,000) and Grab Malaysia (RM50,000), under the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP). Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the initiative aims to ease the financial burden of patients who require long-term dialysis treatment. 'With the high cost of transportation, especially for those who need to travel several times a week, this burden can be overwhelming. 'This contribution may not be much, but I hope it can at least help make things easier for the patients so they can focus better on their treatment,' he said at the Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ)-MAIWP Ziarah Kasih programme at the Batu Muda MAIWP-PICOMS Haemodialysis Centre here today. Also present were University College of MAIWP International (UCMI) chief executive officer and vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Noor Inayah Yaakub, Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed and Grab Malaysia country operations and mobility director Rashid Shukor. Meanwhile, Fad'l said the wakalah zakat contribution reflected Bursa Malaysia's commitment to supporting initiatives that bring a positive impact to society. Melaka United ordered to pay nearly RM700,000 after player killed by lightning

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: The High Court in Melaka has ordered the Melaka United Soccer Association (Musa) to pay nearly RM700,000 following the death of an 18-year-old Australian player who was struck by lightning nine years ago. Stefan Petrovski, an 18-year-old goalkeeper with Melaka United, was hit by lightning while training at the Hang Jebat Stadium on April 3, 2016. He died nearly a month later, on May 1, from brain damage caused by a lack of oxygen. Advertisement His father, Marco Petrovski, sued Musa and 15 of its officials for negligence and failing to provide a safe environment for his son. The family claimed that no automated external defibrillators (AED) were available during training, no doctor was present at the session, and training was not stopped despite rain increasing the risk of lightning. They also said Musa failed to take out a personal accident insurance policy as required by the player's contract. Justice Radzi Abdul Hamid ruled that Musa was negligent and had a duty of care to protect Petrovski as a professional player. The court awarded AU$192,000 (RM528,000) for loss of dependency, RM120,000 for failure to insure the player, and RM50,000 in legal costs. The judge rejected Musa's defence that a panel doctor did not have to be present at training sessions, stating that Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) rules required at least one doctor to be available during both matches and training. 'The defendants contended that under FAM regulations, a doctor does not need to be at the training session,' said Radzi. 'This court disagreed with the defendants' contention… It makes no sense to appoint the doctor who is absent and must be called to the location in the event of a medical emergency. 'The defendants also failed to adequately train their staff to use AED, as well as to respond to cardiac related emergencies, which contributed to Petrovski's death.'
