KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 (Bernama) -- The ASEAN Year of Skills (AYOS) 2025, launched under Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship, aims to bridge talent gaps across member states to create a more agile and competitive regional workforce.
Led by the Ministry of Human Resources through the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp), AYOS 2025 carries the theme 'Bridging Talent, Building ASEAN', underscoring the urgent need to connect skills and opportunities among ASEAN nations.
'This year-long initiative aims to unlock the full potential of the ASEAN workforce and propel regional talent development to new heights,' said HRD Corp in a statement today.
It said the initiative seeks to address five key objectives, such as bridging skills gaps across member states, promoting talent mobility to enhance workforce agility and ensuring inclusive growth that uplifts all communities.
It also aims to strengthen regional collaboration for shared prosperity and to enhance public-private partnerships to future-proof the workforce.
Launched on April 14 at the Connexion Conference & Event Centre (Nexus), Bangsar South here, AYOS 2025 is supported by key regional partners, including the International Labour Organisation and the ASEAN Secretariat.
According to the statement, the initiative underscores the importance of collective action among member states to tackle regional inequalities, unlock youth potential and enhance workforce resilience.
Throughout the year, AYOS 2025 will feature seven flagship events to drive collaboration and innovation, including the ASEAN Human Capital Development Investment Symposium (AHCDIS), National Training Week, ASEAN Training Market Conference, ASEAN TVET Conference, National Human Capital Conference & Exhibition 2025, Global Skills Forum and the ASEAN Forum of Manpower Ministers for Human Capital Development.
Meanwhile, at the national level, each ASEAN member state is supported by dedicated National Coordinators and Ambassadors who act as the primary liaisons within their countries.

Negeri Sembilan To Provide Affordable Homes For Asnaf Families

SEREMBAN, June 23 (Bernama) – The Negeri Sembilan government, through the Negeri Sembilan Islamic Religious Council (MAINS), will soon begin acquiring affordable homes under the Rumah Mawaddah programme to assist eligible asnaf families in financial hardship, particularly those without land ownership. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said the initial phase will involve the purchase of 13 Type A affordable housing units, each priced at RM110,000. He noted that while MAINS previously constructed three-bedroom, two-bathroom houses on land owned by asnaf at RM100,000 per unit, the new initiative targets those without land by providing completed homes directly. Speaking to reporters after officiating the Zakat and Construction Synergy Seminar here today, Aminuddin said MAINS built 12 Rumah Mawaddah units last year for RM1.2 million, with another four units (RM400,000) currently under development and expected to be completed by June. He added that the state government remains committed to promoting balanced material and spiritual development, aligned with the Malaysia MADANI framework, which emphasises social responsibility, inclusiveness and shared prosperity. 'Business zakat contributed by Muslim contractors not only increases overall zakat collections but also lays the foundation for a sustainable and inclusive development ecosystem, ultimately benefiting the poor and underprivileged,' he said. MAINS Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Aziz Sheikh Ab Kadir, who was also present, announced the launch of the EZp Zakat Business Assessment Declaration, an online platform designed to streamline submission, verification and transparency for corporate zakat assessments. 'This declaration will serve as the official document for business zakat contributions based on accurate calculations. I believe this initiative will drive greater awareness and compliance among Muslim-owned companies, further strengthening the ummah's economic ecosystem in line with Maqasid Shariah principles,' he said. -- BERNAMA

KESUMA Urges Workers Paid Below RM1,700 To Report To Labour Dept

PUTRAJAYA, June 23 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) has urged employees earning less than the RM1,700 minimum wage to promptly lodge a complaint with the Department of Labour (JTK). It said all parties are required to comply with minimum wage regulations to protect the welfare and rights of workers in the country and warned that legal action would be taken against any violation of the National Wages Consultative Council Act 2011 (Act 732). Referring to a media report alleging that tour bus drivers were only receiving a basic salary of RM700 a month without fixed allowances, the ministry explained that under the Minimum Wages Order (PGM) 2024, which is currently in force, employers are required to ensure that workers receive a minimum wage of RM1,700 per month, regardless of whether this is through a basic salary structure or total monthly earnings. 'If the employer stipulates a basic salary in the contract of service, the rate must not be less than the prevailing minimum wage. 'If the contract does not state a basic salary, the employer must ensure that the monthly wage paid is not less than the prevailing minimum wage, excluding other allowances. PGM 2024 also applies to part-time workers,' it said in a statement today. KESUMA said JTK will step up monitoring and enforcement action on complaints or wage deduction violations that contravene the PGM. If a worker's complaint is upheld in court, the employer may be ordered to pay the wage difference and any affected allowances, in accordance with Section 44 of Act 732. A news portal on June 21 reported that express and tour bus drivers were earning as little as RM700 in basic salary per month, with some not receiving any base pay at all. The situation has reportedly forced them to rely on travel allowances and overtime just to make ends meet, sacrificing rest days and working nearly every day.
