The Mysuru Regional Chapter of the Indian Home Science Association (HSAI) was inaugurated here on Friday.
The chapter will function from the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, the University of Mysore. Authorities said that it would enhance academic collaboration, community engagement, and professional development in the field of Home Science.
M. Komala, president, HSAI–MRC, Mysuru, said that Home Science was an interdisciplinary subject encompassing areas such as Food Science and Nutrition, Human Development and Family Studies, Textiles and Apparel Design, Resource Management, and Extension Education and Communication.
Integrating knowledge from various disciplines, it bends scientific and artistic elements and is geared towards empowering individuals by imparting knowledge and skills for personal and professional use, she added.
Prof. Komala said the Indian Home Science Association was founded in the 1940s at Maharaja Sayajirao University in Vadodara, and the University of Mysore and HSAI recently signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly promote education, research, and community outreach in the field of Home Science.
N.K. Lokanath, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore, inaugurated the chapter here. A revised edition of the book 'Handbook of Food and Nutrition' was released on the occasion. Edited by Jamuna Prakash, the book includes current research, food indices, and national nutrition policies and programmes, said Prof. Komala.

International Yoga Day: Over 3,000 expected to participate in mass yoga session in front of Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru

To mark International Yoga Day, celebrated on June 21, over 3,000 people, including yoga experts, are expected to participate in a synchronised mass yoga demonstration session in front of the Vidhana Soudha from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Saturday. This session will be in line with the Union AYUSH Ministry's 'Yoga Sangama' initiative, under which synchronised mass yoga sessions are planned at over one lakh locations across India on June 21. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, apart from several film actors, will participate in the Vidhana Soudha event. Addressing presspersons after releasing Yoga Day posters on Tuesday, Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said all participants would follow the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP). 'This year's theme 'Yoga for one earth, one health' highlights yoga's role in promoting physical, mental, and environmental well-being, aligning with global calls for sustainability and unity,' he said. The promotional programmes include 'Yoga Dhanush', 'Yoga Unplugged', 'Green Yoga', 'Yogadhyana', and 'Yoga Sangama'. While 'Yoga Dhanush' and 'Yoga Unplugged' are being conducted across the State, the remaining programmes will be rolled out in due course at the district level, Mr. Gundu Rao said. About 5,000 people are expected to participate in separate yoga demonstration sessions to be held in every district as part of the Yoga Day events. Seminars on yoga and its benefits on health will be held in the University of Mysore, NIMHANS, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, and Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences in the last week of June. That apart, awareness jathas and human chains will also be organised as part of the Yoga Day events, the Minister said. Proposal to declare Mysuru as 'Yoga district' The State has sent a proposal to the Centre urging that Mysuru district be declared as 'Yoga district'. Under this, at least one member of each household in this district will learn and practice yoga. This year, a massive yoga session under the title 'Yoga Mahakumba' will be held on the Mysuru palace premises and about 15,000 people are expected to participate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had led the Yoga Day celebrations at the Mysuru palace in 2022, and the venue is one of the iconic platforms to promote not only yoga but also Mysuru tourism.

Mysuru: Social welfare minister HC Mahadevappa on Wednesday hailed the contributions of erstwhile Mysuru Maharaja Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and credited him for making Mysuru a centre of attraction in India with the successful implementation of a slew of development projects. The Maharaja's reforms, empowerment of underprivileged classes, and promotion of education, agriculture, banks, and several other sectors of overall development of the erstwhile Mysuru state grabbed the attention of people across the country, he noted. He was speaking after offering floral tribute to the portrait of Krishnaraja Wadiyar on account of his birth anniversary celebrations organised jointly by the district administration and the department of Kannada and culture, held at Kalamandir in the city. The minister also appreciated the Maharaja for his illustrious administration, vision, wisdom, and simplicity. Mysuru was one of the first cities to be lit with streetlights in the Asian continent during his regime, Mahadevappa, who is Mysuru district minister, said. His focus on industrial growth not only paved the way for the promotion of industries and allied activities, but it also generated jobs and propelled the growth of the economy, the minister said. The minister also highlighted that the Maharaja established the University of Mysore and State Bank of Mysore and focused on health facilities, promoting Krishnarajendra Hospital, Cheluvamba Hospital, and PKTB Sanitorium. The establishment of PKTB Sanitorium for the treatment of tuberculosis patients in memory of his sisters who died from the dreaded disease still ensures better service to the people of the region, he pointed out. The minister described Krishnaraja Wadiyar as one of the best administrators who not only walked the talk, but also laid the strong foundation to build modern Karnataka in the country. Minister of Kannada and culture, other backward classes Shivaraj Tangadagi said that govt is celebrating the birth anniversary of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar not only to remember his contributions but also to popularise his life and works to educate the younger generation. MLA TS Srivatsa, MLC D Thimmaiah, deputy commissioner G Lakshmikanth Reddy, and joint director of Kannada and culture VN Mallikarjuna Swamy were present. A colourful procession carrying the portrait of Krishnaraja Wadiyar on a flower-decorated silver chariot, with folk artistes dancing, and Nandi Dwaja, took place on the main streets of the city from Kote Anjaneya Swamy Temple to Kalamandir. In addition, various organisations also celebrated his Jayanthi as a grand affair in the city. Meanwhile, MP and Mysore royal family member Yaduveer Wadiyar distributed free ration kits to over 3,500 pourakarmikas on behalf of the royal family to take care of their family members for one month at the function held at the Maharaja's College grounds. The Ursu Mandali Sangha also celebrated the event with a grand event at its premises on Tyagaraja Road in Agrahara. The MP offered floral tribute to the Maharaja.
