Conor Coady a Rangers transfer target as Russell Martin plots Leicester City centre back raid

Yahoo13-06-2025

New Rangers boss Russell Martin is weighing up a move for Leicester City defender Conor Coady.
The Ibrox gaffer - along with sporting director Kevin Thelwell - has immediately drawn up a list of targets for the new season.

And Record Sport understands Martin is exploring the idea of bringing former England centre-back Coady to Glasgow.

The 32-year-old has a year left on his contract at the King Power but his future is uncertain with the Foxes' managerial situation up in the air.
Ironically, Leicester wanted Martin to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy but he chose to take on the Rangers job.

Martin was unveiled at Ibrox on Thursday and is now working alongside Thelwell on their summer recruitment plans.
Coady, who has 10 caps for England, is a player who is on their radar.
The Scouser spent eight years at Wolves where he became captain before moving to Leicester for £7.5 million in 2023.
Coady played 22 games in the Premier League last season as the club was relegated back to the Championship.
It's unclear how much Rangers would have to pay for the ball-playing defender with just 12 months left on his deal.
But Martin is an admirer of Coady, while Thelwell previously worked with him at Everton when he spent a year on loan at Goodison Park.

With Rangers' Dutch defender Robin Propper rumoured to be on the verge of a return to Holland and Leon Balogun already out the door, the new gaffer is in the market for an experienced centre-half.
And Coady is someone Martin has a concrete interest in.

Pirates' offense finally comes alive in win over Rangers; unlikely sources deliver

This article originally appeared on It took until the fifth inning on Sunday for the Pirates to claim their first lead of the series against the Rangers, but once they got it, they kept their foot on the gas. Advertisement Five different Pirates' players had multi-hit games while three drove in multiple runs in an 8-3 win to avoid the series sweep at PNC Park. The Rangers (38-40) jumped ahead 2-0 in the second inning before the Pirates (31-48) responded with seven unanswered runs. Ke'Bryan Hayes got the Pirates on the board with an RBI single to right, and Tommy Pham tied the game 2-all with a sacrifice fly. Fantasy baseball: The relievers that can propel your playoff push

Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. With power down across the board and such a massive run of injuries to starting pitchers, categories like saves and steals can be the difference-makers you need to win your fantasy baseball championship. Though you can find steals in a variety of places on your waiver wire, finding saves can be a little more difficult. We aren't seeing as much volatility at the position as we have in years past, but there are still a few bullpens that should warrant your attention. The first two places to check out are the Rangers and the Cubs. Left-hander Robert Garcia seems to have settled in as the closer for the Rangers, and Danny Palencia seems to be favored over Ryan Pressly for the Cubs. Robert Garcia has been a stabilizing force at the back-end of the bullpen for the Texas Rangers. Getty Images It doesn't feel like Garcia is on solid ground, but given the chronic failures of Luke Jackson and Chris Martin, Garcia going 4-for-6 on save chances seems to be the direction manager Bruce Bochy wants to lean. He prefers to have one guy working the ninth, as we've seen in his managerial stops in San Diego and San Francisco, so expect the leash to stay lengthened. As for the Cubs' situation, Palencia should be your target for now, but don't expect manager Craig Counsell to sit on his hands and hope for the best. He is notorious for playing matchups, which is why you still see Pressly listed as part of the Cubs' closing team. But Palencia has been incredibly reliable lately, having allowed just one run over his past 11 appearances, and seems fairly entrenched. He should carry the bulk of the work for now, but stay vigilant on the progress of righty Porter Hodge. He's recovering from an oblique and hip issue and is headed for his rehab assignment. If all looks good, he could be closing in the second half. One more speculative add can be found with the Diamondbacks. With Arizona announcing closer Justin Martinez is heading into Tommy John surgery, the back end of their bullpen just got flipped upside down. Right-hander Shelby Miller appears to be the safe pick for now if he is available, but given the history and his career 4.04 ERA and 1.32 WHIP, he just doesn't seem long for the role. In fact, no one on this roster seems long for the role. Justin Martinez of the Arizona Diamondbacks will undergo Tommy John Surgery. Getty Images Should Miller fail and with no prospects on the horizon, manager Torey Lovullo may just have to turn to veteran Kevin Ginkel once again. He has been roughed up recently, but he has posted solid ratios over the past three seasons and is literally the only guy on this staff with any experience in the role. Learn all you need to know about MLB Betting Finding saves on your waiver wire has become a much tougher task than in years past. We haven't completely gone back to the late-'90s, when more than a dozen guys were notching 40-plus saves, but the lack of volatility makes your waiver-wire selections that much more important. Stay ahead of your competition and keep studying those bullpens that are still seeing movement. Adding even just one arm for saves could be your ticket to a title. 'Celtic agree fee and contract for Nygren'

Celtic have agreed a £1.28m fee to sign Sweden forward Benjamin Nygren from Nordsaelland, with the 23-year-old signing a contract until June 2029 plus an option until 2030. (Fabrizio Romano on X) Celtic are among several overseas clubs looking closely at 25-year-old £1.5m-rated Kawasaki Frontale striker Shin Yamada. (Scottish Sun On Sunday) Advertisement PSV Eindhoven are now ahead of Celtic and Lille in the queue to sign Sarpsborg winger Sondre Orjasaeter, with the 21-year-old's asking price having risen to £11m compared to the £7m mentioned when the Scottish champions were first linked with him in January. (TV Sport 2 via The Herald On Sunday) Any move by RB Leipzig for 25-year-old Celtic winger Nicolas Kuhn is likely to be held up until the German club appoint a new head coach. (Merkur) Birmingham City are just one of a string enquiries to be made about former Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi, with Rennes preferring a permanent exit for the 30-year-old, although they may be willing to green light a temporary one. (L'Equipe via The Herald On Sunday) Bournemouth right-back Max Aarons has agreed to move to Rangers on loan, with both clubs having signed all the documents and with formal steps to follow for the 25-year-old. (Fabrizio Romano on X) Advertisement Max Aarons rejected approaches from Burnley and Leeds United, along with a host of Championship clubs, before agreeing to join Rangers on loan from Bournemouth. (The Boot Room) It was said on ERA sport that Rangers, AEK Athens and Cyriel Dessers have reached a full agreement for the 30-year-old striker to complete a transfer to the Greek club. (AEK Guy on X) Rangers are determined on keeping 22-year-old forward Hamza Igamane at the club beyond the summer transfer window despite interest from Everton and West Ham United. (Football Insider) Rangers could miss out on striker Dor Turgeman because Maccabi Tel Aviv may be reluctant to sell the 21-year-old, or will significantly raise the asking price, because of fears the rising conflict in the Middle East will make it more difficult for them to attract a replacement signing. (Sport 5 via Glasgow Times) Advertisement Luka Jelenic has attracted interest from Rangers and Vitoria Guimaraes and Rangers, but there are no official offers yet for the 25-year-old centre-half who Osijek bought for £685,000 last season from Varazdin. (24sata via Croatian Football on X) Ianis Hagi, who has been linked with Genoa and Borussia Monchengladbach, has confirmed he is in talks with Polish club Legia Warsaw following the 26-year-old Romania midfielder's release by Rangers. (The National On Sunday) Wrexham and Stockport County are interested in Tom Lawrence following the 31-year-old midfielder's release by Rangers. (Sky Sports) Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal made an enquiry for Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay, but the Italian champions did not even discuss a deal as they have no intention of selling the 28-year-old Scotland international. (Football Italia) Advertisement Dundee United are keen on a loan move for Toulouse striker Said Hamulic, once a transfer target for Celtic, talks have advanced well in recent days and the 24-year-old could arrive in Scotland as soon as this week. (The Courier) Hibernian head coach David Gray says talks to sign Sunderland midfielder Nectatrios Triantis on a permanent deal are progressing well following the 22-year-old Australian's loan last season. (Sky Sports via Daily Record) Kevin Nisbet, who was on loan to Aberdeen from Millwall last season, is not a target for Heart of Midlothian, with head coach Derek McInnes hopeful of convincing fellow Scotland striker Lawrence Shankland to stay at Tynecastle Park. (Hearts Standard) Nicolas Milanovic rejected offers from a number of European clubs before signing for Aberdeen and the striker has the weapons to take the Scottish Premiership and European group stage football by storm, according to Western Sydney Wanderers head coach Alen Stajcic, whose club sold the 23-year-old for a fee of around £400,000. (Press & Journal) Advertisement Josh Rae, the 24-year-old goalkeeper who has joined Raith Rovers permanently from St Johnstone, has revealed he rejected a move to Atletico Madrid at the age of 13. (The Courier) St Johnstone owner Adam Webb believes the summer planning at McDiarmid Park has been "night and day" in comparison to when he walked in the door 12 months ago, when recruitment mistakes were made.
