Fernando hits century as Bartestree & Lugwardine win again
OPENER Saminda Fernando hit a century as Bartestree & Lugwardine recorded a 37-run away win against Himley seconds.
After beating Bromyard the previous weekend Bartestree started with a bang as wicket keeper Fernando led the way, blazing a fast, hard-hitting 109 from 91 balls – including 14 4s and three 6s.
A determined half-century from skipper Ryan Trattell contributed to a total of 256-9 - the wickets down not giving a true picture as four batsmen fell in a mad dash to pile on a few more runs in the last two overs.
Flurries of rain and consultation of Duckworth-Lewis led to Himley chasing a reduced target, but tight bowling and good fielding meant that the visitors were never anywhere near the run rate.
With the ball Owen Beynon took 2-38, while there were also wickets for Thomas O'Connor, Trattell and Edward Webb.
The Bartestree firsts go up a notch to sixth spot in Division 1 and host local rivals Colwall this weekend. Bartestree & Lugwardine seconds hosted Builth Wells in the Worcestershire County League Division Seven (South) - this division now contains a lot of ex-Marches firsts, which makes it a tough one.
Despite wickets for the home side's young bowlers, the experienced Builth batting built a massive 280.
Wicket keeper Sam Pratley was a crucial cog in the seconds' fielding performance taking five catches of the eight wickets gained.
With the ball Ethan Bartlett took 4-60 and Noah Pratley also struck 3-50 in their attack.
Undaunted, the Bartestree response got stuck in, with Chris Tulacz stroking an excellent 68. The final total of 218 would have won most matches, but not today.
The Bartestree seconds' league position does not do justice to their performances so far - small margins could have meant wins several times.
Bartestree bid farewell to Owen Robinson, his jaunty flair and fine cricketing skills will be missed.
Meanwhile, Bartestree thirds completed a 37-run win away at Malvern thirds after posting an impressive target of 266-8, to extended their position at the top of Division Nine Worcestershire South.
Mark Chapman led the way with another big innings of 71, with strong support from Nick Freeman on 49, and notably young Miles Anderson in his first match for the thirds, with 22.
A total of 266 looked like a winning total, but Malvern had a good crack at it, reaching 229.
Three wickets to the spin of young Elliot Gale – the young talent is coming on so well and will soon be knocking on the door of the firsts.
There was jubilation for Bartestree & Lugwardine fourths as they beat Fownhope Strollers by two wickets.
With a credit to the very young players making their start in senior cricket, after learning their craft in our junior teams with our excellent coaches.
The bowling of Avi Singh contributed with 3-9 off 5 overs and 15 runs.
There was also strong support from the more experienced players making it a formidable team.

Philadelphia Phillies, Lancaster-based company surprise family with backyard makeover after losing father
The Phillies and a Lancaster County-based company partnered to surprise a Malvern family with a backyard makeover following a family loss in 2023. Ray, Sammy and Gio Almada lost their father two years ago. This week, they were gifted a backyard transformation — complete with a Phillies-themed swing set, Adirondack chairs, a wiffle ball field and new landscaping. The project was spearheaded by King's Swings, a family-owned business known for building custom outdoor play sets. "We're always trying to provide the ultimate backyard experience where families can gather and make memories with their children," said Elmer King, the company's owner. King, a father of five himself, said this build held special meaning. "They've been through a lot, so we're happy to help," he said. "I'm sure yesterday was a rough day with Father's Day, but hopefully today can be a better day." Ray, Sammy, and Gio Almada lost their father two years ago. The Phillies joined the effort, sending staff and volunteers to help bring the surprise to life. Among them was Phillies ball girl Allyson Meakim, who shared a glimpse of the setup before the reveal. "We're setting up a wiffle ball field for the surprise … there's home plate," she said. The final touches included flowers, planted by Phillies Ballpark Operations Manager Ed Speer. "As much as we can try to make them feel the love that their father had for them," Speer said. When the boys finally saw their new backyard, they were stunned. "I bet I can go higher than you!" 9-year-old Gio Almada shouted to the Phillie Phanatic as he got on the swing set. When asked what his backyard looks like now, Gio Almada didn't hesitate. "A baseball stadium/fun park! I love playing on the swings," he said. "So now that there's swings in my backyard, I'll be here every day." For their mother, Diane Almada, watching her sons light up offered a glimmer of hope in the midst of grief. "There's still hope for the kids to have happiness, of course," she said. As for King, who's built swing sets for more than a decade, this one stood out. "It's so rewarding to see it all come together," he said. "It's been gold."

Netflix Lands Untitled Action Comedy Feature Starring Andy Samberg and Jason Momoa — GeekTyrant
In a highly competitive bidding war involving several studios and streamers, Netflix has landed an exciting action comedy film with Jason Momoa ( Aquaman , A Minecraft Movie ) and Andy Samberg ( SNL , Brooklyn Nine-Nine ) set to star. The currently untitled film is set in Momoa's native Hawaii, though further details as to the plot are under wraps. Samberg's Party Over Here and Momoa's On The Roam will produce. The script will be written by a pair of highly decorated SNL alums - 11x Emmy nominee Rob Klein and eight-time nominee John Solomon. A director has not yet been selected. Momoa's upcoming slate includes Amazon's action comedy The Wrecking Crew , where he stars opposite Dave Bautista, as well as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow , where he fulfills his longtime ambition to play intergalactic alien Lobo. On August 1st, he unveils Chief of War , the Apple historical epic he co-created with Thomas Pa'a Sibbett, in which he also stars. Then, there's Animal Friends , a live-action/animated road trip action comedy, where he stars alongside Ryan Reynolds, Aubrey Plaza, and Vince Vaughn, which opens October 10th. Next up, Momoa will reprise his role as Duncan Idaho in Dune 3, which rolls cameras in July.
