Trumponomics: How US president Donald Trump has triggered a financial roller coaster; shaken global markets in 5 months
Ever since US President Donald Trump took office, five months ago, his economic policies have unleashed widespread volatility across global financial markets, triggering investor pullback, a weakening dollar, and a sharp divergence in global stock performance.
Here is a look at the financial roller-coaster rise:
Wall street
After years of dominating global markets, US stocks are now lagging behind — with Europe reaping the gains.
Since the start of the year, Wall Street's S&P 500 index has risen just two percent, while Frankfurt's main index has surged 16 percent. London and Paris have also outperformed, recording gains of eight and three percent respectively.
Kevin Thozet of investment firm Carmignac attributed the underperformance to President Trump's inconsistent stance on tariffs.
Thozet told AFP that the president's shifting stance on tariffs had fuelled significant uncertainty around how they might affect economic growth.
Dollar
The US dollar has shed 10 percent of its value against the euro over the past six months, its steepest decline in three decades, according to Robert Farago, analyst at British investment firm Hargreaves Lansdown.
While President Trump's tariff policies are seen as the primary driver, mounting concerns over the ballooning US debt, amplified by a costly presidential budget proposal, have further weighed on the currency.

Though some have floated the idea of the Chinese yuan as a possible alternative to the dollar, ECB President Christine Lagarde recently highlighted the euro's potential for a stronger international role.
Still, significant hurdles remain for any currency seeking to challenge the dollar's dominance.
Debt
American debt has long been seen as a bedrock of the global financial system, with investors worldwide turning to US Treasury bonds as a safe haven.
But that confidence is starting to crack. JPMorgan Chase chief Jamie Dimon recently warned that the ballooning US debt is a "real problem" and that bond markets are entering a "tough time."
At the end of May, yields on 30-year US Treasury bonds crossed the key five percent threshold—an indication of waning faith in America's ability to manage its debt.
"I've always told clients they need US debt if they want an asset that remains intact even in a disaster, but I think that's no longer the case," said Alexandre Hezez, strategist at Banque Richelieu.
Adding to the concern, Steve Sosnick of Interactive Brokers noted that the dollar is weakening even as interest rates rise, "a sign that money is leaving the US."
Oil
Donald Trump made lowering oil prices a key priority in his efforts to curb US inflation.
In April, crude prices dipped below $60 a barrel, their lowest level since 2021. However, this drop was driven less by policy success and more by market fears. Investors, rattled by Trump's tariff moves, anticipated a global economic slowdown that would weaken demand.
More recently, rising tensions in the Middle East have pushed prices back up. The military escalation between Israel and Iran has driven oil back to around $75 a barrel.
Gold and crypto winning the game
Gold has traditionally been seen as the ultimate safe haven during times of uncertainty and 2025 has been no different. Soaring demand has pushed its value up by nearly 30 percent since the start of the year.
Much of this rally has been fuelled by major central banks, which are increasingly turning to gold over the US dollar to shore up their reserves.
At the same time, Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind cryptocurrencies. Alongside his personal investments, his administration has introduced measures to integrate digital assets more firmly into the financial system.
Bitcoin surged past the $100,000 mark for the first time shortly after the US election, capping off a nearly 60 percent gain over the past year.

Rajnath to attend SCO Defence Ministers' meeting in China
In his first such visit since Operation Sindoor, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will travel to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers' meet in Qingdao from June 25 to 27. Pakistan Defence Minister Khwaja Asif too will attend the meeting. The visit comes as India and China take steps to restore ties, including the resumption of trade and travel links as well as dialogue mechanisms. Also Read: Influencing interlocutors: On Operation Sindoor, India's delegations In addition, the Indian pilgrims bound for Kailash-Mansarovar – the first batch to undertake the trip since the 2020 military stand-off and Galwan killings – are also expected to reach their destination at the same time as Mr. Singh's visit to Qingdao. The steps are part of the 'normalisation' process agreed to by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping during their meeting in Kazan in October 2024, after a tense four-year military stand-off on the Line of Actual Control. Both leaders are expected to attend the BRICS summit in Brazil from July 6 to 7, while Mr. Modi has been invited to the SCO Heads of State Summit in Tianjin, China, later this year. Sources said that in Qingdao, which hosts a significant Chinese naval base, Mr. Singh will hold bilateral talks with Chinese Defence Minister Admiral Dong and Russian counterpart Andrey Belousov on the sidelines of the conference. While Mr. Singh had met Admiral Dong during the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting-Plus in Laos last November, this will be their first exchange since the four-day India-Pakistan conflict, where Chinese military hardware support to Pakistan was significant. Mr. Singh is expected to meet other Defence Ministers from the SCO states that also include Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus, while sources said no meeting with the Pakistani Defence Minister is on the cards. SCO members are expected to discuss defence and security cooperation, along with the SCO's special Regional Anti-Terror Structure (RATS) mechanism, during the meeting. As the conflict between Israel and Iran escalates, Mr. Singh's participation at the SCO conference will also be watched closely for India's position. Last week, India disassociated itself from a statement issued by the SCO that had 'strongly condemned' Israel for its strikes on Iran on June 13, and said Israel's 'aggressive actions' on civilian targets and infrastructure were a 'gross violation of international law and the United Nations Charter'. India said it had not been part of the discussion on the statement and issued its own separate statement.

Premiumisation drives growth for alcobev companies
Bengaluru: India's alcoholic beverage sector continued to outpace broader consumer categories, driven by strong demand for premium brands, margin stability, and state-level policy reforms, according to new industry and company disclosures. Data from Motilal Oswal shows alcobev companies under coverage posted aggregate revenue growth of 12% year-on-year in the January-March quarter (Q4 FY25), with net profit rising 53%. Premium segment volumes led the momentum, with United Breweries recording 24% growth in its prestige & above (P&A) segment, Radico Khaitan at 17%, and United Spirits at 9%. P&A is an industry term commonly used in India's alcobev sector to refer to premium and higher-priced product portfolios. "The shift towards premiumisation is what is driving the Indian alcohol industry today. While companies historically relied heavily on mass-market brands, most players are now focusing on building premium and luxury brands to improve margins," Anant Iyer, Director General of the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC), told TOI. In the last five years, several Indian companies started investing in their own malt distilleries instead of fully depending on Scotch imports, aiding premiumisation, Iyer added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Scam Exposed: What They Won't Tell You about zero trust! Expertinspector Click Here Undo R adico Khaitan, which reported 16.8% growth in P&A volumes during the quarter, attributed the trend to evolving consumer preferences and rising affluence. "We expect to continue to deliver 15% plus P&A volume growth for FY26," Amar Sinha, chief operating officer at Radico Khaitan, told TOI. Raw material costs, which pressured margins earlier, have largely stabilised, aiding profitability across the sector. "With raw material prices showing some signs of stabilisation, we remain cautiously optimistic that margin trends will continue to see improvement in the 2025-26 financial year," Sinha added. Iyer pointed to state-level pricing controls as a persistent challenge for the industry. "Excise authorities across most states still control pricing. Unlike essential commodities, alcohol pricing is heavily regulated, limiting the industry's ability to price products freely even as input costs rise," he said. Recent policy changes in Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh have eased some regulatory barriers, improving market access and predictability, according to companies. "The states have been adopting progressive policies aimed at promoting stability and predictability in the regulatory environment, which is likely to encourage ease of doing business," Sinha said. India's luxury whisky segment is also seeing increasing global acceptance. "Indian single malts and luxury whiskies are now selling at price points equal to or even higher than imported Scotch in several markets," Iyer said, noting brands such as Amrut, Rampur, Indri, Gianchand, Doab, and Crazy Cock that are priced between Rs 4,000 and Rs 20,000 a bottle. "Today, brands like Rampur and Indri are selling at $55 to $80 per bottle overseas, often higher than Scotch or Irish Single Malts, which sell at $40 to $50 in the US. " As India negotiates free trade agreements with the UK, EU, US, and others, domestic players have raised concerns about the potential influx of cheaper imports. "Cheap imports could seriously hurt domestic producers of spirits and wines if not handled carefully. We have consistently urged the government to impose a minimum import price to ensure a level playing field," Iyer added. While certain discretionary segments face weaker demand trends, the alcobev sector has remained relatively resilient. "Consumers are showing a growing preference for artisanal, small-batch craft spirits, reflecting a rising appreciation for authenticity, quality, and craftsmanship. Authenticity and storytelling are becoming strong purchase drivers," Sinha said.
