Utah Hockey Club Makes Trade With Blackhawks Ahead of Matchup
Just ahead of tonights matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks, Utah HC has made a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks.
Utah acquire a 2026 5th-round pick in exchange for Victor Söderström, Aku Räty and Shea Weber.
None of the three players are currently on Utah's active roster, with Söderström playing for Brynäs IF in the Swedish Hockey League, Räty playing in the AHL, and Weber having retired at the end of the 2020-21 season before being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame last year.
For clarity, the Weber contract carries a $7.85 million cap hit, but the actual money the team owes him is only $1 million. This is a cheap way for Chicago to get to the cap floor next season. https://t.co/qw5RrwpzuE

The trade isn't a splashy move for either team but benefits both sides. Utah offloads Weber's contract to clear cap space while also acquiring future draft capital. With this move, Utah will have approximately $22 million in cap space this offseason to pursue additional talent.
Meanwhile, Chicago takes on Weber's contract to get a head start on reaching the cap floor for next season while also acquiring the rights to developing players. With the Blackhawks in the midst of a rebuild, moves like this benefit the team.
Bill Armstrong on the deal: 'A little bit of housekeeping on our end. I think it helps us be able to accumulate some cap space next year and tied up a few loose ends too.''We were able get that done & get that accomplished now instead of waiting till the draft.' https://t.co/fcvM4me4qr

Utah HC has become the latest team to make a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks, joining the Florida Panthers and Detroit Red Wings.
The Panthers acquired defenseman Seth Jones from Chicago just days after he criticized the team's effort in a 2-1 loss to Utah. Florida also received a 2026 fourth-round pick from Chicago in exchange for a 2026 first-round pick and goaltender Spencer Knight.
Meanwhile, just hours before Utah's trade with Chicago, the Blackhawks sent goaltender Petr Mrazek and forward Craig Smith to the Red Wings in exchange for Joe Veleno.
The trade comes as the only move Utah HC made ahead of the deadline, instead choosing to focus on extending players like Karel Vejmelka, Alexander Kerfoot, Ian Cole and Olli Määttä.
Utah is set to face the Blackhawks Friday at 6:30 p.m. MST.

Cubs get clobbered by Mariners for 3rd loss in 4 games
Donovan Solano homered twice and drove in five runs, helping the Seattle Mariners outslug the Chicago Cubs for a 14-6 victory on Sunday. Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 31st homer for Seattle on a hot and windy afternoon at Wrigley Field. Dominic Canzone went deep twice as the Mariners won the rubber game of a weekend set that featured a total of 21 homers for the two teams. Raleigh connected in the first inning against Colin Rea (4-3). The two-run drive to center field was his fourth homer of the series. Seiya Suzuki homered twice and drove in three runs for the Cubs in their third loss in four games. Kyle Tucker and Reese McGuire also went deep for the NL Central leaders. Chicago trimmed Seattle's lead to 5-4 when Suzuki hit a two-run shot off Logan Gilbert (2-2) with two down in the fifth. It was Suzuki's 20th homer of the season. Seattle responded with two runs in the sixth. Canzone hit his second solo homer of the day, and Julio Rodríguez added a run-scoring groundout. Solano made it 9-4 with a two-run shot off Chris Flexen in the seventh. Solano went 9 for 14 in the series with eight RBIs. Key moment Seattle put away the game with five runs in the eighth against Nate Pearson. Randy Arozarena hit a two-run double and Solano capped the scoring with a two-run single. Cubs trade proposal lands Zac Gallen from Diamondbacks
The post Cubs trade proposal lands Zac Gallen from Diamondbacks appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Chicago Cubs were 44-28 before Tuesday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs have held a sizable lead in the National League Central division for most of the season after a hot start to the season. Advertisement With the trade deadline looming, Chicago is under pressure to make significant upgrades as they look to contend. The Arizona Diamondbacks have come up as the premier trade partner for the Cubs. The latest rumors say that they have interest in bringing in Zac Gallen to anchor their starting rotation. Arizona's trade deadline plans are still unknown, but the team has been near the bottom of the NL West for most of the season. Multiple Diamondbacks have been put into hypothetical trades, especially Josh Naylor. The front office is still deciding whether or not to move on from their expiring contracts or add pieces to try and contend. The Cubs, for one, hope they choose to focus on the future. Their starting rotation is the one real weakness on the roster. Losing Justin Steele to a season-ending injury hurts, but Shota Imanaga is close to his return from Chicago's injured list. Adding Gallen would give them another capable starter. The trade targets for the Cubs are easy to identify. However, Gallen is on an expiring deal, making his value tough to gauge. Advertisement If Chicago were to trade for the 29-year-old, he would come in as a half-season rental. However, if the Cubs go on a deep postseason run, they could sign him to a long-term contract this winter. Chicago has the expendable players to offer the Diamondbacks an attractive package, featuring two players that could help them both now and later. We came up with a hypothetical deal for both sides. Diamondbacks receive: C Miguel Amaya, 1B/OF/3B Jonathan Long Cubs receive: SP Zac Gallen Why should the Cubs make this deal? The Cubs' offense is among the best in Major League Baseball. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker give Chicago two legitimate MVP candidates. Those two, along with Seiya Suzuki, are one of the most feared string of hitters the league has to offer. Advertisement While their offense has been great, their pitching leaves a lot to be desired. Steele's injury forced Matthew Boyd and Jameson Taillon to step up. Imanaga's issues has robbed Chicago of one of the best pitchers in the league this season. Without him, the Cubs' ERA skyrockets. Gallen's numbers aren't attractive, but he is capable of turning things around in a big way. He won at least 12 games in each of the last three seasons, earning All-Star honors in 2023. A change of scenery could be all Gallen needs to recapture his dominant form. If a transition to Wrigley Field unlocks his potential, he gives Craig Counsell two capable pitchers he can start in Game 1 of a playoff series. At this point in the season, every move Chicago makes is made with a championship in mind. Miguel Amaya made waves when he joined the Cubs in 2023. His numbers have slowly improved in each year since, but he still sits behind Carson Kelly on Counsell's depth chart. Long, on the other hand, is still in Triple-A Iowa, batting .323 in 64 games. Advertisement Kelly is playing too well this season for Amaya to get consistent plate appearances. At this point, he and Chicago's prospects mean more to the Cubs as trade chips as contributors in the major leagues. Why should the Diamondbacks make this deal? The Diamondbacks' rotation was elite heading into the season. However, a season-ending injury for Corbin Burnes robbed Arizona of their offseason addition. The inconsistency on the mound has severely held them back all season long. Gallen's performance this season has underwhelmed. After serving as the Diamondbacks' ace over the last two seasons, the seven-year pro has an ERA of 5.19 to go with a 4-8 record before his next start on Friday. Advertisement His play this season and his expiring contract makes him an interesting player to watch over the next month. If the Cubs win big this postseason, they could convince him to stay at a number that works. However, Chicago has enough on their plate with Pete Crow-Armstrong's extension talks. Amaya probably won't start behind the plate, but he and Gabriel Moreno could split duties at catcher and DH. Long, on the other hand, could see time in the outfield in the second half of the season. The Diamondbacks made it to the World Series in 2023. This year, Arizona has struggled mightily in a much-improved division. The decision on whether or not to trade Gallen comes down to what their long-term plans are. Bringing in Amaya and Long gives them options moving forward. Gallen's contract makes him a player to watch for every contender that needs another starter this season. Sammy Sosa, Pete Crow-Armstrong picture goes viral in Sosa's return to Wrigley Field
The post Sammy Sosa, Pete Crow-Armstrong picture goes viral in Sosa's return to Wrigley Field appeared first on ClutchPoints. Sammy Sosa made his long-awaited return to Wrigley Field on Friday. The former fan favorite had been exiled by the Chicago Cubs after parting on bad terms with the team 21 years ago. Now the team's all-time home run leader was welcomed back to his old stomping grounds. And he caught up with current fan favorite Pete Crow-Armstrong for a photo op. Advertisement Sosa and PCA posed together for a photo to commemorate the retired slugger's visit, per Talkin' Baseball on X. And the pic spread like wildfire. Crow-Armstrong was just two years old when Sosa last took the field for the Cubs back in 2004. Sosa had been a wildly popular player during his 13-year run with Chicago. He hit 545 of his 609 career home runs with the team. And Sosa is the only player in the history of baseball to hit 60 home runs in three different seasons, all with the Cubs. Most famously, Sosa hit 66 home runs in 1998 while competing with Mark McGwire for the single-season home run record. McGwire edged him out, finishing the campaign with a then-record 70 homers. However, Sosa led the majors in RBI (158), runs scored (134) and total bases (416), winning National League MVP. Pete Crow-Armstrong met former Cubs great Sammy Sosa Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Despite his immense popularity in Chicago, Sosa's relationship with the Cubs soured amid PED accusations. While he denied using steroids, the allegations persisted and the team cut ties with Sosa, trading him to the Orioles following the 2004 season. Advertisement Sosa attempted to repair his relationship with the Cubs, releasing a statement aimed at a reconciliation late last year. Apparently, it worked as the team welcomed him back to Wrigley Field where he had the opportunity to meet with the franchise's budding superstar, Crow-Armstrong. PCA is in the midst of a potentially historic season for the Cubs. In his second year with the team, Crow-Armstrong has displayed his rare combination of power and speed, putting him on pace to join the 40/40 club. Only six players in MLB history have hit 40 home runs and stolen 40 bases in a season. And Sosa isn't one of them. Speed was an element of the seven-time All-Star's game early in his career. But Sosa's base-stealing prowess had tapered off by the time power suddenly began dominating his game. However, Sosa did record two 30/30 seasons. Crow-Armstrong is already up to 20 home runs and 23 steals through 73 games this season. He continues to play at a level manager Craig Counsell has never seen from a center fielder, helping lead the Cubs to the best record in the National League.
