NHL Trade news: The Chicago Blackhawks send Victor Söderström to Boston Bruins for Ryan Mast and a draft pick
Trade news: The Chicago Blackhawks send Victor Söderström to Boston Bruins for Ryan Mast and a draft pick (Credit: X/@NHLBlackhawks) The offseason trade activity has begun, and the Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins were quick to connect on a development-focused deal. Chicago has traded the NHL rights to 24-year-old defenseman Victor Söderström to Boston. In return, the Blackhawks acquire 21-year-old defense prospect Ryan Mast and a seventh-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. NHL Trade news analysis as Boston Bruins add Victor Söderström for depth and upside By acquiring Söderström, the Bruins are making a calculated bet on a former first-rounder who has yet to cement his place in the NHL. But his recent performance overseas suggests the offensive potential is still intact. With the Bruins needing younger options on their back end and facing salary cap challenges, Söderström could offer low-cost upside if his SHL success can translate to the North American game. His skating and puck-moving skills fit well within Boston's evolving defensive system. The Bruins have demonstrated a pattern of acquiring players with untapped potential and providing them with new opportunities. Söderström fits that mold and enters a situation where he may finally get the NHL runway he needs. The Blackhawks remain focused on constructing a team around franchise centerpiece Connor Bedard and are prioritizing development over short-term fixes. Blackhawks trade defenseman Victor Söderström's rights to Bruins for prospect, pick
The Chicago Blackhawks have traded the rights of defenseman Victor Söderström to the Boston Bruins for defense prospect Ryan Mast and a 2025 seventh-round pick, the team announced Friday. 🔔we've got a Friday afternoon trade 📰 ➡︎ — Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) June 13, 2025 Söderström, 24, was selected No. 11 in 2019 by the Arizona Coyotes and played three-plus seasons in the Coyotes' organization, including 53 NHL games, before declining to re-sign as a restricted free agent and opting to return to his native Sweden to play in the SHL this past season. Söderström, a right-handed shot, produced nine goals and 28 assists in 49 games for Brynäs during the 2024-25 season and was named the league's top defenseman, winning the Börje Salming Trophy. Advertisement The Blackhawks acquired Söderström's rights from Utah along with Shea Weber's contract and Aatu Räty for a 2026 fifth-round pick on March 7. With the emergence of the Blackhawks' young defensemen, especially Sam Rinzel and Artyom Levshunov this past season, they weren't going to guarantee Söderström an NHL roster spot and block the path for their prospects next season. Söderström had bounced between the AHL and NHL with the Coyotes. The Bruins have a need at right defense after trading Brandon Carlo to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Charlie McAvoy and Andrew Peeke are their lone returners in 2025-26 on the right side. Mast, 22, was a Bruins' sixth-round pick in 2021. The right-shot, stay-at-home defenseman had zero goals and five assists in 37 games for the Providence Bruins in the AHL during the 2024-25 season. He has one year left on his entry-level contract. He is considered an NHL long shot.

Victor Soderstrom Wins Borje Salming Trophy As SHL's Top Defenseman

As a result, he has been awarded the Börje Salming Trophy. In 2019, he was picked 11th overall in the NHL Entry Draft by the Arizona Coyotes but, just five years later, he signed a two-year deal to play with his hometown team, Brynäs Gävle, which has just been promoted back to the SHL. He went on to have a spectacular season, recording 37 points in 49 regular-season games as Brynäs surprisingly finished first. Advertisement 'I definitely don't regret a thing,' Söderström is quoted on the club's website. 'It's a slightly different path to take because I'm still young and my goal is still very much to make it in the NHL.' That might happen next season as Söderström, now 24, was traded from Utah HC to the Chicago Blackhawks on the NHL trade deadline, and he indicated at the time that he had been seeking to get his NHL rights moved. Victor Soderstrom Might Return To NHL After Rights Traded To Chicago: 'We've Been Trying To Arrange It All Season' Victor Soderstrom Might Return To NHL After Rights Traded To Chicago: 'We've Been Trying To Arrange It All Season' Victor Söderström didn't want to give up on the NHL so early, but it seems that he didn't see a path to that dream running through Salt Lake City. Playing this season for Brynäs IF in the SHL, he learned on Friday – the NHL trade deadline – that his NHL rights had been traded from Utah HC to the Chicago Blackhawks along with the rights to Shea Weber – who hasn't played since 2021 and is essentially retired – in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick. Advertisement But first things first, as Brynäs has a semifinal series coming up against Skellefteå AIK starting on Friday. Skellefteå's lineup includes Axel Sandin-Pellikka and Jonathan Pudas, the two previous winners of the award. 'I love coming to the rink every day,' Söderström continued. 'The fact that the pairing with Charles-Édouard D'Astous has worked so well has of course also meant a lot.' D'Astous, a 26-year-old Canadian who was the top defenseman in the Finnish Liiga last season, outscored Söderström by two points this year and has also apparently drawn interest from NHL teams. According to the Brynäs website the jury for the award described Soderstrom as: An elegant player on the ice who has been one of the biggest contributors to newcomer Bynäs' record-breaking season in the SHL. Extremely skilled, and also a top-notch point-scorer as a defenseman. Has formed the league's best defenseman pair during the season with Charles-Édouard D'Astous. Salming died in 2022 from complications related to ALS. Börje's older brother Stig Salming was present when Söderström received the Salming Trophy. Both Salming brothers were also Brynäs defensemen. 'Börje would have liked this,' Stig Salming was quoted. Utah Hockey Club Makes Trade With Blackhawks Ahead of Matchup
Just ahead of tonights matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks, Utah HC has made a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks. Utah acquire a 2026 5th-round pick in exchange for Victor Söderström, Aku Räty and Shea Weber. None of the three players are currently on Utah's active roster, with Söderström playing for Brynäs IF in the Swedish Hockey League, Räty playing in the AHL, and Weber having retired at the end of the 2020-21 season before being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame last year. For clarity, the Weber contract carries a $7.85 million cap hit, but the actual money the team owes him is only $1 is a cheap way for Chicago to get to the cap floor next season. — Brogan Houston (@houston_brogan) March 7, 2025 The trade isn't a splashy move for either team but benefits both sides. Utah offloads Weber's contract to clear cap space while also acquiring future draft capital. With this move, Utah will have approximately $22 million in cap space this offseason to pursue additional talent. Meanwhile, Chicago takes on Weber's contract to get a head start on reaching the cap floor for next season while also acquiring the rights to developing players. With the Blackhawks in the midst of a rebuild, moves like this benefit the team. Bill Armstrong on the deal: 'A little bit of housekeeping on our end. I think it helps us be able to accumulate some cap space next year and tied up a few loose ends too.''We were able get that done & get that accomplished now instead of waiting till the draft.' — Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) March 7, 2025 Utah HC has become the latest team to make a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks, joining the Florida Panthers and Detroit Red Wings. The Panthers acquired defenseman Seth Jones from Chicago just days after he criticized the team's effort in a 2-1 loss to Utah. Florida also received a 2026 fourth-round pick from Chicago in exchange for a 2026 first-round pick and goaltender Spencer Knight. Meanwhile, just hours before Utah's trade with Chicago, the Blackhawks sent goaltender Petr Mrazek and forward Craig Smith to the Red Wings in exchange for Joe Veleno. The trade comes as the only move Utah HC made ahead of the deadline, instead choosing to focus on extending players like Karel Vejmelka, Alexander Kerfoot, Ian Cole and Olli Määttä. Utah is set to face the Blackhawks Friday at 6:30 p.m. MST.
