ST. JOHN'S, NL, May 27, 2025 /CNW/ - TxtSquad, an AI-powered patient engagement platform, is expanding its impact through a new partnership with the Coordinated Accessible National (CAN) Health Network to modernize communication between healthcare providers and patients.
As part of this initiative, TxtSquad is launching a pilot with NL Health Services in its bariatric surgery unit to explore how improved messaging and virtual care tools can enhance post-operative care and patient outcomes.
"Our mission is simple - improve healthcare accessibility," said Josh Taylor, CEO of TxtSquad.
"We make it easy for patients to reach their care teams—whether by secure text, voice, or video—without hold music, phone tag, or app downloads."
"This kind of access doesn't just improve the patient experience—it also frees up time for healthcare staff and improves outcomes," said Taylor.
This new initiative builds on momentum from a successful pilot in 10 community care clinics across Newfoundland and Labrador, where TxtSquad reduced no-show rates by up to 80%, increased patient satisfaction, and significantly cut call volumes.
TxtSquad's platform integrates with existing phone systems to offer secure two-way texting, phone wraparounds like call queues and voicemail, and AI agents for scheduling, reminders, follow-ups, and quality assurance.

I'm an Economist: 4 Questions To Ask About Tariffs (and 2 Not To Worry About)

President Trump's tariffs has been dominating headlines for months now, prompting concerns about how they may affect everything from grocery bills to investment accounts. While it's tempting to react to every trade policy shift, not all impacts are immediate or relevant to everyday consumers. Trending Now: Try This: Here's a quick breakdown on Trump's tariffs, why they have been implemented, and what everyone knows so far: Tariffs are taxes charged on imported goods. For example, a 10% tariff means a $10 product would have a $1 tax on top, which would make your total $11. President Trump has doubled U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50%. There is a 25% tax on imports from both Canada and Mexico and a 10% levy on Canadian energy. Though there has been a lot of back and forth as to the amount, the current tariff on goods from China is 20%. The White House also implemented a 20% tariff on most European Union goods, but halved it to 10% until July 8, 2025, to allow time for trade talks. Trump is mandating that most countries have a 10% 'baseline' tariff on all goods sent to the U.S. GOBankingRates spoke with Jared Ashworth, Ph.D., assistant professor of economics at Pepperdine Graziadio Business School, to determine the four questions you should be asking about tariffs — and the two things you shouldn't worry about. Most consumers don't need to follow every twist in trade policy. However, they do need to understand how tariffs might affect their wallets, savings and investments. Here are four practical financial questions worth asking right now. Uncertainty is the biggest concern about the tariffs. 'In recent months, there have been significant swings in what the actual tariffs will be,' Ashworth said. 'Many of these tariffs could also be rolled back if, for example, a target country changes its trade policy.' This has caused a lot of uncertainty. 'As a result, financial markets have become much more uncertain. Standard advice about risk and uncertainty, like considering your risk aversion or how close you are to retirement, matters even more in this context,' Ashworth said. Many retailers have already or will likely adjust their prices quickly in anticipation of the tariffs. According to Wired, the price of refrigerator staples like apple juice is already increasing, as most apple juice that Americans drink comes from China. Apple juice is just one of the many goods American consumers count on that will likely become more expensive due to the tariffs. 'The goal of tariffs is to allow domestic firms to charge higher prices and compete with the raised prices of international firms,' Ashworth said. Consumers are making big purchases in anticipation of the tariffs. For example, sales of cars and motor vehicles parts were up by 8.8% from last year, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. 'Most people won't be able to gain by making major changes based on broad news,' Ashworth said. 'For example, with cars, even though the vehicles currently on lots weren't directly affected by tariffs, the rush to buy before the tariffs take full effect has driven up prices.' According to USA Today, the manufacturing, construction, transportation, warehousing, retail and supply chain sectors are most likely to be affected by tariffs and are paring back on hiring. Ashworth said individuals should consider shifting investments to companies less affected by tariffs, even though the market expectations are already reflected in stock prices. Healthcare and financial services are among the sectors that are still poised to grow or remain stable, per USA Today. Tariffs can feel like a threat to every part of one's financial life, but not all impacts are immediate or personal. Here's what to set aside for now. The uncertainty about the impact of the tariffs also means that it's hard to know what will happen next or how long the effects will last. 'While the U.S. is part of a globally connected economy, imports and exports still make up a relatively small percentage of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product),' Ashworth said. 'The idea of a full-out trade war often depends on how it's framed, which is part of the problem.' For example, tariffs are viewed as either a measure that protects domestic industries or a policy that punishes countries engaging in unfair trade. 'But those goals can be contradictory,' Ashworth said. 'If tariffs are a punishment, then the once the country reforms its trade practices, we're expected to drop the tariffs, potentially ending the protection for domestic industries.' It's easy to feel powerless when trade policy shifts overnight. But for most consumers, the best response isn't control; it's adaptability. 'While tariffs can affect exchange rates and relative interest rates, most of those impacts aren't something everyday people can or should try to take advantage of,' Ashworth said. 'Unless you have direct influence over national policy, there's little you can do to change it. Instead, focus on staying flexible in this period of heightened uncertainty.' While there isn't much that can be done when it comes to government policy, consumers can take other actions to protect themselves and their finances. 'As with any pressure that raises prices, find ways to reduce consumption and spend less. While tariffs might contribute to a recession, individuals should still prioritize cutting back on spending and increasing savings,' Ashworth said. Cygnus Metals to raise $11.8m for Canadian copper-gold project

Cygnus Metals, a diversified critical minerals development company, has secured commitments to raise A$18.3m ($11.8m) through a share placement. The funds will be used to develop the Chibougamau copper-gold project in Canada. It will support exploration, resource growth and studies to advance the project's development. The funds will also provide general working capital and cover costs associated with the placement. The placement will proceed in two tranches, with the first tranche of 211.6 million shares raising A$18.2m and the second tranche, subject to shareholder approval, potentially adding A$100,000 through the issuance of 1.16 million shares to non-executive director Raymond Shorrocks or his nominees. The first tranche is expected to settle on 26 June 2025 and does not require shareholder approval. Cygnus Metals' recent drilling success at the Corner Bay deposit and the discovery of high-grade gold and copper at the new Golden Eye prospect within the Chibougamau copper-gold project in Quebec have set the stage for a resource update in the next quarter. Cygnus managing director David Southam said: 'We have been generating outstanding results at Chibougamau and the proceeds of this raising will enable us to unlock the value much faster." The company's pro-forma cash balance is forecasted to be approximately A$23.7m before placement costs, as of 30 June 2025. Southam added: 'There is clearly immense scope to grow and upgrade the project's resource on the back of Corner Bay and Golden Eye. Given this potential, we want to move as quickly as possible on the exploration front and advance our study work at the same time. 'This comes against a backdrop of increased M&A [mergers and acquisitions] activity in the copper space, which demonstrates that finding high-grade copper/gold projects with infrastructure in mining friendly jurisdictions are rare – we just happen to have one of the best.' In January, Cygnus Metals and Doré Copper Mining completed their merger, creating a dual-listed critical minerals company with two core assets – Doré's Chibougamau copper-gold project and Cygnus' James Bay lithium projects in Quebec. "Cygnus Metals to raise $11.8m for Canadian copper-gold project" was originally created and published by Mining Technology, a GlobalData owned brand. Canada's retail sales up in April, likely to post big drop in May

By Promit Mukherjee OTTAWA (Reuters) -Canada's retail sales were up in April on a monthly basis but were below estimates, data showed on Friday, as the momentum seen in the previous months when customers advanced purchases to beat the impact of tariffs continued. Retail sales in April grew by 0.3% to C$70.11 billion ($51.11 billion) from 0.8% observed in the month earlier, Statistics Canada said, adding sales grew in six of the nine subsectors. An advanced estimate of sales shows that the number is likely to contract by 1.1% in May. "Canadian consumers continued to spend in April, but a decline in the May advance estimate for retail sales provides another indication that the economy is heading for a stall in Q2," Andrew Grantham, senior economist at CIBC Capital Markets wrote in a note. Retail sales are closely watched by economists and analysts as they give an indication of the trend of the GDP. They had been largely increasing in the previous months as uncertainty around the timing and magnitude of tariffs brought forward purchases. The sales have started showing signs of decline as tariffs have come into effect and analysts expect that they are likely to go down in the coming months. Feedback from respondents for April highlighted the effects of trade tensions between Canada and the United States on Canadian retail businesses, the statistics agency said. "Despite six of nine subsectors posting monthly gains in retail sales, all nine subsectors saw a negative impact on sales," it said. Analysts polled by Reuters had estimated the April sales to increase by 0.5% on a monthly basis and 0.2% excluding automotive and parts sales. StatsCan reported that excluding automotive and parts sales, the number shrank by 0.3% from a drop of 0.8% in March. The biggest jump in sales in April came from sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers, registering a growth of 1.9%, and was led by sales at new car dealers and used car dealers. This is the biggest category of sales and contributes over a quarter of total retail sales. The biggest drop in sales came from gasoline stations and fuel vendors which shrank by 2.7% and were closely followed by sales at retailers selling clothing and accessories posting a drop of 2.2%. In volume terms, retail sales increased 0.5% in April. ($1 = 1.3718 Canadian dollars) Inicia sesión para acceder a tu portafolio
