Opposition Politician Sentenced in Latest Blow to Tunisian Democracy
Free Destourian Party opposition leader Abir Moussi was recently sentenced to two years in prison, delivering the latest blow to Tunisian democracy. She was accused of criticizing the legislative process, and 'attempting to change the form of government, inciting violence attacking with the aim of provoking disorder.'
This decision was made by presidential decree during under President Kais Saied.
Tunisia had become a regional beacon of hope after the nation had become a democracy following a peaceful revolution which overthrew the dictator, Zine El Ben Ali.
Afterwards, the country went through the process of formulating a new constitution – the start of a reform process that won the Nobel Prize.
However, Saied, since coming to power in 2019, has been undermining the country's democracy. In 2022 Saied abolished the national parliament and started running the country by decree.
He has also rewritten the constitution to take more direct power for himself. During the 2024 elections Saied arrested several opposition figures, winning the election virtually unopposed .
In April, Saied arrested several members of the opposition in a crackdown on freedom of speech. This included the arrests of the leaders of the opposition party the National Salvation Front Issam Chebbi and Jawhar Ben Mbarek as well as several members of the nation's Islamist party Ennahada.
This was all done due to a new law Decree 54, which has been used to restrict so-called 'false language.' Under this decree there have also been several arrests of journalists, bloggers and everyday citizens.
Opposition figures were imprisoned in sentences of up to 4-74 years after trials which have been named by Amnesty International as 'farcical.'
Moussi's arrest came after she had tried to submit appeals against presidential decrees which were used ahead of 2024 elections to control the country's democracy. Her arrest now joins a large number that is all part of the Tunisia experiencing a massive democratic backsliding, leaving the state of the nation's future into question. Israeli strikes on Iran spark outcry among anti-normalization voices in Morocco
Overnight from Thursday to Friday, the Israeli military launched airstrikes on targets in Iran. In Morocco, critics of the normalization of ties with Israel, officially reestablished on December 10, 2020, have strongly condemned the attack. The Justice and Development Party (PJD) denounced the strikes as a «Zionist terrorist aggression against the Iranian people» and a «violation of Iran's territory and sovereignty». In a statement signed Friday by its Political Circle, the group said: «The Zionist entity's aggressive attack on Iran (...) represents a serious escalation and a clear violation of international law and national sovereignty». It warned of the repercussions for regional and global security. The National Action Group for Palestine echoed the criticism, calling the strikes «an act of aggression against Iran and its people». It held the United States and NATO «directly responsible, as the main sponsor and instigator of the Zionist entity». The Moroccan Front for Support of Palestine and Against Normalization went further, describing the attack as «a treacherous Zionist aggression carried out with direct American support». The group said it was part of a broader effort to suppress sovereign nations that seek progress and technology, even for peaceful purposes. Morocco cut diplomatic ties with Iran on May 1, 2018, under a PJD-led government, accusing Tehran—via Hezbollah—of arming the Polisario.

Is Algeria using Polisario Front members to shield Kaïs Saïed's regime ?
The Polisario Front was recently the subject of a phone conversation between Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his Tunisian counterpart Kaïs Saïed, held during Eid al-Adha. In this exchange, Tebboune reportedly asked Saïed «to host certain personalities from the Polisario Front currently living in the Tindouf camps», according to the weekly Jeune Afrique. Several leaks further suggest the presence of Polisario officials in Tunisia. Since Saïed's ascent to power on July 25, 2021, Tunisia has notably abandoned its long-standing neutral stance on the Western Sahara issue, a position maintained since the era of Habib Bourguiba. This policy shift was underscored by Saïed's reception of Brahim Ghali, the Polisario leader, at Tunis airport during a Japan-Africa summit in August 2022, as well as Tunisia's abstention during a UN Security Council resolution vote on the Sahara in October 2022. In apparent reciprocity, Algeria has provided significant financial support to Tunisia through loans and donations, particularly in December 2022 and March 2023. The Algerian company Sonelgaz also contributes to supporting its Tunisian ally by supplying electricity and gas. Ensuring the Longevity of the Saïed Regime A Moroccan source, speaking to Yabiladi, confirmed Jeune Afrique's information regarding Tebboune's request, stating that «for the past two or three months, dozens of Polisario members have entered Tunisia with Algerian passports». Our source elaborated, «Their mission is to protect the Tunisian regime against a potential revolution or coup, especially as protests against Saïed's decisions are gaining momentum, threatening the regime's stability. Algeria does not want to lose another ally in the region, especially after the fall of Bashar Al-Assad in Syria and the retreat of the national unity government forces in Libya in the face of Khalifa Haftar's advance». The source emphasized the strategic importance for Algeria: «Saïed's regime is Algeria's last declared ally in North Africa and the Sahel. Mauritania, for its part, has distanced itself from Algerian projects and has decided to put an end to the Polisario's border violations. In this context, the survival of the Tunisian regime is crucial for Algeria, as protests against Saïed multiply». It is worth noting that the majority of senior Polisario officials hold Spanish or Mauritanian nationality. As a historical reminder, Polisario elements, with Algeria's support, have previously fought alongside the armies of Muammar Gaddafi and Bashar Al-Assad. However, these reinforcements did not prevent the eventual fall of those regimes.
