Israeli strikes on Iran spark outcry among anti-normalization voices in Morocco

Ya Biladi7 days ago

Overnight from Thursday to Friday, the Israeli military launched airstrikes on targets in Iran. In Morocco, critics of the normalization of ties with Israel, officially reestablished on December 10, 2020, have strongly condemned the attack.
The Justice and Development Party (PJD) denounced the strikes as a «Zionist terrorist aggression against the Iranian people» and a «violation of Iran's territory and sovereignty». In a statement released Friday, June 13, the party said that «the targeting of infrastructure and the assassination of Iranian leaders» constituted a «blatant breach of international laws and conventions, met with shameful international silence and the full complicity of the United States».
The PJD added that Israel acts as «a rogue state» that respects neither sovereignty nor international law, and disregards UN charters and institutions. Notably, on November 23, 2024, party leader Abdelilah Benkirane praised «the axis of resistance», including Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and Iran—as the only bloc actively supporting the Palestinian cause.

The Islamist group Al Adl wal Ihsane also raised concerns. In a statement signed Friday by its Political Circle, the group said: «The Zionist entity's aggressive attack on Iran (...) represents a serious escalation and a clear violation of international law and national sovereignty». It warned of the repercussions for regional and global security.
The National Action Group for Palestine echoed the criticism, calling the strikes «an act of aggression against Iran and its people». It held the United States and NATO «directly responsible, as the main sponsor and instigator of the Zionist entity».
The Moroccan Front for Support of Palestine and Against Normalization went further, describing the attack as «a treacherous Zionist aggression carried out with direct American support». The group said it was part of a broader effort to suppress sovereign nations that seek progress and technology, even for peaceful purposes.
Morocco cut diplomatic ties with Iran on May 1, 2018, under a PJD-led government, accusing Tehran—via Hezbollah—of arming the Polisario.

Europe Presses for Talks But Iran Demands End to Israeli Attacks First

Rabat – As Israel and Iran continue to exchange aerial attacks for the eighth day, European countries have urged Tehran to restart talks with the United States to find a solution to the ongoing nuclear standoff. However, Iran made it clear that it will not return to diplomacy until Israeli airstrikes stop. European foreign ministers met with Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Geneva on Friday. France's Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said Iran should begin negotiations 'without waiting' for Israel to halt its attacks. ' It is illusory and dangerous to want to impose a regime change from the outside. It is up to the people to decide their own destiny,' he added. Iran's Foreign Minister responded by saying his country is open to more talks with European countries but not while under attack. 'Iran is ready to consider diplomacy once again and once the aggression is stopped and the aggressor is held accountable for the crimes committed,' Araghchi said after the meeting. He confirmed Iran's willingness to meet again with France, Germany, Britain, and the European Union. Meanwhile, the conflict continues to escalate on the ground. Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir warned of a 'prolonged campaign' against Iran, calling it the most complex in Israel's history. At least 19 people were injured in Haifa after Iranian missiles struck the northern port city, damaging buildings and leaving one person in serious condition. Meanwhile in Iran, state television showed large protests in Tehran after Friday prayers. Demonstrators chanted against Israel. A 5.1-magnitude earthquake also struck northern Iran today near the city of Semnan, adding to the country's stress as Israeli strikes continued. At the United Nations, Israel's ambassador Danny Danon said, 'We will not stop' the attacks until Iran's nuclear threat is dismantled. Iran's ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, called on the Security Council to act and warned that the United States might join the conflict. Iraq also accused Israel of violating its airspace. According to Iraq's UN representative, 50 Israeli warplanes flew through Iraqi skies on their way to targets in Iran. Tags: EuropeIranIsraelnuclear

Casablanca Authorities Crack Down on Unauthorized Churches

Marrakech – Local authorities in Casablanca have taken action against the spread of unauthorized churches operating illegally in apartments and commercial spaces, Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit announced on Thursday. The minister's statement came in response to a written parliamentary question from Justice and Development Party (PJD) representative Abdessamad Haiker, who raised concerns about the proliferation of these informal worship spaces. 'Local authorities in Casablanca have implemented several measures, recognizing the need to balance protection of religious freedom with the risks that unlicensed places of worship pose to public order,' Laftit stated in his official response. Joint inspection committees have visited locations being used illegally in several neighborhoods, including Oulfa, Hay Hassani, Sidi Maarouf, and Sidi El Khadir. These teams have instructed occupants to comply with applicable legal requirements. Tenants were informed that these spaces 'are not intended for religious activities,' the minister said, noting that property owners were also contacted and asked to ensure their tenants adhere to rental contract terms. These communications with property owners have already resulted in the regularization of several locations previously used for such activities, according to the Interior Ministry. Additionally, authorities launched an awareness campaign targeting foreign Christian residents, warning them about the risks of practicing religious rituals in unsuitable spaces. The issue was thrust into the spotlight following reports on social media about underground spaces allegedly being used as unauthorized 'churches,' particularly in working-class neighborhoods. These reports created concern among local residents. In his parliamentary question, Haiker expressed worry about the lack of clear information regarding these spaces. He questioned their legality and whether those operating them had obtained necessary permits. Such phenomena could 'spread anxiety and a lack of spiritual security among citizens,' the PJD representative warned, calling on the relevant ministries to disclose planned measures to address these issues and ensure compliance with laws governing religious practices in Morocco. The phenomenon of unlicensed churches has become widespread in the Hay Hassani area, according to converging reports. Local sources indicate that property owners have been renting their premises to individuals from sub-Saharan African countries, who convert them into primary locations for religious practices without proper authorization. The ministry confirmed that additional inspections will be conducted in the coming weeks, while continuing dialogue and awareness efforts with the affected communities. Some reports suggest that several of these 'informal churches' are located in basements or discreet premises, sometimes set up in precarious conditions. Israel Places Occupied West Bank Under Siege Amid Escalations with Iran

Rabat — As Israel escalates its war with Iran—initiated by Israel last Friday—the occupying regime has imposed a harsh lockdown on the West Bank. Entrances to Palestinian cities and villages are sealed off with iron gates and concrete barriers, trapping communities under siege. Beyond these closures, Israel has drastically restricted Palestinian movement through an intensified network of checkpoints, severely limiting entry and exit across large swaths of the territory. Palestinian sources confirm a surge in Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) presence in key West Bank cities including el-Bireh and Ramallah, while stringent checkpoints cripple movement in Nablus, Hebron, Qalqilya, and the Jordan Valley. Farmers in these regions are unable to tend their land or transport produce, as Israeli-imposed barriers choke the local economy. 'The ongoing closures have paralyzed daily life across the West Bank, severely restricting mobility, cutting off access to essential services, and devastating economic activity,' reports the Palestinian News and Info Agency, Wafa. Local reports detail mounting violence across the West Bank as Palestinians approaching checkpoints have been met with live gunfire, stun grenades, and tear gas from the IOF. In one instance in the Tulkarem refugee camp alone, a 16-year-old was shot in the leg during these brutal crackdowns. Night raids have led to at least 15 arrests, as ambulances face deliberate obstruction preventing critical medical aid from reaching the wounded. 'Even with Israeli military permission, we are held at checkpoints for hours before passage,' explains Fayez Abdel Jabbar, an ambulance driver, to Al Jazeera. 'This morning, one woman waited three hours at a checkpoint. We now have to transfer patients between ambulances just to navigate these brutal restrictions.' These assaults are part of a broader pattern of intensified aggression against Palestinians in the West Bank since January. By mid-2025, more than 40,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced, the largest uprooting of indigenous people since the 1967 occupation began. Large-scale demolitions of homes and infrastructure continue unabated. Amnesty International reports an alarming spike in detentions, with over 1,000 Palestinians arrested since the start of the year—a clear tactic of oppression and intimidation by the IOF. Adding to their affliction of life under occupation, Palestinians are also caught in the crossfire of the Israel-Iran conflict, as the indigenous population in the West Bank bear the brunt without protection. Iranian missiles intercepted by Israel have left debris falling in Palestinian areas where no bomb shelters or safety measures exist, exposing civilians to grave danger under Israel's apartheid regime. 'Palestinians are trapped between Iranian projectiles and Israeli missile interceptions,' observes Al Jazeera's correspondent Nida Ibrahim. Meanwhile, footage circulating online shows Israeli settlers chanting the racist anti-Arab slogan, 'May your village burn,' as an Iranian missile struck Tamra near Haifa, killing four Palestinian citizens of Israel. Adding to this brutality, the IOF is forcibly occupying Palestinian homes—expelling families and converting residences into military outposts to shield themselves from Iran's retaliatory attacks–a blatant breach of international law that Israel has grown accustomed to doing without consequence.
