Israeli strikes on Iran spark outcry among anti-normalization voices in Morocco
Overnight from Thursday to Friday, the Israeli military launched airstrikes on targets in Iran. In Morocco, critics of the normalization of ties with Israel, officially reestablished on December 10, 2020, have strongly condemned the attack.
The Justice and Development Party (PJD) denounced the strikes as a «Zionist terrorist aggression against the Iranian people» and a «violation of Iran's territory and sovereignty». In a statement released Friday, June 13, the party said that «the targeting of infrastructure and the assassination of Iranian leaders» constituted a «blatant breach of international laws and conventions, met with shameful international silence and the full complicity of the United States».
The PJD added that Israel acts as «a rogue state» that respects neither sovereignty nor international law, and disregards UN charters and institutions. Notably, on November 23, 2024, party leader Abdelilah Benkirane praised «the axis of resistance», including Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and Iran—as the only bloc actively supporting the Palestinian cause.
Trump-Era Legacy Blamed
The Islamist group Al Adl wal Ihsane also raised concerns. In a statement signed Friday by its Political Circle, the group said: «The Zionist entity's aggressive attack on Iran (...) represents a serious escalation and a clear violation of international law and national sovereignty». It warned of the repercussions for regional and global security.
The National Action Group for Palestine echoed the criticism, calling the strikes «an act of aggression against Iran and its people». It held the United States and NATO «directly responsible, as the main sponsor and instigator of the Zionist entity».
The Moroccan Front for Support of Palestine and Against Normalization went further, describing the attack as «a treacherous Zionist aggression carried out with direct American support». The group said it was part of a broader effort to suppress sovereign nations that seek progress and technology, even for peaceful purposes.
Morocco cut diplomatic ties with Iran on May 1, 2018, under a PJD-led government, accusing Tehran—via Hezbollah—of arming the Polisario.

At least 19 people were injured in Haifa after Iranian missiles struck the northern port city, damaging buildings and leaving one person in serious condition. Meanwhile in Iran, state television showed large protests in Tehran after Friday prayers. Demonstrators chanted against Israel. A 5.1-magnitude earthquake also struck northern Iran today near the city of Semnan, adding to the country's stress as Israeli strikes continued. At the United Nations, Israel's ambassador Danny Danon said, 'We will not stop' the attacks until Iran's nuclear threat is dismantled. Iran's ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, called on the Security Council to act and warned that the United States might join the conflict. Iraq also accused Israel of violating its airspace.
