KUALA LUMPUR - The Sessions Court here today sentenced four men, including two police corporals, to 12 years in prison and five strokes of the cane for robbing a businessman of RM1.1 million in cash four years ago.
Judge Hamidah Mohamed Deril sentenced suspended Corporals Hasrol Irmey Abu Hasim, 36, and Muhammad Helmi Jamaluddin, 34, together with Amir Moktar, 47, and Mohd Ridhwan Azman, 39, after finding that the defence had failed to raise a reasonable doubt at the close of the case.
"In light of this, the court sentences all four accused to 12 years in prison and five strokes of the cane. The custodial sentence takes effect today,' said Hamidah.
Defence counsel Nur Azimul Azami Mohamad Nor requested a stay of execution pending an appeal against the conviction and sentence, but the judge instructed that a formal application be filed. The Sessions Court sentenced four men, including two police corporals, to 12 years in prison and five strokes of the cane for robbing a businessman of RM1.1 million in cash four years ago.
The trial began in July 2023, with 35 prosecution witnesses testifying, while all four accused took the stand during the defence stage.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Ikhwan Mohd Nasir appeared for the prosecution, while lawyers Nur Azimul Azami and Lim Yoi Ping represented all the accused.
The four men were accused of robbing a 26-year-old man of RM1.13 million in cash while armed with a firearm at a building car park along Jalan Chan Sow Lin at about 1.30 pm on Dec 14, 2021.
They were charged under Sections 395 and 397 of the Penal Code, which carry a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment and caning upon conviction. - BERNAMA

"The investment offered various packages with promises of lucrative returns and the victim was interested in participating, before downloading the stock investment application and on Dec 30 made the first transfer of RM9,999 and earning a profit of RM18,400," he said in a statement today. He said that following that his confidence grew in the investment, the victim then made 35 money transfers between Feb 17 and April 24 into seven bank accounts belonging to different companies involving a total of RM1,495,176. Hamzah said the man only realised he had been a victim of fraud after failing to withdraw profits on the investment application and was even asked to make an additional payment. For the second case, he said a 73-year-old elderly man who is a retired accountant at a factory had filed a police report at north-east police headquarters yesterday after also falling victim to an online investment scam involving a loss of RM855,001. "According to the victim, he saw an investment advertisement for cryptocurrency investments that offered high profits in a short period of time on Facebook in March and the elderly person clicked on the advertisement link before contacting the female suspect via the WhatsApp application," he said. Hamzah said the victim joined and downloaded the investment application before making 14 transactions to five bank accounts belonging to different companies from April 15 to June 11, but did not receive any profits.

Tok Singa, 3 other traditional healers jailed for assault causing lecturer's blindness
KOTA BARU: Four traditional medicine practitioners were sentenced to four years in jail by the Sessions Court here today for assaulting a lecturer and causing permanent blindness in his left eye in August 2021. Judge Mohd Zul Zaqikudin Zulkifli handed down the sentence to all four accused, including two known by their aliases, Wea Selamos, whose real name is Mohd Shamsul Izwan Midin, 37, and Tok Singa, whose real name is Muhammad Firdaus Mohd Adnan, 37. The other two accused are Idrees Ishak, 46, and Mohd Eric Mohd Ramli, 39. In his judgment, Mohd Zul Zaqikudin said the defence presented by all four was merely a denial. "As such, all the accused are found guilty and sentenced to three years' imprisonment, effective today," he said. According to the charge, they were accused of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to the victim, Ahmad Shahrill 'Ariff Zainol, 43, which led to permanent blindness in his left eye. The offence took place at a guesthouse on Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra here at about 4am on Aug 5, 2021. All the accused were charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of seven years and a possible fine upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli prosecuted while all four accused were represented by Mohd Azrul Hasyimi Mohamad. Earlier, Mohd Azrul Hasyimi applied for a stay of execution to file an appeal on behalf of his clients. The court allowed the application and increased the bail from RM3,000 to RM5,000 for each accused.

Unemployed man pleads not guilty to sexually assaulting 10-year-old boy
KOTA BARU: An unemployed man pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old boy on June 12. Che Asmizan Che Jaafar, 34, is charged with committing the offence in an empty container near the Lembah Sireh Bus Station here at 8am.
