Kate Spade died 7 years ago: What to know about the iconic fashion designer

Yahoo04-06-2025

Kate Spade, the designer who helped characterize 1990s fashion with her iconic handbags, died by suicide seven years ago this week.
Spade's death on June 5, 2018, stunned the fashion world, highlighting the silent struggles behind one of the industry's biggest names and, along with the death of Anthony Bourdain three days later, sparked a broader conversation about mental health amidst fame and success.
A two-time Council of Fashion Designers of America award winner, Spade left behind a brand that captivated young women in the '90s and early aughts that endures today.
Born Katherine Brosnahan in Kansas City, she co-founded her eponymous designer brand in 1993 with her future husband and business partner Andy Spade, the brother of comedian David Spade, in their New York City apartment.
Started with hand-taped prototypes, Kate Spade became a rapid success, expanding to shoes, luggage and other accessories. Spade relinquished any ownership of her brand in the mid-2000s, which would change hands a few times before landing at Tapestry, Inc., formerly Coach, Inc., after a $2.4 billion purchase in 2017.
Spade was found dead in her Upper East Side apartment in New York City. She was 55. Her cause of death was ruled suicide by hanging.
In a statement reported by media at the time, Andy Spade said his late wife had "suffered from depression and anxiety for many years" but "was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives."
Her death was followed by Anthony Bourdain's suicide three days later.
"There was no indication and no warning that she would do this. It was a complete shock," Andy Spade continued. "There were personal demons she was battling."
Kate Spade's best friend Elyce Arons, who is writing a memoir titled "We Might Just Make It After All" about their friendship, said the couple "were trying to work things out," she told People in an interview published June 3. The book is set for release on June 17 through Simon & Schuster.
Spade's daughter Frances Beatrice Valentine Spade was 13 at the time of her death. Police reported at the time that she left Frances, now 20, a note.
In 2016, Kate Spade turned to a new brand based around her daughter, the luxury footwear and handbag company Frances Valentine, with which she remained active until her death.

How Local Economic Development Act funds help New Mexico businesses grow

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – For years, state and city grant funding has been used to grow businesses in New Mexico with the goal of keeping jobs here and boosting the economy. One local business who has expanded over the years said it's all thanks to that local funding. Vitality Works, located in Albuquerque, makes dietary and herbal supplements. 'We are the guys that really make the stuff for over 600 brands in the United States. Our name is on nothing, but we make other people's goods and fully package turnkey operations,' said Vitality Works CEO/Founder Mitch Coven. Coven said since he started his company in the 1980's, it's far surpassed his goals. He said the growth wouldn't have been possible without money from grants and tax credits. 'Everything that the city, county, state has made available to us has helped foster our growth even faster,' added Coven. One of the grants he's received is through the Local Economic Development Act, or LEDA which was signed into New Mexico law in the early 90's to incentivize and support growing businesses. 'We want the public sector to be an enabling partner that allows those entrepreneurs and those companies to be successful,' said Director of Economic Development for the City of Albuquerque Max Gruner. Vitality Works is just one company that's benefited from LEDA in the metro. In just the past eight years, the city of Albuquerque has committed more than $13.7 million in LEDA funding to help grow and retain 15 businesses. Those who qualify are expected to show how their company will expand, create jobs and have a local economic impact. 'We are really trying to use the mechanism of these incentives to create generational wealth for our families in Albuquerque,' said Gruner. Vitality Works produces 50,000 bottles of supplements and more a day. Coven believes his company is a way to give back to New Mexico as he employs more than 300 people and he sources some herbs in the state. His company is receiving it's second LEDA funding, which he hopes to use to expand the company even further by adding another 30,000 square feet to his facility. 'Our plans are to keep capturing the growth. We have to keep expanding,' said Coven. State LEDA funds are appropriated by the legislature, while participating cities also have their own LEDA funds, which are controlled by city councils. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
