This underrated Steve Carell movie is one of my favorite coming-of-age comedies — and it's now on Prime Video
Steve Carell is known for big-budget comedies like "The 40 Year-Old Virgin," "Crazy, Stupid, Love." and the "Anchorman" franchise, but some of the actor's best work is in smaller-scale fare like "Little Miss Sunshine," "Dan in Real Life" and "The Way, Way Back".
In particular, that latter title — which sees an against-type performance from Carell as a nightmare stepfather — is a surefire summertime charmer, complete with a fantastic ensemble full of some of Hollywood's funniest people. And, best of all, it's currently available to stream on Prime Video.
Amazon's streaming service is stocked with great titles across all genres, including crowd-pleasing comedies, and "The Way, Way Back" is certainly no exception. The coming-of-age story serves up humor and heart in equal turns, and will instantly transport you back to those long, sunny days of youthful, no-school summer. Here's why you should add the sweet teen comedy to your Prime Video watch list.
Written and directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash in their directorial debuts, 2013's "The Way, Way Back" centers on Duncan (Liam James), an introverted 14-year-old on summer vacation in a New England beach town with his mother Pam (Toni Collete), her overbearing boyfriend Trent (Steve Carell) and Trent's daughter Steph (Zoe Levin).
Trent is quite hard on Duncan — the older man tells the teen to rate himself on a scale of one to ten and harshly dubs him a three — and, even worse, he's caught by the boy cheating on Pam with a friend's wife (Amanda Peet). To escape the messiness of it all, Duncan finds solace at the rundown local water park, Water Wizz, where he encounters a merry band of colorful employees (played by Maya Rudolph, Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, among others), all led by wisecracking but compassionate park manager Owen (Sam Rockwell).
Though Duncan's family is none the wiser about where he's spending his summer days, the teen is hired by Owen for odd jobs around the park and soon the wallflower opens up, even catching the attention of Susanna (AnnaSophia Robb), the pretty daughter of his neighbor Betty (a scene-stealing Allison Janney).
There's a sweet nostalgia that permeates "The Way, Way Back" — fittingly, the title refers to sitting in the third row of seats in old-school station wagons — and a youthful relatability to Duncan's story.

And along with a believably villainous turn from usual good-guy Steve Carell, the unexpected buddy duo of Sam Rockwell and Liam James is an especially delightful attribute. Both actors received Critics' Choice nominations for their performances, as did the comedy film as a whole.
Rockwell's warm and witty screen work, in particular, was lauded by critics: David Gritten at The Daily Telegraph wrote: "Rockwell seizes on this role and milks it for all it's worth." And for The Guardian, Catherine Shoard also showed love to Carell and Collette: "There's some terrific performances – particularly from Collette, putting flesh on some quite bare bones, and Carell, a wholly plausible, half-sympathetic overgrown jock with a bullying charm."
On Rotten Tomatoes, where the movie has an 83% approval rating, critical consensus reads: "Despite its familiar themes, 'The Way Way Back' makes use of its talented cast, finely tuned script, and an abundance of charm to deliver a funny and satisfying coming-of-age story."

Bill Skarsgård's ‘Nosferatu' Gets Prime Video Streaming Date

Skarsgård stars as the vampire Count Orlok in Nosferatu, while Depp plays Ellen Hutter, whom the vampire has been haunting in her dreams. Hoult plays Ellen's husband, Thomas Hutter, a real estate agent who is trying to thwart Orlok from preying on his wife. The film also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Simon McBurney, Ralph Ineson and Willem Dafoe. Prime Video has announced that Nosferatu will join its streaming video on demand lineup on Friday, June 27. Viewers who don't have Prime Video can get the streaming service as one of the benefits of being an Amazon Prime subscriber for $14.99 or $139 per year. Prime Video-only subscriptions are also available for $8.99 per month. According to streaming tracker When to Stream, only the theatrical version of Nosferatu will be available on Prime Video when the film makes its SVOD debut on the platform on Friday. The extended cut of Nosferatu, which includes four minutes of additional footage is only available on the Peacock streaming service. Robert Eggers Contacted Bill Skarsgård About 'Nosferatu' After Seeing Him In 'IT: Chapter Two' Nosferatu director Robert Eggers said it was because of another horror role — Pennywise the Clown— that led him to pursue Bill Skarsgård to play Count Orlok. However, it wasn't Skarsgård's portrayal as the clown that inspired Eggers. 'It was [Bill's role] as Pennywise, but in IT: Chapter Two, when he played Pennywise as a middle-aged human man instead of a clown,' Eggers said in a Zoom conversation prior to the film's theatrical release. 'It just had a kind of darkness and depth that I really believed. 'So, that's when I emailed or texted Bill and said, 'Let's talk about Orlok.' I really wanted to work with Bill since I met him almost 10 years ago,' the filmmaker added. 'I cast him in The Northman in a supporting role but because of COVID, it didn't happen. He was always on my mind.' Nosferatu received awards season recognition for films released in 2024, largely in the technical categories. The film earned nominations for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design for the 97th Academy Awards; and received nominations in the same four categories and a Best Original Score nomination from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards. Nosferatu begins streaming on Prime Video on Friday.

"I came across his profile on a dating app and instantly recognized him as Graham, the boy I'd gone to prom with at school back in 1998. We'd even shared a kiss on the night. 'Swiping right, we matched and started chatting, quickly hitting it off. 'When we were younger, things hadn't worked out because I'd taken a job to become a holiday rep, traveling the world. 'But now our paths had crossed again…' 'At the beginning of 2019, I went on a luxury trip with my mum to the Seychelles, where I wrote a desire statement about what I wanted my dream partner to be like. 'Desire statements are when you pick a date in the future and jot down everything that you want to have happened by then, describing what it looks like from that perspective. 'I'd written them before to help me achieve my business goals and they'd worked. I'd been single for the past two years after my previous relationship broke down and now, I felt ready to meet someone. 'As my mum read her book beside me, I scribbled away. 'It's June 2019 and my life has changed drastically. I've met a man, he's into fitness, tall and picks me up effortlessly. He's also a great communicator and calls me beautiful. 'Sipping my wine, I told Mum what I'd written.' "'I look forward to meeting him,' she grinned. 'Little did I know that just six weeks later, Graham would come into my life.' 'Back at home, I read over the desire statement that I'd stuck on my bathroom mirror. Gasping, I remembered that Graham had told me I was beautiful, just like I'd written. "Phoning Graham, I told him about my desire statement. "'It honestly describes you, but I wrote it before we met,' I explained. 'He was 6' 2", loved fitness and was great at communicating. Still, I didn't want to get carried away, especially as we were living in different countries. 'Graham flew out to visit me four weeks later and from there we started a long-distance relationship, relying on Zoom date nights to keep the spark alive. 'By the end of the year, I knew we had something special. 'When Graham flew out in February 2023, he took me out for a fancy dinner and popped the question. It was completely out of the blue and I was shocked, but obviously I said 'yes' immediately. 'In May 2024, Graham and I flew to the Seychelles to get married. Just the two of us, it was a super special day. "'I can't believe that this is where I wrote my desire statement just five years before,' I thought. 'The following month, we threw a big party in Scotland with our friends and family. 'I think the desire statement worked for me because I was truly honest with what I wanted. Sometimes you manifest something that you don't really want, so it doesn't end up happening. You also have to be very specific about what you desire. 'Graham now lives with me in Dubai and we've had a wonderful first year as husband and wife. We've found our groove and are building a beautiful life together. 'Desire statements are a good way to work out what exactly it is that you want in life, but you can't just write it and expect things to fall in your lap. You have to take action and be open to opportunities. 'Some things don't always happen exactly as you see them and others may take a little longer, but it's all working away in the universe. 'You just have to trust the process.'
