Ludhiana West bypoll: All arrangements in place for counting of votes, says DEO
'Counting of votes and postal ballots will commence at 7 am in the presence of election observers, candidates and their authorized representatives,' he said.
The bypoll to the Ludhiana West Assembly seat in Punjab earlier on Thursday recorded a voter turnout of 51.33 per cent.
Ludhiana Jun 21 (PTI) District Election Officer Himanshu Jain on Saturday said all arrangements are in place for the counting of votes for the Ludhiana West Assembly bypoll on June 23.
The district election officer (DEO) said that robust security measures, including the deployment of paramilitary forces, have been made at all counting centers.
Continuous monitoring will be ensured through closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance, he added.
Jain said the entry to the counting centers will be strictly regulated, allowing only candidates, their representatives, media personnel and authorized individuals with valid identity cards issued by the Election Commission.
There were a total of 14 candidates in the fray.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) fielded Sanjeev Arora (61), a Rajya Sabha member and a Ludhiana-based industrialist.
The Congress placed its bet on former minister and Punjab Congress working president Bharat Bhushan Ashu (51), who represented the seat twice between 2012 and 2017 before losing to Gurpreet Bassi Gogi by a margin of 7,512 votes in the 2022 assembly polls.
The BJP fielded Jiwan Gupta while Parupkar Singh Ghuman was the Shiromani Akali Dal's candidate.

Pahalgam Attack: Two held for hiding Pakistani terrorists
New Delhi: National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two men for allegedly harbouring terrorists who carried out the April 22 attack in Pahalgam that left 26 civilians dead and 16 others injured. Officials termed the arrests a "major breakthrough" and said the two individuals had disclosed the identities of three terrorists involved in the attack, confirming that the three are Pakistani nationals and part of the Pakistan-based group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The duo who allegedly provided shelter to the terrorists have been identified as Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar from Batkote, Pahalgam, and Bashir Ahmad Jothar of Hill Park, Pahalgam. "Parvaiz and Bashir had knowingly harboured the three armed terrorists at a seasonal dhok (hut) at Hill Park before the attack, as per NIA investigations," said one of the officials. The two men "provided food, shelter and logistical support to the terrorists, who had, on the fateful afternoon, selectively killed the tourists on the basis of their religious identity, making it one of the most gruesome terrorist attacks ever". The NIA arrested the duo under Section 19 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. Further investigations in the case are continuing, said officials. The April 22 attack triggered a military retaliation by India against " terror infrastructure " in Pakistan. The Centre said soon after the attack that it had been established that the attack was directed by Pakistan-based handlers and involved Pakistani terrorists who had crossed the Line of Control. Following the attack, India carried out strikes inside Pakistan at sites including the headquarters of the LeT and the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) at Muridke and Bahawalpur, respectively. The air strikes destroyed key terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan as well as training camps and launch pads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes were carried out under Operation Sindoor , which is continuing, according to the government, with more punitive action not ruled out.

Pro-ISI Lt Gen Zahirul Alam set to be Bangladesh's Dy NSA
New Delhi: The Md Yunus-led interim regime in Bangladesh could appoint Lt Gen Abu Tayub Md Zahirul Alam, infamous for his links with Pakistan's ISI and fanning anti-India sentiments, as the deputy national security adviser. Zahirul Alam is a batchmate from the Army of the regime's current home advisor Jahangir Alam and former PM Khaleda Zia's late brother Sayeed Iskandar, both known for their close links with Pakistan. Jahangir Alam was head of border guards when BNP was last in power during 2001-06. Zahirul Alam's close links with Islamabad is evident from the fact that he once gave Pakistan military officials access to Bangladesh's National Defence College. He once served as the commandant of the National Defence College and was later appointed as a member of board of trustees of Hamdard Laboratories, Bangladesh. Zahirul Alam has close links with Yunus and hails from Yunus' native place in Chittagong. This explains the move behind appointing him as the deputy NSA. ED may chargesheet Robert Vadra soon
New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is likely to file its final prosecution complaint (equivalent to chargesheet) in three money laundering cases allegedly involving businessman Robert Vadra within the next three months. Following these filings, the federal agency will push for court cognisance to kickstart trials against Vadra and co-accused, people in the know told ET. The ED's investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) will also lead to the confiscation of properties allegedly acquired with illicit funds in these cases. Vadra, also husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, in April this year was questioned in connection with a money laundering probe related to a land deal in Shikohpur, Haryana. Agency sources confirm his questioning in the Haryana land deal is complete. He has been summoned for questioning in a money laundering case linked to UK-based arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari and will soon face a final round of questioning in the Bikaner land deal case as well, people in the know told ET. Vadra has consistently denied the accusations, labelling them a political witch hunt and accusing the BJP of political vendetta. Live Events Haryana Land Deal The Haryana land deal case dates back to a 2018 FIR against then-Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Vadra, and real estate firms DLF and Onkareshwar Properties. It's alleged that in February 2008, Vadra's Skylight Hospitality, launched with ₹1 lakh capital, purchased 3.5 acres in Manesar-Shikohpur for ₹7.5 crore. The land's title was reportedly transferred to Vadra within 24 hours. A month later, the Hooda-led Haryana government allegedly permitted Skylight Hospitality to develop a housing project, significantly increasing the land's value. In June 2008, DLF reportedly agreed to buy the plot for ₹58 crore, allegedly resulting in substantial gains for Vadra. Bikaner Land Deal In the Bikaner land deal, Vadra is accused of making a 615% profit by purchasing 275 bighas for ₹72 lakh and selling it for a significantly higher amount. The ED questioned Vadra and his mother about this probe in 2019. An ET report from January 2020 indicated that the ED concluded Vadra and his company, M/s Skylight Hospitality, did not conduct proper due diligence in purchasing two land parcels in Bikaner, and cheques were issued to 'land owners' solely at the 'behest of' a company's representative. Sanjay Bhandari Link The third case is linked to alleged arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari. The ED's 2023 chargesheet claims Bhandari acquired a London property at 12 Bryanston Square in 2009 and renovated it "as per the directions of Robert Vadra, who provided the funds for the renovation." Vadra has denied any direct or indirect ownership of London property.
