Here's the No. 1 resume green flag, says CEO: It shows you're ‘really driven and really curious'
Priyanka Jain, co-founder and CEO of vaginal microbiome test and care company Evvy, is very involved in her company's hiring process. "Nothing is more important than who we hire," she told CNBC Make It at Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies Gala and Summit. "I interview every single person before we hire them." Evvy currently has 25 employees. Jain also looks at candidate resumes, and there's one section in particular that she believes can indicate some level of success at a startup like hers: the Interests section. An Interests section could give a sense of your passion and motivation. Listing outside of work activities like nonprofit volunteering shows that you are a person "who goes above and beyond just what your job title tells you to do," said Jain. And that's critical for a nascent company. Working at a startup "very much requires you to be feet on the ground, rolling up your sleeves, getting things done," she said. A person who's hungry to learn and do more fits right in. Career experts agree with this approach, even if you're not looking to work at a startup. "I love former athletes. I love people that do triathlons. I love parents," ex-Google recruiter and current podcaster and advisor Nolan Church previously told Make It. The Interests section helps show off "passion or creativity that makes you unique, that makes you who you are." If you feel like you don't have enough outside of work accomplishments or activities to include an Interests section, don't despair. Jain can pick up on passion for what you do in other ways, too. "I think people who are really driven and really curious tend to have some way that that is coming through" in their resume, she said, even if it's just through "a theme in the types of jobs" they do that proves they want to improve in that field. Make sure to include your accomplishments on the job and when you've had successes in the workplace. For Jain, the point is "people who are generally interested in their lives and interested in the world around them points to a curiosity that I think is really important to succeed at a startup," she said.

Digital payments for ads or software? Here's where TDS may surprise you
Freelancers, small business owners, and e-commerce sellers are increasingly relying on digital platforms for advertising, software, and sales. But these payments often come with tax obligations that many overlook, especially under India's Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) rules. Experts say a good starting point is identifying whether the payment is made to an Indian or foreign company. 'This is crucial, as domestic payments are governed by Sections 194C and 194J, while international ones fall under Section 195,' says Ankit Jain, partner at a chartered accountancy firm, Ved Jain and Associates. Domestic versus foreign payments: Know your provider For payments to Indian providers, such as digital ad agencies or cloud service resellers: Section 194C applies to ad contracts; TDS at 2 per cent if the annual payment exceeds Rs 30,000. Section 194J applies to professional or technical services like AWS or Zoom; TDS at 10 per cent. Exemption: 'TDS isn't required if you aren't under tax audit or are a non-corporate entity,' notes Jain. For foreign providers, such as Google, Meta, or SaaS platforms: TDS under Section 195 applies, but rates vary depending on the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA). You must also file Form 15CA/CB, even if TDS isn't deducted; failure attracts a penalty of Rs 1 lakh. Common mistakes to avoid According to Ritika Nayyar, partner at a law firm, Singhania & Co., many taxpayers: Wrongly assume no TDS is needed if the provider is foreign. Skip filing Form 15CA/CB if no TDS is deducted. Misapply DTAA benefits without obtaining a Tax Residency Certificate. Ignore changes in TDS law or documentation requirements. Selling online? Know your 1 per cent TDS rule Platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and Zomato deduct 1 per cent TDS on seller earnings under Section 194-O. 'This amount reflects in your Form 26AS and can be claimed as a credit while filing returns,' says Nayyar, adding that, 'Maintaining accurate sales and TDS records is key.' Can small users avoid TDS? Yes, in many cases. If your turnover is below Rs 1 crore (business) or Rs 50 lakh (profession), you're generally not liable to deduct TDS. Also, individuals or HUFs paying for personal use are exempt from TDS obligations. But for international payments, no basic exemption exists, warns Jain. 'All such cases must be evaluated carefully, especially when claiming DTAA benefits.'

Eric Dane's alleged girlfriend was ‘blindsided' by his red carpet debut with Janell Shirtcliff
Don't miss out on the headlines from Hook Ups & Break Ups. Followed categories will be added to My News. Eric Dane's alleged girlfriend, Priya Jain, was 'blindsided' by his red carpet debut with Janell Shirtcliff, Page Six has exclusively learned. 'They never broke up,' a source told Page Six on Thursday. The actor, 52, brought Shirtcliff to Wednesday's Los Angeles premiere of his new series, Countdown, with a source claiming to Entertainment Tonight that 'the two have been in an on-and-off relationship for over three years and care deeply for each other.' However, Page Six is told it was the first time Jain, 27, had ever heard of the director, 41. Our source said Jain, who has been photographed with Dane multiple times, met him last summer and that they became 'exclusive' in November 2024 — right before he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He announced his diagnosis in April. According to our source, Jain was 'devastated by the diagnosis' but stood by the Grey's Anatomy star's side. Interestingly, ET's source claimed that 'Eric asked Janell to be there for him during this time, and she wanted to show up for him.' It is understood told that since Jain and Dane met, she has spent almost every night at his house, where she has tons of clothes. The source added that the actress has even spent time with Dane's kids — daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13 — whom he shares with Rebecca Gayheart. Gayheart, 53, has since clarified that she and her on-again, off-again husband are 'staying a family' and remain the 'best of friends.' Not only did Jain and Dane get matching star tattoos late last year, but the Euphoria star also gave her a tattoo with an at-home tattoo gun shortly after, it was claimed. The source added that the last time they saw each other was this past weekend, while the last time they were photographed together was mid-May. Reps for Dane, Jain and Shirtcliff did not immediately respond to Page Six's requests for comment. Govt to up housing quota for minorities from 10% to 15%
Bengaluru: The Karnataka govt Thursday resolved to increase reservation in housing schemes for minorities from 10% to 15% in urban and rural Karnataka, a decision which BJP dubbed as one more instance of minority appeasement. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Law and parliamentary minister HK Patil explained the cabinet decision to increase the housing-scheme quota for minorities and said: "We considered the number of houseless families from the minorities, Sachar Committee report, other studies about the houseless families and also instructions from the Union govt." The minister said the 15% quota applies to Muslim, Christian and Jain communities. He clarified that there will be no quota for minorities in the schemes meant exclusively for SC/ST communities. "There was a discussion about the need to increase the housing quota for minorities in the session. The govt has taken this decision keeping social justice in mind. We need not respond to those who do politics in providing houses for poor people," said Patil. Soon after the cabinet meeting, deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar defended the govt decision saying the houses constructed by the housing department in urban areas are lying vacant, and people from minority communities have expressed willingness to move into these houses. "In some urban areas, 20% to 30% of the minority communities are poor. Therefore, a proposal has been made to increase their quota. So, we are increasing the housing allocation reservation for them from 10% to 15%," said Shivakumar. BJP state president BY Vijayendra said reservation on the basis of religion is unconstitutional and that Congress has converted welfare into a marketplace for vote-bank politics. He said this was the second such instance after the state govt passed the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (Amendment) Bill, 2025, to provide a 4% reservation for Muslims in govt civic contracts. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Union minister Prahlad Joshi alleged the cabinet decision was unconstitutional. "Siddaramaiah and his company decided to provide 4% reservation in contracts, which was an unprecedented move in the country. Now, they have decided to allocate a 15% reservation under housing schemes," said Joshi. Amit Malviya, in charge of BJP's National Information & Technology Dept, said, "There can be no reservation on the basis of religion — the Constitution is unambiguous on this. Yet, the Congress govt in Karnataka is hell-bent on pushing religious quotas to appease its vote bank. This isn't governance, it's dangerous social engineering." He further alleged that the Congress is determined to sow the seeds of division, polarise communities, and rip apart the social fabric of Karnataka — all for short-term political gains. ++++ Boxes Agriculture Minister to lobby with Centre on Mango compensation Law and parliamentary affairs minister HK Patil said the cabinet discussed the issue of mango farmers, particularly in Kolar and Bangalore Rural areas, and authorised agriculture minister N Chaluvarayaswamy and chief secretary Shalini Rajneesh to discuss with the Union agriculture minister to seek compensation for farmers. ++++ Cabinet at Nandi Hills on July 17 Law and parliamentary affairs minister HK Patil said the cabinet meeting scheduled to be held at Nandi Hills on Thursday was postponed due to pending proposals from a few departments for the region.
