Leighton Meester opens up about Michelle Trachtenberg's death for first time
Leighton Meester has spoken out over Gossip Girl co-star Michelle Trachtenberg's death for the first time.
The 39-year-old died at the end of February, after being found 'unconscious and unresponsive' by police in New York.
Her official cause of death was revealed last month as complications from diabetes mellitus.
Following the tragic news, many of the late actress' colleagues and close friends shared tributes on social media, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Sarah Michelle Gellar and Gossip Girl's Blake Lively and Ed Westwick.
In a new interview, Meester – who played Blair Waldorf opposite Trachtenberg's Georgia Sparks – described the loss as 'devastating'.
'It's devastating,' she told Flaunt Magazine. 'She was a wonderful, talented person, and everyone loved her. It's very, very sad for everyone who knew her.
'Now, I can see that [the show's legacy] continues – in some ways, even more so than back then – to live on, which is incredible.'
Gossip Girl originally ran for six seasons between 2007 and 2012, with Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, Taylor Momsen, Kelly Rutherford, Matthew Settle and Jessica Szohr also in the cast.
Trachtenberg became a firm fan favorite thanks to her role of a young socialite, who would regularly stir up trouble for her pals.
Unpacking the role in a 2009 interview, the late star revealed how much fun she had stepping into Georgina's villainous heels.
'It's kind of easy to be evil when you're saying evil things,' she told Seventeen Magazine. 'It's definitely a lot more fun than playing the good girl. I love the reaction you get.
'I never understood why some actors don't want to play villains or evil characters.'
Trachtenberg's Gossip Girl colleagues were among the first to publicly pay tribute after her death earlier this year.
'Everything she did, she did 200%,' Lively posted on Instagram.
'She laughed the fullest at someone's joke, she faced authority head on when she felt something was wrong, she cared deeply about her work, she was proud to be a part of this community and industry as painful as it could be sometimes, she was fiercely loyal to her friends and brave for those she loved, she was big and bold and distinctly herself.
'Time passes. You take for granted that you get the chance to see an old friend. To paraphrase, the real tragedies in life are the ones that blindside you on an idle Tuesday. Hold those you love and have loved dear. More Trending
'The world lost a deeply sensitive and good person in Michelle. May her work and her huge heart be remembered by those who were lucky enough to experience her fire.'
'So sad to hear of the passing of @MichelleTrachtenberg. Sending prayers,' Westwick said on his own page.
Crawford added: 'Michelle was one of a kind. I remember her coming on set for the first time and just absolutely owning it.
'She was a force of nature and just so so unapologetically funny and magnetic… remembering those years with a big smile. Just a terrible loss. Love you.'

Gossip Girl star reveals why they're scared to watch show amid Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni's legal battle
The CW teen drama Gossip Girl won the hearts of young adults across the nation when it premiered in 2007. It made stars out of its stunning cast, which included Blake Lively — who is now embroiled in a legal battle with Justin Baldoni — Chace Crawford, Penn Badgley, Ed Westwick, Taylor Momsen, and Leighton Meester. Now, the 39-year-old Chace is admitting that he's scared to sit down for a rewatch of the original Gossip Girl. 'I haven't really rewatched any of it,' he told People. 'I'd be terrified. It's a bit embarrassing.' While promoting his fashion line American Dream Clubhouse, he revealed that he worried digging into the show would dredge up bad memories of how he once dealt poorly with fame. 'As a young man, you take yourself too seriously. I think everything's so precious, and you want to be this Marlon Brando,' Chace explained. 'And I think there gets a point too in a show that's popular where you get your sense of identity and who you are kind of becomes wrapped up in not just that character or the character's popularity, but the show.' Now, 39-year-old Chace Crawford is looking back at his time on the series and he has revealed why he's scared to sit down for a re-watch; pictured in May Crawford reflected about rising to fame, 'Some actor quoted like, "Anyone who gets famous is an a**hole for two years in their own way." It can affect people in a really weird way. And it probably made me a bit more paranoid at the time.' The actor also acknowledged the continued cultural relevance of Gossip Girl, which spawned a short-lived reboot in 2021. 'In a way it's kind of become almost classic. It really was of its time, though. It was just before social media, a little bit ahead of its time in that regard. 'But in watching, it's very campy. I forget how kind of campy it was. It's kind of fun in that way,' he told the outlet. Chace explained, 'It's the music too. Before it aired, they gave me a copy of the pilot to my parents, and my mom and dad probably watched it 20 times. Those songs from the pilot are so ingrained.' Asked what wisdom he would share with his younger self, the star said: 'I would just kind of tell myself to have fun, relax, everything's going to be OK, and it's just not holding on too tightly to your career or what you want to do and just have fun with it because you can kind of take yourself [too] seriously.' Crawford's former Gossip Girl costar Blake Lively is currently wrapped up in a nasty court battle with her It Ends With Us costar and director Justin Baldoni. The two butted heads while filming the romantic drama last year, and things turned litigious in December when the actress sued the actor for alleged sexual harassment and engineering a retaliatory smear campaign. This week Lively suffered a setback in the case when a New York judge denied her attorneys' application for a protective order seeking to block her text messages with Taylor Swift from being entered as evidence. Baldoni's team has subpoenaed Lively for text messages, emails and any other messages between herself and the singer. The Jane The Virgin actor's lawyers will now be allowed to pore through the text trail, with all communications related to It Ends With Us set for scrutiny. Last December, Blake outlined work opportunities that she allegedly due to Baldoni in her explosive lawsuit against him. One of the missed work gigs listed was hosting the season 50 premiere of Saturday Night Live in September, which aired the month after the film was released. 'The effects on Ms. Lively's professional life were immediate and substantial,' said the suit. 'Given the ongoing nature of the campaign and the associated negative public sentiment, Ms. Lively did not believe she could proceed with public appearances or events without being forced to openly discuss what happened on set,' the filing stated.

EastEnders legend reveals emotional reaction to Zoe Slater's return
EastEnders favourite Jessie Wallace has revealed she cried upon learning that Michelle Ryan would be returning to the BBC soap. It's been a busy old week in Walford, with Zoe Slater making a grand return after 20 years away. It's something which Jessie has called for quite some time, and yet the two actresses didn't share any screen time in the last few episodes. Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) had reached out to Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) to tell him that a wayward Zoe had moved in with her, and was overspending on her credit card. Zoe fabricated texts from Spanish loansharks, implying that they were trying to hunt her down and hurt her. Just as Stace' and Alfie grappled with her lies, Kat burst into the flat and her estranged daughter hid in the bedroom. To evade being caught, she climbed out of the window and fled the area for Barcelona – with Alfie following, telling his wife that he was going to Australia to care for younger brother Spencer (Christopher Parker). The huge week has been covered in a feature-length behind the scenes video – which can be viewed on the EastEnders YouTube channel now – and shows Michelle heading back to Elstree Studios for her first day of filming. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video We see her in her dressing room, which has been marked 'Sienna' to keep her identity a secret, and chatting with new executive producer Ben Wadey about his vision. She also sits down with Jessie, who is clearly elated to be with her co-star. 'So, Michelle is back after 20 years' she begins. 'I've missed her tremendously, I've missed her, working with her, the whole Kat and Zoe thing, you know, going back to, 'You ain't my mother,' 'Yes I am'. 'And when I found out Michelle was coming back, I cried. And then when we met up, I cried because I've missed you.' Jessie then states that it felt like being reunited with a child, and it's obvious that theres a lot of love in the Slater clan, who first appeared in 2000. 'Michelle's gone off and done great things, and I've gone off and done other things, but I always come back because I love it here,' she continued. 'I feel like it's my home. And now Michelle's back it's like having my daughter back again.' Wednesday's instalment marked the last time we'll see Zoe – for now. Alfie has headed to Barcelona, hoping to track her movements using the credit card payments. In his departure scenes, he promised an oblivious Kat that he'd bring her the 'best present ever' home from 'Australia'. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers?
