Comic Book Writer Says Unfinished Wonder Woman Game Was 'Gorgeous And Expansive'
The sudden closure of Monolith Productions and the cancelation of its Wonder Woman game has left many scratching their heads. Could it really have been that far off from releasing? Was it really going to cost that much to take it the rest of the way over the finish line? Answers to those questions may come in time, but some of those who worked on the game said it was shaping up to be something special.
'The game was gorgeous and expansive,' comic book writer Gail Simone recently wrote of the unreleased action-adventure game first announced back in 2021. 'It was beautiful to look at. I am not going to give details for a number of reasons, but every effort was made to make this not just a great game, but a great WONDER WOMAN game. A showpiece epic.'
Simone is best known for her past runs on DC Comics Secret Six, Birds of Prey, Batgirl, and of course, Wonder Woman. She's currently writing the latest Uncanny X-Men reboot and says she was doing long-term consulting on Monolith's game, a dream come true in part because of how much she loved the studio's Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor games known for their groundbreaking nemesis system.
'Everyone who worked on it brought their a-game,' Simone continued. She said the team was also dedicated to making sure Wonder Woman was lore accurate in every way. 'I know there's a lot of finger-pointing going on, but everyone I worked with from Monolith and WB both was enthusiastic and supportive. Everyone wanted to make the best game ever. Sometimes, you give your all and it doesn't work out.'
One of the game's developers was similarly optimistic in the Monolith Discord. 'Don't listen to anything anyone's said about the project stalling or failing,' they wrote. 'It was going to be absolutely killer.' Bloomberg reported that the project underwent a reboot early last year, switched directors, and may have still be years away from shipping despite already costing $100 million.
'I know every dev will say this about something they worked on, but it was going to be amazing,' the developer told Monolith fans. 'I am not allowed to say much but I can at least say that every single person was pouring their heart into it and it showed. Our narrative team had a fantastic and deeply meaningful story. Especially in these really difficult times, I felt the world really needed the story we were telling.'

DC fans eager to revisit Themyscira, you're in luck, DC Studios is still developing its Paradise Lost series. The show is set on Wonder Woman's mythic island home, and in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn gave a small but welcome update on the project and how it fits into the broader DCU, especially when it comes to the newly revealed Wonder Woman movie. 'Paradise Lost is moving along. It's slow-moving, but it's moving. And, yeah, I really love that project a lot.' When asked whether the series is connected to the upcoming Wonder Woman film, Gunn got a little… well, Gunn-ish: 'Yes. Well, yes and no. Wonder Woman's a separate thing. We're working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's being written right now. So it's different. I mean, not different. They're connected. She's from f—ing Themyscira, so…' What we do know is that Paradise Lost is still coming, even if it won't feature Diana at all. It's meant to take place long before her birth and will explore the politics, power struggles, and mythology of Themyscira itself. Gunn has previously described the show as a kind of DCU-flavored Game of Thrones , a political fantasy thriller set in a paradise that isn't as peaceful as it looks. The show was originally announced in January 2023 as part of the first slate of the DCU reboot, and it's believed to take inspiration from the Paradise Island Lost comic arc by Phil Jimenez and George Pérez. While the creative teams for Paradise Lost and the untitled Wonder Woman movie haven't been revealed, Gunn did confirm for the first time that 'Wonder Woman's being written right now.' With Superman set to launch the new DCU on July 11th, all eyes are now on how the rest of the slate will take shape, including when we'll finally set foot on Themyscira again. Until then, we wait.

What Is Tinder's New Double Date Feature?
Earlier this week, Tinder launched 'Double Date,' a new feature that allows users to—wait for it—double date by pairing their profiles with friends and swiping for other paired matches. Double Daters can sync their profiles with up to three friends, arguably rendering the 'Double Date' of it all something of a misnomer, but that's neither here nor there. For world-weary daters like myself who have been swiping since the apps went mainstream a decade ago, this news may trigger flashbacks to the mid-2010s chaos that was 'Tinder Social,' a similar (and relatively short-lived) feature that allowed daters to swipe as a group. But enough showing my age. While Tinder Social was ostensibly a flop, launching in 2016 and sunsetting the following year, the app seems to be betting on a new generation of daters better suited to the group-dating mentality. As Tinder's resident relationship expert, Devyn Simone, puts it, 'Gen Z isn't shy about being, well, a little shy.' For a generation of post-pandemic daters who crave in-person interaction but were deprived of it during their formative years, 'Dating can feel like a high-stakes performance,' Simone tells Cosmo. Double Date 'turns it into a team sport, one that comes with a built-in gut check.' Meanwhile, in an age of dating-app burnout where singles are craving real-life connections but aren't sure where to find them, a group-date scenario—however app-originated—could potentially make a first date feel less like an algorithmically generated job interview and more like a low-stakes hang where sparks can fly (or not) organically. According to a press release, the new feature has already proven popular among its target demo, with nearly 90 percent of Double Date profiles coming from users under 29 years old (the oldest Gen Zs are, like my Zillennial self, currently 28). Testing also found that the feature may be particularly attractive to women, who were three times more likely to swipe right on a pair than on an individual profile. As for how that's playing out in real life—well, as one TikToker put it, 'Everywhere I turn they release more tools for men to be absolutely heinous because why did they release a Double Date feature on Tinder? I do not need to be seeing more than one of you guys at once.' Anyway, whether this summer is destined to be the summer of double (or triple or quadruple) dates or Double Date is headed for the same fate as its Millennial predecessor, I think we can all get on board with anything that gets us out of the house and actually interacting with other people. James Gunn Says His ‘Favorite' DCU Project Is a New TV Show, Talks Peacemaker‘s Importance to Phase 1
James Gunn's 'favorite thing' about the new DCU that will truly take flight when Superman flies into theaters next month is actually a TV show that 'hopefully will be made soon.' In a wide-ranging Q&A about his and fellow DC Studios CEO Peter Safran's plans for the new DCU, Gunn shared an update on a few TV projects, saying that (as of May 22), 'I'm about to wrap Peacemaker [Season 2, premiering Aug. 21]… We're going to see early episodes of that soon,' while 'Lanterns (starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Hal Jordan and John Stewart) is halfway through filming.
