Caitlin Clark's enforcer Sophie Cunningham destroys WNBA referees for failing to protect league's 'star player'

Daily Mail4 hours ago

Caitlin Clark 's teammate and enforcer Sophie Cunningham has slammed WNBA referees for 'not protecting' the Fever star after she was hip-checked to the ground this week during a wild clash.
Tensions rose in the second half of the Fever's matchup with the Sun on Tuesday when Clark was poked in the eye by Connecticut 's Jacy Sheldon, with the Indiana star delivering a shove to her rival in return.
Connecticut's Marina Mabrey then escalated the situation further as she forcefully bumped Clark to the hardwood.
And while Cunningham was not on the floor during the incident, she later avenged the contact on Clark with an extremely hard foul on Sheldon towards the end of the game, as she pulled her by her neck as she attempted a layup.
Cunningham was ejected for the play, but she didn't sound regretful of her actions as she criticized the way referees have officiated Clark.
'I'm not focused on the extracurricular activities,' Cunningham said at practice on Saturday. 'And you know what, during that, it was just part of the game. I think the refs had a lot to do with that.
'It was a buildup for a couple of years now of them just not protecting the star player of the WNBA. And so at the end of the day, I'm going to protect my teammates. That's what I do. And I'm a team player, so it's all good.'
Fever coach Stephanie White echoed that sentiment, saying the refs lacked 'control' of the game and that 'we knew this was gonna happen' in the first quarter.
However, Sun coach Rachid Meziane did not share that view of Cunningham's foul, which came with the Fever comfortably ahead and less than a minute on the clock.
'I did not understand. When you are winning the game by 17 points and you are doing this, to me, stupid foul,' Meziane said.
Footage that emerged after the game showed that Cunningham also tried to get involved in the initial scuffle involving Clark.
In the video, Cunningham - who was out of the game at the time - could be seen briefly trying to run towards the fracas before being intercepted by assistant coach Austin Kelly.
Kelly then held onto Cunningham for several seconds before the incident died down.
Cunningham received a fine from the league after the game, while Mabrey's technical foul (assessed for her shove on Clark) was also upgraded to a flagrant two foul, which came with a corresponding fine for such an infraction.
The tension between Clark and Sheldon had been building from earlier in the game, as the pair found themselves in a feisty exchange, with the Fever star firing off a volatile message after Sheldon appeared to say: 'You can't do that.'
'I can do whatever the f*** I want to do,' Clark said to Sheldon before shoving her away. Mabrey also stepped in to give a little shove to Clark, though things didn't escalate further in that situation.
The Fever will face the Aces in Las Vegas in Sunday.

Son: Deion Sanders making 'progress' amid health issue

June 22 - Colorado football coach Deion Sanders is improving in his battle with an unspecified health condition, his eldest son said. Deion Sanders Jr. posted a video of his father fishing at his Texas estate to YouTube on Saturday. "It's a beautiful thing," Deion Sanders Jr. says in the video. "Coach Prime back active, moving around. God is great. Not back active moving around, but it's progress." In the video, the elder Sanders, 57, is shown driving the fishing boat, which also counts former Colorado star and Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter among the passengers. Neither Sanders nor Colorado officials have given specifics about the nature of the health issue the coach is facing. He has been away from Boulder, missing annual youth camps he normally would have attended. He is scheduled to attend a Big 12 preseason media event on July 9 in Frisco, Texas. Sanders addressed his health in a social media post on June 11. "I can assure you all that everything is OK and will continue to be so," he posted to X. .".. I'm excited to get back to Colorado to be at home with my staff, team & all associated to our program. When we arrive back to Boulder you will be updated on everything." It is unclear when Sanders will return to the Buffaloes. A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Sanders required multiple surgeries for persistent blood clots in recent years. He had two toes amputated in 2021 to address clotting issues. --Field Level Media

‘Super excited' McCartney Kessler triumphs at Nottingham Open

McCartney Kessler won a third WTA Tour title after becoming the Nottingham Open champion. The American, who ended Briton Katie Boulter 's 13-match winning run at her home tournament in the quarter-finals, completed a perfect Wimbledon warm-up by beating Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska 6-4 7-5 in showery conditions where rain caused a 90-minute delay. She claimed her first title on grass and put herself in a great position heading to SW19, which starts next Monday. The 25-year-old, who ousted top seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in the first round, broke her opponent's serve in the opening game, setting the tone for the match. A second break immediately after a first rain break put her in control and she was on the brink of winning the first set when the rain came again, leading 5-4 30-15. A lengthy delay of over an hour and half caused frustration but the American returned to finish off the first set quickly. She put herself in position to win in a comfortable fashion with a break at 3-3 in the second set and then had five match points on Yastremska's serve. But the Ukranian battled hard to keep it going and then broke when Kessler served for the title for the first time. Kessler showed her mental fortitude, though, breaking straight back and then serving it out at the second attempt. "I am super excited to have another title, another great week of tennis for me," she said. "She is a really tough competitor. It was a tighter second set than I wanted at 5-3, but it made it more exciting." Yastremska lost her second final of the year but knows there is a bigger picture, due to the ongoing conflict in her home country. "It's been also been a tough week with what was going on in Ukraine so I have had to deal with a lot of things this week," she said. "I want to say I am proud of myself, I am improving some things I am working on. Not the win, but I hope soon, it's day-by-day." 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova showcased her prowess on the grass by triumphing at the Berlin Open. The Czech reigned supreme at SW19 two years ago and is again looking in good shape after winning a tight contest against Chinese Xinyu Wang 7-6 (10) 4-6 6-2.

‘Are you ready for Strictly?' – Snooker star Shaun Murphy shows off amazing dance moves while onboard a ‘wine train'

SHAUN MURPHY could be getting ready for Strictly Come Dancing after showing off his dance moves on board a wine train. The snooker star, 42, enjoyed a well-earned break following the conclusion of the 2024-25 season. 2 Murphy earned £327,900 to rank ninth in the one-year World Snooker Tour list. He suffered a second-round exit to No2 seed Judd Trump at the World Championship. And then the Englishman lost 4-3 to Mark Williams in the Helsinki International Cup in May. Now Murphy is home after letting his hair down with a holiday in America. The Magician took to Instagram with a pair of posts from the trip. The first was a picture of Murphy smiling in a restaurant earlier in June. He captioned it: "Off season going well - not sure I'll remember how to play snooker at this rate." Then the next post from Friday showed Murphy dancing along to music while riding along the road - with a drink in hand. He was decked out in a pink shirt, grey trousers and sunglasses as September by Earth, Wind & Fire pumped out of the speakers. Murphy wrote: "Just back from a two-week holiday in the States. Ronnie O'Sullivan is BACK with Strictly star Laila Rouass as they ditch Essex for shock new life abroad "I promise it wasn't all drinking and dancing. "Looking forward to getting back on the baize!" And the brilliant video sparked plenty of reaction in the comments. Fellow snooker great Stephen Hendry said: "Oh dear." BBC Sport's Jason Mohammad replied: "Scenes." Another added: "Hate him or love him, but you cannot deny, he got the moves!!! Enjoy it!!!" A fourth typed: "I can't unsee this unfortunately." And a fifth quipped: "Are you ready for Strictly?" But upon his return home, Murphy did not have long to get ready for his 2025-26 season opener. The 2005 world champ took to Instagram again on Sunday afternoon with a photo of himself in action and wrote: "How is it time for the new season???? "Wuhan Qualifier, tomorrow 2.30pm (UK time)."
