Sophie Cunningham Sends Telling Message After Getting Ejected

Sophie Cunningham Sends Telling Message After Getting Ejected originally appeared on The Spun. Sophie Cunningham got the last word during Tuesday night's game between the Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun, pulling Jacy Sheldon to the ground during the final minute of regulation. Advertisement This wasn't a random act of violence from Cunningham. It seemed like she was retaliating for the way Sheldon guarded Caitlin Clark. During the third quarter of Tuesday's game, Sheldon poked the former No. 1 pick in the eye. If that wasn't bad enough, Marina Mabrey shoved Clark to the ground. Even though Cunningham's foul on Sheldon was considered retaliation, Sun head coach Rachid Meziane had a huge issue with it. Meziane didn't just call Cunningham's decision "completely stupid," he had an issue with the referees ejecting Sheldon for how she responded to the foul. "When you are winning a game by 17 points and you doing this stupid foul, this is just disrespectful," Meziane told reporters. "I don't know how Jacy and Lindsay [got] rejected from the game when they did nothing." Advertisement On Tuesday night, Cunningham posted a photo of her holding out her arms on her Instagram Story. It seemed like her way of trolling Sheldon and the Sun. "I knew Sophie was going to get that get back for Caitlin today. Sophie definitely getting ejected for that, but so what. Sophie is definitely the enforcer of this team," one fan said. "Sophie Cunningham was born to defend Caitlin Clark and the rest of her teammates. Enforcer Barbie," another fan wrote. The WNBA has not yet said if it'll discipline Cunningham for her actions. As of now, Cunningham is available to play against the Golden State Valkyries this Thursday. Advertisement The Fever and Sun will meet again on July 15. We'll see if there are any fireworks during the rematch. Sophie Cunningham Reacts to Lexie Hull's New Post After Sun Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As of Wednesday, the Indiana Fever are 6‑5 and No.3 in the East. They have just secured two crucial victories: one on Saturday over the 10-1 New York Liberty and another on Tuesday over the Connecticut Sun. Advertisement Off the court, the team is revelling in just as much success. On Wednesday morning, Fever guard Lexie Hull took to Instagram to share snapshots from what she described as a "successful business trip," showcasing her Athleta Apero Mesh Tank and Transcend Scoop Bra paired with a skirt set from an ensemble she dubbed "corporate 🔥." Within a few minutes, fellow Fever guard Sophie Cunningham weighed in, commenting, "a queen 😍." Hull, drafted sixth overall by the Fever in the 2022 WNBA Draft, has steadily grown into a reliable two‑way contributor. A Stanford graduate, Hull has earned the Elite 90 Award at the 2022 NCAA Final Four and multiple Academic All‑American honors in her time with the Cardinals. Stephen A. Smith insists Fever star Caitlin Clark ‘instigates resentment' toward her

The post Stephen A. Smith insists Fever star Caitlin Clark 'instigates resentment' toward her appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Indiana Fever's easy win over the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday evening was in many ways overshadowed by various scuffles that took place throughout the game. It started when Jacy Sheldon of the Sun poked Fever star Caitlin Clark in the eye in the third quarter, which led to a skirmish in which Clark was decked to the floor by Marina Mabrey. Advertisement Later in the game, Fever star Sophie Cunningham retaliated against Sheldon, committing a hard foul against her on a fast break and getting ejected from the game. The incidents reignited a slew of discourse about WNBA players' perceived jealousy of Clark and whether her Fever teammates have been sticking up for her enough amid the vitriol. On Wednesday, ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith weighed in on the debate with an interesting opinion on First Take. 'There's also resentment towards her because she instigates resentment towards her… The whole Angel Reese thing with her started because when Caitlin [Clark] was giving it to everybody else, she was the one waving her in their face,' said Smith. Advertisement Clark indeed has never shied away from showmanship throughout her career dating back to her days at Iowa, which captured national headlines during her back-and-forth with Angel Reese of LSU during the 2023 championship game. Business as usual for the Fever © Grace Smith/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images The Fever now sit at 6-5 on the season, having weathered the storm of a previous Clark injury that kept her out of the lineup for multiple weeks. Clark once again crossed the 20-point plateau during Tuesday evening's win vs the Sun, who now sit at a lowly 2-9 on the campaign. As previously mentioned, some of Clark's Fever teammates have received criticism over the past two years for not standing up for the point guard as much as fans want them to in the face of perceived dirty plays from the opposition. Advertisement However, no such criticism can be directed at Cunningham, who made sure to get her money's worth with her hard foul on Sheldon. The Fever will next take the floor on Thursday vs the Golden State Valkyries on the road. Sophie Cunningham, Marina Mabrey avoid suspensions after Fever-Sun clash

The post Sophie Cunningham, Marina Mabrey avoid suspensions after Fever-Sun clash appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Indiana Fever are becoming appointment television in the WNBA. Indiana defeated Connecticut 88-71 on Tuesday night in a hotly contested game. A late hit on Caitlin Clark by Marina Mabrey caused emotions to reach a boiling point. They eventually boiled over in the fourth quarter, leading to a brawl that ended with three players ejected. Advertisement The WNBA responded on Wednesday by issuing additional discipline. Marina Mabrey's technical foul has been upgraded to a flagrant 2 per ESPN's Alexa Philippou. All flagrant 2 fouls come with a standard fine. Additionally, Fever guard Sophie Cunningham was fined separately for her hard foul on Jacy Sheldon in the closing minutes of the game. The WNBA did not issue any suspensions stemming from last night's game. The brawl at the end of Tuesday's game has resulted in plenty of takes among the media. It will be interesting to see where each team's heads are at when the Fever and Sun play each other next on July 15th. Stephanie White, Caitlin Clark respond after Fever's heated win against the Sun Jeffrey Becker-Imagn Images Everyone seemed to have a different reaction following the altercations during Tuesday's big game. Advertisement Clark was calm during her postgame interview, making it clear that she only wanted to talk about basketball. 'I'm here to play basketball. My game's gonna talk and that's all that really matters,' Clark said. 'I love this game, and I'm gonna give it everything I have. I think that's what competitors do. You just step right back up to the challenge.' Meanwhile, Fever coach Stephanie White took a different approach. She took the issue head on, blaming officiating for letting the situation get out of hand. 'Everybody's getting better — except the officials,' White said. White also declared that she started getting in the referee's ear about the physicality of the game during the first quarter. Advertisement 'I started talking to the officials in the first quarter, and we knew this was going to happen. You could tell it was going to happen. So they got to get control of it. They got to be better,' White concluded. White may feel vindicated that the league upgraded Mabrey's foul to a flagrant 2. But that doesn't erase her issues with the W's officiating. Next up for the Fever is a three-game road trip on the west coast. It begins with Indiana's first ever game against Golden State on Thursday night. Fever-Sun postgame brawl draws fines from WNBA

The post Fever-Sun postgame brawl draws fines from WNBA appeared first on ClutchPoints. Tuesday night's contest between the Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun turned plenty of heads for how chippy it was throughout. Everything boiled over late in the fourth quarter after Sophie Cunningham defended Caitlin Clark in the closing seconds. The WNBA announced fines for several players involved. Advertisement Reports indicate that Sun guard Marina Mabrey's flagrant one call was upgraded to a flagrant two, and she is being given a standard fine, according to Alexa Philippou of ESPN. Cunningham was also slapped with a fine for her hard foul on Jacy Sheldon, who got in a tiff with Clark several times throughout the game. 'Marina Mabrey's technical from last night's Fever-Sun game has been upgraded to a flagrant 2, the league told ESPN. A flagrant 2 comes from a standard fine. Additionally, Sophie Cunningham was fined separately for her hard foul with 46 seconds to play. No players will be suspended.' Philippou also reports that neither head coach of either team were given a fine for openly criticizing referees after the game. The only individuals to receive fines from the WNBA are Marina Mabrey and Sophie Cunningham. The Fever's Stephanie White was quick to critique the refs shortly after the game. 'And to this point, neither coach has been fined for their postgame criticism over the officiating.' Advertisement Mabrey was the player who shoved Caitlin Clark to the ground shortly after the Fever guard retaliated for getting hit in the face by Sheldon. Despite the chaos that ensued, Indiana got the last laugh after winning the contest in an 88-71 blowout. Since the postgame brawl, Sophie Cunningham has become a fan favorite amongst social media users. It came to light that the 28-year-old guard has a black belt in Taekwondo, which she achieved at the age of six. Cunningham ended Tuesday night's game with five points of her own, along with seven rebounds and an assist. We can expect the full Fever roster back in action on Thursday when they take on the Golden State Valkyries.
