Estimate says lithium-boron deposits 45% more than expected at Rhyolite Ridge
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A new estimate indicates the Rhyolite Ridge mine site northwest of Las Vegas has 45% more lithium-boron deposits than previously calculated.
Ioneer, the Australian company behind the mine project, released the updated estimate less than a week after losing its biggest investor, a South African multinational mining company that dropped out citing low lithium prices. Ioneer is now the 100% owner of the Rhyolite Ridge project.
'Today's updated Resource reinforces the remarkable flexibility of Rhyolite Ridge's unique mineralogy,' Bernard Rowe, Ioneer's managing director, said in a news release. 'It allows Ioneer to match prevailing market conditions and blend our ore to produce a valuable boric acid coproduct, whose market is separate from the Project's primary lithium product.'
The mine site is in Esmeralda County, midway between Las Vegas and Reno. The mine was approved in October 2024. In January, the U.S. Department of Energy finalized a $996 million loan for the project
Only active lithium mine in US seeks expansion in Nevada's Esmeralda County
Analysis of samples from 12 drill holes completed in 2024 led to the 45% increase in the estimate. The analysis was completed by an independent mining consultant
'No other lithium project has this flexibility and economic advantage. In times of low lithium pricing as exists today, the Company can prioritize the high-boron ore (Stream 1) over the low-boron ore (Stream 2) to optimize the relative proportion of total revenue derived from boron,' according to Rowe.
Ioneer was not named in a lawsuit filed on Oct. 31, 2024, over the Bureau of Land Management's decision to approve the Rhyolite Ridge mine. A rare wildflower — Tiehm's buckwheat — found only at the site is likely to go extinct if the mine moves forward.
'This lawsuit is about much more than just preventing the extinction of Tiehm's buckwheat,' Patrick Donnelly, Great Basin director at the Center for Biological Diversity, said in a news release. 'The Bureau of Land Management's authorization of the Rhyolite Ridge Mine is a flagrant violation of numerous environmental protection laws, and the integrity of these bedrock conservation laws is at stake. We need lithium for the crucial transition to renewable energy, but the government can't break the law and drive species to extinction to get it.'
Tiehm's buckwheat grows on 10 acres that fall completely within the footprint of the boron- and lithium-rich soils of the Silver Peak Range in Esmeralda County.

'Roadblock': Paramount Stock (NASDAQ:PARA) Surges as the Trump Settlement Sputters
As it turns out, entertainment giant Paramount (PARA) was actually fairly close to a deal with President Trump over the 60 Minutes lawsuit. But, when the deal was fairly close, a 'roadblock' emerged and put a halt to the whole matter, at least for now. Investors reacted with surprising strength, and perhaps even more surprising positivity. Paramount shares gained nearly 2.5% in the closing minutes of Friday's trading. Confident Investing Starts Here: The settlement had reached $35 million, reports noted, when Paramount suddenly found itself paralyzed by indecision. That delay caused Trump lawyers to pivot and pull back to their original demand, calling for a $50 million settlement. The biggest problem seems to be that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is also involved in this, and needs to sign off on the merger with Skydance as well. Reports suggested that Paramount brass believes that the FCC's sign-off on the deal needs to be contingent on settling the case, but by like token, the idea that requiring FCC approval as part of the settlement looks a lot like a bribe. Trump's legal team, reports note, has already been clear that the Trump suit and the FCC case are two separate matters. But with outside organizations looking to launch their own lawsuits should the settlement go through, looks may count for more here than anyone expected. South Park Losses Mount Meanwhile, as Paramount faces the prospect of losing South Park exclusivity, it quietly pulled another old episode from the field. The pull this time showed up in the Canadian and Australian markets, reports noted, and this time, featured Butters' Very Own Episode pulled from Paramount+. Why, however, is a bit of a mystery. Several South Park episodes are apparently a bit too spicy for streaming, in retrospect, with around a dozen classic episodes set to be pulled from the catalog and relegated to a 'ban list', reports noted. The reports got stranger as an Australian viewer noted that the Paramount+ listing had been pulled, but the episode could still be watched by watching through Paramount+ on Amazon (AMZN) Prime Video. Is Paramount Stock a Good Buy Right Now? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on PARA stock based on two Buys, eight Holds and five Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 18.62% rally in its share price over the past year, the average PARA price target of $12.08 per share implies 2.23% downside risk.

Congress could sell off 14 million acres of public land in Colorado
More than 14 million acres of federal public land in Colorado could be eligible for sale if Congress passes the Trump administration's budget bill, per a new analysis by a conservation nonprofit. Why it matters: This includes some of the state's most popular hiking, skiing and camping areas across the Western Slope. The big picture: The Republican-led proposal would require the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to put up to 3.3 million acres on the market for housing development. The bill's focus is on parcels outside of protected lands (like national parks, monuments or wilderness areas, which are exempt) but near roads and other development deemed suitable by local and state lawmakers. The Wilderness Society estimates more than 250 million acres across 11 Western states could be eligible for sale. Zoom in: In Colorado, that means some of its most prized public lands could be up for grabs, including sweeping sections of the Arapaho, San Juan and Rio Grande national forests. Also on the line are iconic stretches of the Million Dollar Highway and beloved hiking spots near Kenosha and Guanella passes, especially popular during fall leaf-peeping season. Follow the money: Most of the revenue — projected between $5 billion and $10 billion over the next decade — would go to the U.S. Treasury. Just 5% would trickle down to local governments. It's unclear how much the sale of public lands would negatively impact the outdoor recreation economy, which generated $1.2 trillion in economic output and supported 5 million jobs nationwide in 2023. Reality check: A recent Headwaters Economics report found less than 2% of public lands in the West near housing-hungry towns are actually suitable for development, and could be complicated due to high wildfire risk. The fine print: For the first decade, the land could only be sold for housing or related infrastructure — but after 10 years, that restriction vanishes, opening the door to virtually any kind of development, from strip malls to oil rigs. What they're saying: Colorado Democratic U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper, who sits on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources committee, told CPR no Democrats on the committee were given advance notice or could offer input, despite their states being on the list.
