Rising SoCal culinary star dies in freak Hawaii hiking accident, hit by tumbling boulder

Yahoo03-04-2025

A young and rising culinary star in Southern California died in a freak accident in Hawaii, according to family, who said the tragedy occurred as she was fulfilling a long-held dream to hike to the Makaleha Falls waterfall in Kauai.
Gianna Buzzetta, a 26-year-old executive pastry chef at the Jeune et Jolie restaurant in Carlsbad, was hiking the challenging waterfall trail with her boyfriend last week when disaster struck, according to a statement from her family.
The Kaua'i Fire Department responded to a call for a hiker who was hit by a tumbling boulder while standing in the pool of the waterfall on March 23, the department said in a news release. The hiker, who was found unconscious and bleeding from a head wound, was airlifted to medical care.
Buzzetta's parents then flew to Hawaii and were able to say their goodbyes before she died in the hospital, according to reporting from ABC10.
"She had told her boyfriend, Connor, that day, he had fulfilled her dreams and it was the best day of her life," her mother, Caty Buzzetta, told the station. "In a glimpse of time, she had pure bliss, no one could take that from her or us."
In an online fundraiser to help cover Buzzetta's medical fees and funeral expenses, her family described her as determined, tenacious, insightful and kind, with a crazy sense of humor and an infectious laugh.
"As an executive pastry chef her dedication to perfection in artistry led her to master her talents at Jeune et Jolie in Carlsbad," wrote the family. "She poured herself, her love and creativity into everything she brought to the table."
While working at Jeune et Jolie, Buzzetta helped the modern French restaurant achieve three Michelin stars.
"She brought such joy, intensity, passion and love to this restaurant and to our team," said the restaurant on Instagram. "Her sudden loss leaves all of us heartbroken, and searching for ways to be of help to her family."
Jeune et Jolie will be holding a special dinner on Monday to honor the memory of the young pastry chef.
Restaurant owner John Resnick told Fox5 News that Buzzetta's sudden death was a devastating blow for all who knew her and worked with her.
"She was a huge part of the team. Super creative, super talented, incredibly hardworking," he told the station. "Our whole team loved working alongside her."
In the fundraising post, Buzzetta's family expressed their gratitude for the first responders in Hawaii and Buzzetta's boyfriend, Connor Quinton, who they say "gave heroically every last effort to save her running a great distance desperately getting her help."

'Bird Names' Among Trending Baby Names in 2025

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A new study from BabyCenter has revealed the top baby naming trends of 2025, ranging from luxury names to bird-inspired ones. Why It Matters Baby naming trends can often reflect broader cultural shifts and social values. The Social Security Administration (SSA) recently released its list of the most used baby names in the United States for 2024, with Olivia and Liam maintaining their reign as America's top choices for the sixth consecutive year. What To Know One of the trends identified by BabyCenter is the use of bird names. The study found that Robin (up 274 spots), Raven (up 39 spots), Dove (up 717 spots) and Jay (up 41 spots) have all risen in popularity. So has the name Mavis (up 17 spots), which originates from a French word for the song thrush, and Callum (up 21 spots), which comes from the Latin word for dove. Nostalgic names are also on the rise, according to the study. 1990s-inspired names were another trend highlighted in the study, with Sabrina, inspired by Sabrina the Teenage Witch, up 19 spots. Britney, as in Britney Spears, went up over 1,200 spots, and Shania, an homage to Shania Twain, went up over 800 spots. Diana, linked to the late princess, was up 39 spots. Another trend highlighted is loud luxury names—think Tiffany, Bentley, Manolo, and Laurent. All names associated with luxury brands, such as jewelry company Tiffany & Co., car company Bentley Motors, and the fashion houses Manolo Blahnik and Saint Laurent. DIRK WAEM/BELGA MAG/AFP via Getty Images Lux (up 110 spots for boys and 401 spots for girls), Treasure (up 122 spots for girls and 1307 spots for boys), Cash (up 11 spots), Emerald (up 86 spots for girls) and Golden (up 647 spots for boys and up 65 spots for girls) are all also on the rise. The Oscars were also an influential factor in baby names, with the name Anoraexperiencing a notable rise in popularity, jumping 1,105 spots, inspired by the Best Picture-winning film. Rebekah Wahlberg, the baby name trends specialist at BabyCenter, told Newsweek that it's "interesting to see that with the current feelings of economic uncertainty among parents, they're gravitating toward luxury-inspired names as a way to manifest prosperity for their children." "This shift toward names that signal wealth reflects parents' deeper hopes – like all parents, they want security and opportunity for their children," Wahlberg added. Overall, the top 10 baby names for boys are: Noah, Liam, Oliver, Elijah, Mateo, Lucas, Levi, Ezra, Asher and James. For girls, the top 10 names are: Olivia, Amelia, Sophia, Emma, Charlotte, Isabella, Ava, Mia and Aurora. Analysis from Go Au Pair, released earlier this year, compiled data on the most unique baby names across the United States. Some of the rarer names identified include Wylder in Vermont, Naim in Delaware, Mazikeen in Wyoming, Babyboy in New Hampshire, and Jahziel in Rhode Island. These names were given to just five babies within their respective states over the past 23 years. Nationally, the popularity of these names remains low, with Wylder recorded only 1,873 times, Naim 1,549 times, Mazikeen 1,236 times, Babyboy 952 times, and Jahziel 883 times. BabyCenter explains its methodology in its study. It stated that the name data is volunteered by parents who enter the names of their babies on the BabyCenter app in real time, something they've been doing for 20 years, thus providing a look into the popularity of different baby names. What People Are Saying BabyCenter, in its study: "BabyCenter gathers baby names from hundreds of thousands of parents who register their babies' names on the BabyCenter app in real time. (We've done this for 20 years!) This means we have a live look at what names are trending and falling, and we're sharing the latest." What Happens Next Wahlberg told Newsweek,"With peak birth months approaching—babies are most often born in August, July, and September, according to our data—many families are choosing names right now."

Beyoncé Wears a Wet-Look Minidress, Fringe, and Latex at Her Final Paris Cowboy Carter Show

THE RUNDOWN Last night, Beyoncé wrapped the Paris leg of her Cowboy Carter Tour and debuted a few new looks for the occasion. At the Stade de France, where she performed for three nights (on June 19, 21, and 22), Mrs. Carter brought French fashion to the stage in a gray custom Balmain minidress with a train, which was structured to look like wet fabric. She accessorized with sheer gloves, gold jewelry, a signature cowboy hat, and a long white coat. Beyoncé's mom, Tina Knowles, posted a photo from the show of Balmain's creative director, Olivier Rousteing, posing in front of a screen that showed the look. In her caption, she wrote, 'I loved taking this photo of The incredible creative director of @balmain Mr @olivier_rousteing with his beautiful design of This dress @beyonce is wearing on the Cowboy Carter show tonight!' At another point in the evening, the pop star slipped into a burgundy latex leotard with matching chaps, a trench coat, gloves, and another cowboy hat. The artist also wore an all-silver outfit, a nod to the shimmery color that became an emblem of 2023's Renaissance World Tour. She wore a silver corset top with matching fringe chaps, the latter of which have quickly become one of her favorite wardrobe motifs on the tour thus far. Outfits weren't the only new additions to the Paris leg. On opening night, Beyoncé was joined by her shotgun rider, Miley Cyrus, for a performance of their Grammy-winning song, 'II Most Wanted.' Cyrus took to Instagram to celebrate the moment, writing, '@beyonce to be beside such a humble, gracious, legendary DIVA was a dream come true. Thank you for the opportunity to perform in Paris together & sing our song about friendship. To have learned from you & loved you my whole life, & then be standing together in matching gold looks is more than I could've imagined. As the finale to this trip supporting Something Beautiful, to close on something as beautiful as a stadium full of people singing 'II Most Wanted' with us was the ultimate firework. Thank you B.
