NEW DELHI: The bypolls to five assembly seats on Thursday across Gujarat, Kerala, Punjab and West Bengal recorded several firsts, including faster voter turnout updates, webcasting at 100% polling stations and provision of mobile deposit facility at polling stations.
The assembly constituencies (ACs) , which witnessed moderate-to-high polling, include Kadi (SC) and Visavadar in Gujarat, Nilambur in Kerala, Ludhiana West in Punjab and Kaliganj in West Bengal.
'The bye-polls...witnessed successful implementation of several major new initiatives launched by the ECI in the past four months, as envisaged by the chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar along with election commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi,' EC said in a statement issued at the end of poll.
An initiative introduced in these bye-polls is the provision of mobile deposit facility for the electors at all polling stations. Upgraded voter turnout sharing process ensured faster availability of approximate polling trends by ensuring that the presiding officer updated the voter turnout data at the close of poll, prior to leaving the polling station. Webcasting facility at almost all polling stations helped ensure constant vigil of the polling process.

Special Summary Revision (SSR) of the electoral rolls was conducted before the bye-polls for the first time in nearly two decades.
The successful implementation of the above-mentioned measures in the bye-polls paves the way for their replication in the ensuing Bihar assembly election.
For the first time, simple pigeonhole boxes or jute bags were provided at the entrance door of the polling stations to enable the voters to deposit their mobile phones before queueing up to vote.
Volunteers were deployed at the polling stations to facilitate the process.
The presiding officer of each polling station, in a first, entered the voter turnout on the new ECINET App every two hours on polling day, reducing the time lag in updating of approximate polling trends. This was automatically aggregated at the constituency level. Also, voter turnout data was entered into ECINET by presiding officers immediately before they left the polling station after completion of poll, to ensure that the approximate percentage of votes polled was available on the app constituency-wise after the close of poll.
Previously, voter turnout data was collected manually by sector officers and relayed to returning officers (ROs) via phone calls, SMS, or messaging apps. At the close of poll, the presiding officer used to update the final VTR data after completing all other statutory responsibilities. Thus, the polling percentage trends were often updated hours later.
The Commission has ensured 100% webcasting of poll-day activities at all polling stations, except one, in the five bye-poll ACs.

T S Singh Deo questions Amit Shah over US travel advisory on women's safety in Chhattisgarh
RAIPUR: Former Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister and senior Congress leader T S Singh Deo on Sunday has sparked a political firestorm, questioning Union Home Minister Amit Shah on a recent US travel advisory, which warns American citizens, particularly women, against traveling alone in India, with a specific caution against visiting Naxal-affected regions like Chhattisgarh. Taking to X, T S Singh Deo cited the advisory and asked, 'The US govt has clearly stated that women should not travel alone in India, especially in Chhattisgarh. Why? Because rape, violence, and terrorism are out of control.' Calling it a serious global embarrassment for India, he said the advisory is an indictment of the law-and-order situation under both the Modi govt at the Centre and the BJP-led state govt in Chhattisgarh. ''Beti Bachao' has been reduced to just a slogan and posters,' Singh Deo wrote. 'This is a collective failure of both govts that has now tarnished the nation's image on the international stage.' He further challenged Home Minister Amit Shah, who was in Raipur for official engagements, including laying the foundation of forensic institutes, to go beyond speeches and conduct a serious review of internal security and women's safety, areas that fall directly under his ministerial responsibility. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo 'When the Home Minister is here in Chhattisgarh, he must address why such alarming advisories are being issued about our state,' Singh Deo added. Singh Deo didn't stop at the advisory alone. He stepped up attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's global leadership claims, calling them 'hollow,' and alleged that even 'Modiji's closest allies are now exposing the truth behind the façade of the so-called 'Amrit Kaal'.' 'If urgent reforms are not brought in, India under Modi's 'New India' slogans will continue to be met only with warnings and humiliation on the global stage,' he warned. What Does the US Advisory Say? The US Department of State's travel advisory specifically cautions its citizens—especially women—against traveling alone in India, citing rising incidents of rape and sexual violence, particularly in tourist hotspots, transit centers, markets, and shopping malls. The advisory further warns against travel to Naxal-affected regions including Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, and eastern Maharashtra, due to the ongoing Maoist insurgency. It also discourages visits to Manipur, citing violent unrest and high crime rates. The US government emphasized that its ability to provide emergency assistance in rural and remote areas is limited, further underscoring the risks for solo travellers, especially women.

Why has Barron Trump become the center of mockery amid Trump's Iran escalation?
Barron Trump has unexpectedly become the target of online mockery following President Donald Trump's announcement that the United States launched a series of airstrikes on Iran. The military action, which targeted three key sites early Sunday, marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel—one that the US has now openly joined, as reported by the Irish Star. Barron Trump faces online mockery after airstrikes on Iran, as users joke about a potential military exemption due to inherited bone spurs. AP/PTI(AP01_21_2025_000054B)(AP) As political tensions rise and critics question the legality of the strikes, attention on social media has oddly turned toward the President's youngest son. Also Read: Can Trump declare war on Iran without US Congress approval? His airstrikes raise fears and questions Why is Barron Trump being criticized? The strikes sparked a wave of fear online, with many warning that the conflict could escalate into World War 3. Alongside genuine concern, a flood of dark humor and speculation emerged across social media, as users joked about the possibility of being drafted into military service. This led to unfavorable comparisons between Barron and his father, Trump, who famously avoided stepping into the Vietnam War after being diagnosed with bone spurs. In 1968, amid the height of the Vietnam War, Trump, then 22 years old, was diagnosed with bone spurs in his heels, a condition that ultimately exempted him from military service. This diagnosis came after he had already received four deferments for educational reasons. Now, with the war-like situations rising again, many jokes on social media are that Barron would avoid joining the army just like his father did. A third user wrote, "Barron Trump's military exemption? Will it be "bone spurs 2.0" like Dad's? A new, creative mental health claim? The world waits with bated breath... Let's be honest, a Trump in uniform? Unlikely". Another user wrote, 'Apparently Barron Trump has been spotted visiting a doctor to get his hereditary bone spurs checked out.'

'Decisive leadership': Nikki Haley, Mike Pence approve of Trump's 'Operation Midnight Hammer' on Iran
Nikki Haley and Mike Pence praised Trump's decision to attack Iran. Republicans who moved away from Donald Trump , including his vice president during his first term, Mike Pence , endorsed his attack on Iran, which was codenamed 'Operation Midnight Hammer'. Even Nikki Haley , the former US ambassador to the UN, and the Republican leader who did not endorse Trump ahead of the 2024 election, praised Trump's action against Iran -- while the Make America Great Again group remained split over Trump's decision to attack Iran. "Well done," Nikki Haley wrote to the president's announcement of completing a successful attack in Fordown, Nantanz and Esfahan in Iran. — NikkiHaley (@NikkiHaley) Mike Pence said Trump made the "right call" to deploy American forces to strike Iran's nuclear sits and he should be commended for his decision leadership. "Iran could never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. Thanks to the resolve of our Commander in Chief and the courage and professionalism of our Armed Forces, America, Israel and the Free World are safer as a result. Iran should now stand down and abandon any thought of retaliation against Americans or be prepared to face the consequences. Tonight President @realDonaldTrump proved again that the United States of America is the Leader of the Free World and America Stands with Israel. Thank You Mr. President and God Bless Our Troops," Mike Pence posted. 'This is not Constitutional' Rep Thomas Massie (R-KY), who repeatedly urged Trump to avoid getting dragged into the Israel-Iran war, said the president's bypassing the congressional authority to launch such military strikes was not Constitutional. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트 최대 할인 지원해드려요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo Republican leader Marjorie Taylor Greene said the Israel-Iran war was not a US fight. "Every time America is on the verge of greatness, we get involved in another foreign war. There would not be bombs falling on the people of Israel if Netanyahu had not dropped bombs on the people of Iran first. Israel is a nuclear-armed nation. This is not our fight.
