'Why Rangers can't afford to sell Dessers'
On Sunday, I posed the question in commentary at Tannadice: "Can Rangers afford to sell Cyriel Dessers?" after a remarkable period for the much-maligned striker.His goal to clinch the 3-1 victory, like the one he scored at Old Trafford a few days earlier, was magnificent, making it six in four games after his Scottish Cup hat-trick against Fraserburgh and his strike off the bench against Aberdeen.So the answer to my question is quite straightforward in my mind. Of course they can't. Yes, he'll continue to miss chances that defy belief, but even though the emergence of Hamza Igamane had relegated Dessers to the bench in recent times, the pair dovetailed well against Dundee United and there is no reason not to continue with that pairing over the weeks and months to come.That win over United was massive for Rangers and it should do them a power of good psychologically. I think it was Craig Levein alongside me in commentary who described them as a "Jekyll and Hyde team" and it was a pretty apt description.For the first 35 minutes of that game they were second best, didn't look up for the physical battle and seemed to be heading for another away game without a victory or maybe even a point.Mohamed Diomande's equaliser came out of the blue but was the catalyst for a much-improved performance and by the end they could have run away with the game.It typifies Rangers' season. Very rarely have they turned in a good 90-minute display, but when they are playing with confidence, they look unstoppable.If they play as they did in the closing hour at Tannadice against Union Saint-Gilloise on Thursday, I fully expect them to beat the Belgians.And with that, looking at the permutations, it's far from impossible that they can squeeze into the top eight and qualify automatically for the last 16, which would be a phenomenal achievement for a team and manager who have come in for enormous criticism this season.

Now he's set to rekindle their relationship in Glasgow as he becomes his second signing after Lyall Cameron's move from Dundee was formally completed last week. And it's claimed Aarons turned down other options down south including in England's top flight. A report by TBR Football says Premier League new boys Leeds United were interested in his securing a loan deal for the former England Under 21 international. Rangers captain James Tavernier spotted training with ex-team-mate and old Premiership rival Ryan Porteous who branded him 'bad loser' Leeds are managed by Daniel Farke who was Aarons former boss at Norwich, and are also owned by 49ers Enterprises - the investment arm of the San Francisco 49ers NFL team. They were part of the US consortium which completed the takeover of Rangers last month. The report also claims Burnley, who secured promotion to the Premier League, and a host of other Championship clubs were interested in the full-back as well. Rangers boss Russell Martin is looking to get players through the door with a tricky Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos on the horizon. Their pursuit of Israeli striker Dor Turgeman has apparently hit 'a major snag', with complications surrounding the current geopolitical landscape there. The Ibrox side are also preparing talks with Belgian star Nico Raskin as Martin looks to build his team around the talented midfielder. Kevin Thomson opens up on Rangers coaching future as he insists ball is in new Ibrox regime's court
Thomson returned to Gers academy coaching set-up earlier this year Kevin Thomson admits he doesn't know if he will continue his role in the coaching set-up at Rangers next season. The former midfielder returned to the club back in January to work alongside U18s boss Steven Smith at Ibrox back in January after initially leaving Gers to become manager of Kelty Hearts back in 2021. Despite leading the Fife side to the League Two title in his first season, Thomson opted to step away from the job, turning his focus to media commitments. Thomson had been linked with a position on former teammate Barry Ferguson' s coaching team when the ex Light Blues captain replaced the sacked Philippe Clement back in February, but was omitted in favour of Neil McCann, Allan McGregor and Billy Dodds. New boss Russell Martin has been joined at Ibrox by one-time Rangers goalkeeper Matt Gilks and performance analyst Rhys Owen, who both worked with him at previous club Southampton. And with Thomson current contract with Rangers set to expire on June 30 - he says he is yet to learn if he will remain a part of the new owners 49ers Enterpises plans going forward. Speaking on BBC Sportsound. he said: "Obviously in that time there's been a takeover, a new manager. "My contract finished on June 30. As of yet I've not really had much dialogue with the club. "I'm just waiting to see what's what. "Moving forward, if there's an opportunity there then brilliant. "If there's not, then you know what I'm like, I just bash on and keep grafting away."
