Eels star Cherrington to miss start of NRLW season
Kennedy Cherrington will miss at least the first three weeks of the NRLW season with the knee injury she suffered in the third State of Origin match.
She could be joined on the sidelines by captain Mahalia Murphy, who is racing to recover from a minor hamstring injury in time for the season opener against Cronulla.
Parramatta had initially hoped NSW forward Cherrington may recover from her posterior cruciate ligament injury in time for the opener on July 3.
But she is now tracking to miss up to a third of the regular season with the injury that prevented her from playing the second half of NSW's game-three loss in Newcastle last month.
It's a blow for Cherrington, who missed the end of last season with a separate knee issue.
"It's tough for Kennedy but it'll be good to get her for the back half of the season," said coach Steve Georgallis.
"We're hoping she'll be back for round four or round five at the latest."
Eels captain for a second straight season, Murphy is hoping to return from a hamstring injury in time to face the Sharks.
"Mahalia's just got a little niggle," Georgallis said.
"We're hoping she should be back for round one but if we feel like she's not ready then we're not going to push her."
The news is less rosy for Eels forward Boss Kapua, who fractured her fibula in an opposed session and will miss the opening weeks of the competition.
"She's tough, she walked off the field and she just said, 'I'm a bit sore here'," Georgallis said.
"We were glad it wasn't syndesmosis because syndesmosis can be like 12 (weeks), three months. She'll be three or four weeks. She might even be back before Kennedy."

He came down on the bag to record the out but landed awkwardly, immediately clutching at the back of his right leg and tumbling to the ground. He left Thursday's game with two outs in the fifth inning and the Mets leading 4-0. Senga had only thrown 77 pitches to that point. New York used four relievers over the final 3.1 innings but held on for the 4-3 win. Senga is now 7-3 on the season with a major league-leading 1.47 ERA. He began the day with a National League-best 238 ERA+ and 2.4 bWAR. Senga's strong start comes one day after David Peterson tossed a complete-game shutout against the Nationals. The Mets' rotation was looking sharp, leading the majors in ERA (2.84). Now the team will be without its ace as he recovers from his hamstring ailment. Payten threatens axe on 'bullied' Cowboys
Todd Payten has warned he could swing the axe after admitting North Queensland were bullied by the Sydney Roosters as they fell to a second straight thrashing. Payten described the Cowboys' 42-8 loss as looking like boys against men at times, as his team conceding four tries in the space of 10 minutes in the second half. Halfback Tom Dearden also conceded he was "horrible", backing up four days after winning his first State of Origin game wearing the Queensland No.7 jersey. Semi-finalists last year, the Cowboys are now in an almighty rut. Payten's men have won just one match since Magic Round, dropping five and drawing one to Penrith. Asked after the loss to the Roosters whether changes were possible, Payten indicated it was on his mind. "We'll be considering it, definitely, off the back of the past few weeks," he said. "We'll have a look at what is underneath and then reassess and get to work." Payten also refused to use the Origin period as an excuse, with the Cowboys having four players coming in and out of camp in the past month. "It's not an excuse, far from it," Payten said. "Not a contributing factor one little bit. "You look at some other teams across the competition (who) have handled it perfectly and we have done so in the past. So it's irrelevant. "It's disappointing, and far from good enough. "We got bullied, it was men against boys there for a little bit and that's concerning." Payten's threat came as Dearden also made a scathing assessment of his own performance, which included conceding an intercept pass for a Mark Nawaqanitawase try. The Cowboys had balls hitting the ground in attack, while Dearden was responsible for five missed tackles. "The body felt good, I was ready to go," Dearden said of backing up from Origin. "I'm really disappointed in my performance. I thought I was horrible tonight."

Supercars leader calls for Darwin format reversal
Broc Feeney pulled off an unprecedented clean sweep to claim the Darwin Triple Crown, but a contentious rule change could cheapen the feat. With his dominant victory in race 19 of the Supercars season on Sunday, the Triple Eight prodigy became the first driver to win all three races at the Top End event since the three-race format was first introduced there in 2016. The trophy had been previously won by Scott McLaughlin - who succeeded in 2019 by claiming both races and a pole when the event was switched to a two-race format - and by Jamie Whincup, who won in 2020 when Supercars awarded the victory on round points during the COVID-19 pandemic. But this season, event organisers changed the format so the Triple Crown would be awarded to the driver who won the most points across the weekend, even if they did not sweep all three races. That change was made redundant by Feeney's hat-trick. But he called for the format to be reverted back to its previous structure to preserve the difficulty which makes it such a sought-after prize. "I just remember so clearly watching Scotty win it back in 2019 and just how hard it was to, I suppose, win it in its natural way," Feeney said. "I think it should probably go back to the old way. I don't think it should be the round winner, I think it should be either all three races or two races and the shootout. "Obviously Bathurst and the championship are the main ones, but I think just how difficult this one is to win, it was right up the top of my list. "So I've obviously had a good run here the last couple of years, and just really wanted to tick that box. So to do it this year is pretty awesome." After securing a maiden podium with a third-place finish in Saturday's second race, the 19-year-old went one better by coming second to Feeney on Sunday. His confidence boosted, Allen is setting his sights on hauling in Feeney and his Red Bull teammate Will Brown to score his first race win. "To get some podiums this early is pretty cool. But yeah, it's not time to back off now. It's full steam ahead because we've got some Bulls to catch and they're still pretty quick," he said.
