Scientists make unexpected discovery about health impacts of common recreation equipment: 'The first reliable data'

Microplastics have become a major environmental concern, and scientists have long known that the wear and tear of vehicle tires is a significant contributing factor in the amount of microplastics found in the environment.
However, other tires, such as bicycle tires, have not been studied to see how much microplastic they release. Now, though, the University of Bayreuth in Germany has completed such a study.
Researchers from the University of Bayreuth recently released their findings from a study on the amount of microplastics released from the abrasion of bike tires — specifically mountain bikes.
Researchers already knew that 35% of microplastic pollution in Germany comes from vehicle tires, with around 11 grams of microplastics released for every 62 miles driven. What they didn't know was how much mountain bike tires contributed.
According to their findings, the news is good and bad. Mountain bike tires do contribute to microplastic pollution, but these tires only contribute less than 1% of the total, releasing approximately 3.5 grams every 62 miles ridden.
Doctoral researcher Fabian Sommer, who led the team, said, as relayed by Phys.org: "Our study provides the first reliable data on the amount of tire abrasion from mountain bikes under real-world conditions. The results show that while mountain bike tires release microplastics directly into nature, the amount is significantly lower compared to motorized vehicles."
Microplastics continue to be found nearly everywhere, whether in water, soil, food, household products, air, or even the human body.
Science has linked these tiny particles to a host of adverse health effects in people, including inflammation, hormone disruption, and cancer.
Microplastics also harm the environment, as they release chemicals into the water, soil, and air. Research has shown that microplastics may negatively impact animals, particularly fish, which is doubly concerning when considering the risks of people consuming contaminated meat.
Dealing with microplastics will take time, but governments, companies, and individuals have taken steps in the right direction.

The Microbead-Free Waters Act was passed in 2015, which banned the packaging, manufacturing, and distribution of certain cosmetic products using plastic microbeads.

New research that was recently published in Geophysical Research Letters looks at how this current, which acts as a vital barrier, "will respond to changes in wind, heating, and meltwater under climate change." "We found meltwater from Antarctica is speeding up the current, known as the Antarctic Slope Current," the authors of the study wrote in an article for the Conversation, per "And it's set to become even faster by mid-century." "A faster current could be more unstable," added the researchers. "This means eddies of warm water could eat away at Antarctica's ice, posing a major concern for the stability of Earth's climate system." The team of scientists warned that "humanity must act now" to protect this natural buffer, which is helping to keep Antarctica's ice shelves from vanishing. The study's authors point out that in vulnerable low-lying coastal regions, even a minimal sea-level rise of just a few centimeters can double the likelihood of flooding events. Rising sea levels allow saltwater to encroach further inland, contaminating freshwater supplies and impacting crop yields. A new open-source software is making it easier than ever to monitor heat-trapping gases emitted by livestock, according to an Elsevier report published on While much of the heat-trapping gas in the world is produced by burning fuel, another significant chunk of it comes from animal agriculture. As part of their digestive processes, animals like cows burp out methane, a potent planet-warming gas. Exactly how much methane is produced and what factors change that amount is obviously difficult to track. Animals are often outdoors or in partially enclosed spaces, and their gases easily escape. But a device called GreenFeed helps track these emissions in real time. It uses feed pellet rewards to encourage livestock to put their heads inside the device, then tracks the gases they produce. Then, users have the opposite problem: There is a lot of data about every burp produced by every individual animal. "The sheer volume of data produced by GreenFeed systems can be really overwhelming," said Guillermo Martinez-Boggio, the lead author of the new article, per Elsevier. "We set out to create an open-source tool that simplifies this process, making it more efficient and reproducible, and flexible to the variety of situations in which these systems are used." That tool is greenfeedr, based on the idea of "doing as little as possible by hand and as much as possible with functions." It helps download and sort through data from GreenFeed systems, compiling summaries about various types of data like an animal's total daily visits, how many pellets it's eaten, and the gas produced. "We wanted the tool to be as versatile as possible, so it was designed to be used with all livestock species and housing systems, including freestall, tiestall, and pasture-based," said Martinez-Boggio. The result makes it easier to understand how animals are producing heat-trapping gases, and that will make it easier to deploy solutions like this feed additive that cuts back on the methane in cow burps.
