Pakistan violated spirit of Indus Waters Treaty by inflicting 3 wars: India at UN

Time of India24-05-2025

NEW DELHI: Pakistan has violated the spirit of the
Indus Waters Treaty
(IWT) by inflicting three wars and thousands of terror attacks on India since the treaty came into effect in 1960, India said at the UN to counter what it described as disinformation being carried out by Pakistan over New Delhi's decision to put the IWT in abeyance.
India had always acted as a responsible upper riparian state, Indian ambassador P Harish said, adding it was Pakistan that had continued to violate the 1960 treaty. He also highlighted several aspects to expose disinformation and explain why India has finally announced that the treaty will be in abeyance "until Pakistan, which is a global epicentre of terror, credibly & irrevocably ends its support for cross-border terrorism".
"In the last four decades, over 20,000 Indian lives have been lost in terror attacks," he said.
India: Pak has consistently blocked any changes to infra & provisions
First, Indian ambassador P Harish said, India had entered into the treaty 65-years-ago in good faith and, as the preamble of the treaty says, in spirit of goodwill and friendship. "Throughout these six-and-a-half decades, Pakistan has violated the spirit of the treaty by inflicting three wars and thousands of terror attacks on India.

Thousands of Indians lost lives in terror attacks, "the most recent of which was the dastardly targeted terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam last month," Harish said, adding that Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism in India sought to hold hostage the lives of civilians, religious harmony and economic prosperity.
Second, Harish said that in these 65 years, far-reaching fundamental changes had taken place not only in terms of escalating security concerns through cross-border attacks, but also growing requirements for producing clean energy, climate change and demographic change.
"However, Pakistan has continued to consistently block any changes to this infrastructure, and any modifications of the provisions, which is permissible under the treaty.
In fact, in 2012, terrorists even attacked the Tulbul navigation project in J&K," he said.
Third, he cited Pakistan's reluctance to discuss modifications of the treaty on several occasions in past two years. "Pakistan's obstructionist approach continues to prevent the exercise of full utilisation of legitimate rights by India," he added.

'Khamenei has not authorized...': What Tulsi Gabbard said in March about Iran's nuclear program

Tulsi Gabbard comes under fire for changing her statement on Iran. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has now blamed the media for taking her March statement out of context as President Donald Trump now publicly rebuked her for not alerting the administration enough about Iran's nuclear capabilities. On the first occasion, the president said he did not care what Gabbard said in March and in another statement, he said Gabbard was wrong. Tulsi Gabbard made a complete U-turn amid her position being threatened over the Iran-Israel war, saying the "dishonest media" intentionally took her testimony out of context and spread fake news to manufacture division. Gabbard said America has intelligence that Iran is at the point that it can produce a nuclear weapon within weeks to months, if they decide to finalize the assembly. Did Tulsi Gabbard say the same thing in the testimony? Tulsi Gabbard testified at a House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence hearing for the annual threat assessment of the US Intelligence Community (IC). She said the IC sees China, Russia, Iran and North Korea engaging I activities that could challenge US capabilities and interests. On Iran, she said that the country is seeking to expand its influence in the Middle East, despite the "degradation of its proxies and defenses during the Gaza conflict". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "Iran has developed and maintains ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and UAVs, including systems capable of striking U.S. targets and allies in the region. They've shown a willingness to use these weapons, including during a 2020 attack on US forces in Iraq and in attacks against Israel in April and October 2024. Iran's cyber operations and capabilities also present a serious threat to US networks and data." Then Tulsi Gabbard categorically went on to say that the IOC continues to assess that Iran is "not building a nuclear weapon and Supreme leader Khomeini has not authorized the nuclear weapons program that he suspended in 2003". "We continue to monitor closely if Tehran decides to reauthorize its nuclear weapons program. In the past year, we've seen an erosion of a decades long taboo in Iran on discussing nuclear weapons in public likely emboldening nuclear weapons advocates within Iran's decision-making apparatus. Iran's enriched uranium stockpile is at its highest levels and is unprecedented for a state without nuclear weapons. Iran will likely continue efforts to counter Israel and press for U.S. military withdrawal from the region by aiding, arming, and helping to reconstitute its loose consortium of like-minded terrorists, actors, which it refers to as its 'Axis of Resistance.' Although weakened, this collection of actors still presents a wide range of threats including to Israel's population, U.S. forces deployed in Iraq and Syria, as well as U.S. and international military and commercial shipping and transit," Gabbard said.
