Erne Boxing Club host memorable night of international boxing
Last Friday, a packed crowd at the Westville Hotel in Enniskillen enjoyed a thrilling and unforgettable evening of international boxing.
The event, hosted by Erne Boxing Club in collaboration with the IABA (Irish Athletic Boxing Association) High-Performance Unit, saw Ireland's Elite Boxing Team face off against a visiting team from Austria.
Despite some last minute withdrawals due to injuries and travel issues there were ten highly entertaining contests that included seven international contests and three supporting contests featuring Erne boxers.
The night's action got underway with Erne's Ben Millar taking on Jack Willis (Gateway Sligo BC) in a 50kg Youth Contest.
Millar made a fast start peppering his opponent with hard jabs to take control of the contest.
After landing with unanswered combinations on several occasions he forced his brave opponent to take two stsnding counts and the referee to halt the contest in round two, handing Millar an RSC victory.
Next up saw home favourite Cameron Suttle against the heavy-punching Alex McAleer (Ballyshannon BC) in a 67kg Senior Welterweight contest.
Suttle established control of the contest working away behind the jab and held a solid guard to defend against his opponent's soild counter attacks.
The good jab work from Suttle bloodied his opponent's nose and a good volley of punches forced his opponent to take a standing count.
McAleer fought back gamely and had a good spell on top but Suttle rallied again forcing further nose damage and his opponent to take another standing count. The contest was subsequently called off afterwards handing Suttle an RSC win in round three.
In the final supporting contest, Erne's Anthony Malanaphy took on Naoise McManus (Dumsna BC) in another 67kg Welterweight contest.
McManus had beaten Anthony's clubmate Cameron Suttle earlier in the season and so he was on something of a revenge mission.
For two rounds Malanaphy showed his subline skillset peppering McManus with his eye-catching long-range punches and his trademark uppercuts when in close.
However, in round three Malanaphy opted to stand and trade with McManus who got inspired by his success and it resulted in an uncomfortable last round for the home favourite. However, Malanaphy dug deep and deservedly collected a unaminous 5-0 points win.
This contest was followed by some traditional Irish Dancing from talented dancing sisters Chloe and Charley Gilmurray who entertained the visitors and large crowd.
Following the parade of the two international teams, rising country singing star Cara McGillion sang great renditions of Danny Boy and Amhrán na bhFiann.
Ireland's Gavin Ryan beat Michel Marinkovic (Austria) in the opening international contest at Bantamweight and Lee McEvoy followed that with a victory over Eric Banas at Featherweight.
Next up was the main attraction Rhys Owens v Mery Ayan (Austria) in a Lightweight contest.
Owens received a rapturous applause on his way to the ring and started the contest a bit nervously. Ayan took advantage and got the better of the early exchanges.
However, Owens warmed into the contest and once he found his range he started to land with hurtful body shots.
The opening round was very close but some sharp three-punch eye-catching combinations from Owens would have seen him edge the first session.
In round two, Owens was buoyant and was now relishing the occasion. He applied constant pressure and although his Austrian opponent fought back gamely he was simply being outgunned and overwhelmed by the Erne starlet.
Quality Owens combinations that mixed shots from body to head force Ayan to take a standing count and on resumption there was no let up.
Owens knew he had his man going and continued to apply pressure and after landing with another hurtful combination the contest was called off handing him an RSC victory in round two.
The large crowd raised the roof as Owens hand was officially raised in victory.
There were a further two wins and two reverses for team Ireland in the final four team contests as the hosts romp to a 5-2 victory in the team match.
Luke Hall (Ireland) beat Alfred Nana (Austria) by unanimous decision at Welterweight.
Matthew McCole beat Rahman Altamirov (Austria) by RSC in round three at Light- Middleweight.
Jason Clancy (Ireland) lost to Lucky Aimufa (Austria) by Split Decision 3-2 at Light-Heavyweight.
Brian Kennedy (Ireland) lost to Micael Derouchie (Austria) by Unanimous Decision 5-0.
Event organiser and Erne Boxing Club Head Coach Sean Crowley said: "It was a fantastic night for the club and a great night for Fermanagh. We have so many people and businesses that supported us to thank that we don't know where to start.
"Our four boxers that competed tonight boxed absolutely brilliantly and impressed in front of the National coaches.
"To get four wins out of four and especially to see Rhys win in an international vest in front of the home fans made all the stress and many tireless hours of unpaid work worthwhile for me, the club coaches and all the volunteers that made this event possible.
"We did a great job of showcasing the beautiful county of Fermanagh and with further support could bring a major international competition like a European Championship in the future- that would be a great way to relaunch the new Lakeland forum when it reopens.
"I just want to finish on behalf of the club by thanking all those key people that helped out, we are indebted to you."

Notre Dame is projected to land 2026 WR Kaydon Finley, who is on a Texas official visit
Typically you don't see recruiting insiders projecting for a team other than the one they are currently visiting, but that's exactly what happened for Notre Dame and 2026 wide receiver Kaydon Finley. The son of former NFL tight end Jermichael, a 6-foot and 200-pounder is currently on his official visit to see the Texas Longhorns, but that didn't stop On3's Max Torres (Thanks to Ryan Fravel for the news on social media) from putting in a prediction for the Irish to land Finley. This is the final scheduled visit before he makes his July 4th commitment, so his recruitment is looking like it's trending positively to the Irish. Notre Dame is coming off a week where it added three new commitments, offensive tackle Grayson McKeogh, cornerback Khary Adams and safety Joey O'Brien. There are two other current verbals at wide receiver, Bubba Frazier and Dylan Faison, and there are more than a few prospects still highly-considering joining the pair. Obviously Finley, along with Devin Fitzgerald and Brayden Robinson, it very much looks like Notre Dame will be adding multiple more receivers to its 2026 recruiting class.

(Photo by Cooper Neill/Zuffa LLC) One of the late additions to the UFC 317 pay-per-view card was a bantamweight battle between Payton Talbott and Felipe Lima. The fight came together in mid-June for the June 28 fight card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. NV. (Photo by Cooper Neill/Zuffa LLC) Payton Talbott (9-1) joined the UFC in August 2023 when UFC CEO Dana White awarded him a deal for his decision win over Reyes Cortez Jr. on a Dana White's Contender Series card. With his win that night at the UFC Apex, Talbott moved to 6-0. At the time, White said, "Payton broke the record for significant strikes tonight, I think it was 145, in that ball park, I don't have the official number (145 of 282). "This kid is an absolute predator. He keeps moving forward. He seems unfazed by by everything that happened. He plays the mental game. He's talking to his opponent… Payton hit him (Cortez) with everything tonight. Big shots, combinations, leg kicks, head kicks, you name it. He's only 24 years old. 'If this kid can keep his head together, I can't wait to see him at 27' Talbott shined in his first three UFC bouts, picking up stoppage wins over Nick Aguirre (submission), Cameron Saaiman (TKO), and Yanis Ghemmour (KO). In his third outing with the promotion, the UFC decided to give Talbott a test, matching him up against a veteran competitor in Raoni Barcelos. Barcelos was a +675 betting underdog to Talbott, who was listed at -1050, at UFC 311. Barcelos picked up eight takedowns and nearly 10 minutes of control time and added two submission attempts during the matchup. Sure, Talbott had the better striking, but he had no answer for Barcelos's focus on getting the fight to the mat. Talbott appears to be skilled and coachable. At UFC 317, he gets the opportunity to show how he has improved his overall MMA game. Talbott does not turn 27 until September 9. More fight during the UFC Fight Night event at Amalie Arena on December 14, 2024 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC) Felipe Lima (14-1) joined the UFC in June 2024 as a late replacement for the injured Melsik Baghdasaryan against Muhammad Naimov. Lima, a former Oktagon MMA bantamweight champ, was training for a defense of that title when he accepted the call from the UFC to compete at 145. Lima ended Naimov's six-fight winning streak via submission on that night, earning a 'Performance of the Night' bonus in the process. Lima followed that with a December 2024 decision win over Miles Johns on the UFC Tampa card. Lima lost his first professional fight in 2015, but the 27-year-old is undefated since then with 14 consecutive wins. UFC 317 Fight Card Betting Lines And Movement: Payton Talbott Vs. Felipe Lima When BetOnline first published the odds for this matchup, Lima was the -125 betting favorite over the +105 Talbott. Those odds have shifted in favor of Lima, who is now -190, while Talbott is a +165 betting underdog. UFC 317 Fight Card Tale Of The Tape: Payton Talbott Vs. Felipe Lima Age: 26 Height: 5' 10' Reach: 70' Stance: Switch Age: 27 Height: 5'6' Reach: 68' Stance: Orthodox UFC 317 Fight Card Predictions And Picks: Payton Talbott Vs. Felipe Lima TAMPA, FLORIDA - DECEMBER 14: Felipe Lima of Brazil reacts after a unanimous-decision victory ... More against Miles Johns in a featherweight fight during the UFC Fight Night event at Amalie Arena on December 14, 2024 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC) Talbott has a lot to prove on Saturday. He went from being a +1050 favorite in his last fight to a +165 underdog in this matchup because Barcelos showed that the young man was not a well-rounded competitor. It's now up to Talbott to show that he deserved the hype he had heading into that Barcelos matchup. As for Lima, this is a fight that could allow him to steal some of the shine that Talbott had on him. Lima is a well-rounded fighter who has good wrestling and strong striking. Plus, the wins he has picked up in the UFC are better than the wins Talbott has. From what we've seen, Lima is the better all-around fighter in this matchup, and unless Talbott has done a 180 on his grappling, Lima should get the decision win at UFC 317. We will have more on the UFC 317 Talbott vs. Lima bout as fight night nears, as well as live results, reactions, highlights and more for the UFC 317 pay-per-view card on fight night.

Is Penn State losing recruiting ground to Notre Dame?
First Grayson McKeogh, now Tyler Merrill. Those are two offensive linemen that the Nittany Lions have let slip through their grasp and have ended up with the Fighting Irish. Thus, this continues a slippery slope for the Nittany Lions as they continue to lose traction not just within their state, but in the Big Ten and on a national stage as well. For the past couple of weeks, it has just been continuous bad news on the recruiting trail as more and more top recruits eschew the Nittany Lions in favor of the men from South Bend. McKeogh and Merrill specifically were Pennsylvania guys and two of the better O-linemen in the cycle. To make matters worse, another Pennsylvania product in safety Joey O'Brien is said to be leaning in favor of the Irish. His five-star status as well makes it ever more painful, as Penn State fans are sure to notice the lack of one in this cycle thus far. As the recruiting process grows ever more tense, look for this burgeoning recruiting rivalry to continue as Notre Dame gets ever more aggressive. They are already making moves in the 2027 cycle, extending an offer to a Penn State commit in the past couple of days. Thus the question arises: is Penn State rapidly losing ground in its own state, and will they be able to recover before it's too late?
