Sammy Hagar: Alex Van Halen Is 'Angry' Because 'I'm Out Doing It' and 'He Can't'
The post Sammy Hagar: Alex Van Halen Is 'Angry' Because 'I'm Out Doing It' and 'He Can't' appeared first on Consequence.
Sammy Hagar and Alex Van Halen haven't been on speaking terms in 21 years, and the Red Rocker has a couple theories as to why the drummer is upset with him, with one being jealousy.
Hagar recently released the new single 'Encore, Thank You, Goodnight,' inspired by a dream he had about Eddie Van Halen. The singer and his all-star backing band of Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Kenny Aronoff are set to kick off their 'Best of All Worlds' Las Vegas residency on Wednesday night (April 30th) at Dolby Live at Park MGM (pick up tickets here).

Back in 2022, Hagar revealed that he'd been completely cut off by his onetime Van Halen bandmate, saying, 'Alex has got a stick up his ass about something with me still.'
Alex then completely ignored the Van Hagar years of Van Halen in his 2024 memoir, Brothers, with Hagar insisting that not mentioning that era of the band was 'blasphemy' to Eddie Van Halen's legacy.
Now, in a new conversation with Rolling Stone, Hagar said, 'I dreamt about Alex the other night, man. It was crazy. And it was so friggin' real. I was saying, 'What are you pissed off at me about, man? What the fuck? Now just tell me what your problem is. What did I do? Just tell me.''
When the interviewer suggested that the feud may be because Hagar detailed 'the worst period of Eddie's life' in his own 2011 memoir, Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock, Hagar dismissed that notion.
'I don't think that's it,' responded Hagar, 'And I've had this conversation with a few people, including [former Van Halen manager] Irving Azoff. I've asked him, 'What's the problem?' And some people have said to me, 'Oh, Cabo Wabo. At one time, Van Halen, when you built it, you guys were all partners in that. And then they didn't want it anymore when it was losing money, and they gave it to you, and you turned it around and made hundreds of millions of dollars on it. And they're angry. Alex is angry about that.''
He added, 'To that I said, 'How the fuck could they be angry about that? They gave me the damn thing, they walked out on me, left me with it. And they made me indemnify them in case I got sued and lost everything. They made me sign off big time.' And I'm going, 'I hope it's not that.''
For his part, Hagar thinks it has more to do with the fact that he's still recording music and playing shows, while Alex has been relatively inactive for the past decade or so.
'I think Al's angry because I'm out doing it, and [bassist] Mike [Anthony] and I are out doing it, and he can't,' surmised Hagar. 'He's not a singer. He's not a guitar player. He is not really a band leader. And he seems like he doesn't want to play drums or can't play drums anymore, and he can't go write a new record. Alex wasn't the songwriter in the band. He was the drummer. Eddie and I wrote the songs. Dave and Eddie wrote the songs, and so we can go out and do them.'
He continued, 'I think that really bothers him that Mike and I are still out there doing it. I would feel bad. If I put myself in his shoes, I would feel terrible if I couldn't do it anymore. But I'm the happiest guy out of all of them. That pisses people off in itself. Being too happy, people don't like that.'
The interviewer then mentioned that Alex's bitterness could do with recent health issues that have prevented him from performing, as well as Eddie's passing in October 2020. Hagar answered, 'Yeah, I'd say so. And I'm okay with it. Al, you're fine. Just leave me alone. I'll leave you alone. Everything's good. I'm making you money, by the way, Al. I'm out there selling Van Halen records and keeping the name alive, keeping the music alive.'

Bellinghams do battle and subs stay indoors as Club World Cup warms up
A FAMILY AFFAIR Following the second weekend of Copa Gianni, Fifa were eager to flag up a number of fraternal firsts. In scoring for Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid, Jude and Jobe Bellingham became the first brothers in history to score in the same tournament – 'We're 1-1 now,' honked Jude after his goal – while Francesco Pio Esposito became the first player to replace his brother when he came on for his Inter debut in place of elder sibling Sebastiano in the win over Urawa Red Diamonds. Meanwhile in Atlanta, the United Arab Emirates vice president and Manchester City chief suit, Sheikh Mansour, emerged with family bragging rights after his club's reserve team trampled Al Ain, who are presided over by his older brother Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, into the dirt. Advertisement Somewhat bizarrely, the weekend also marked the first occasion a team's substitutes elected to stay in the dressing-room for the first half of one of their games after the players named on the Dortmund bench for their win over Mamelodi Sundowns proved they are no match for mad dogs or Englishmen by opting to leave their uncovered touchline seats vacant in favour of kicking back in the comparative cool of the stadium bowels to stave off the unpleasant sound and smell of their own skin slowly cooking in the midday Ohio heat. 'Our subs watched the first half [on TV] from inside the locker room to avoid the blazing sun at TQL Stadium – never seen that before, but in this heat, it absolutely makes sense,' wrote the Dortmund comms team on some Social Media Disgrace or other. Given their laissez-faire attitude to player welfare that practically borders on the downright negligent, we can almost certainly expect a diktat ordering substitutes from all teams to sit in their official Fifa-designated pitchside seats or risk incurring a hefty fine and the tournament's organiser's not inconsiderable wrath. The searing mid-afternoon heat of Orlando may well create a shimmer in the air on Thursday, when Juventus and Manchester City are scheduled to go toe-to-toe in Group G, with the likely prize of getting RB Salzburg instead of Real Madrid in the last 16 for whoever wins. A draw will be enough for Juventus to top the group although given the strong likelihood that both sets of players will finish their match burnt to a crisp and delirious from heat exhaustion, you could send them out to face Snow White, all seven dwarves, Donald Duck, Goofy and Mickey Mouse from the well known nearby theme park and not one of them would even notice, let alone care. Having shuffled his pack like a Vegas croupier and fielded a completely different starting 11 to City's opener against Wydad, Pep Guardiola seems pretty relaxed about who his side face in the knockout stages. 'What's important is we're in the next phase,' he parped, before ordering a tanker full of factor 50 for the trip to the furnace that will be the Camping World Stadium on Thursday afternoon. QUOTE OF THE DAY Coleen is a princess and her parents are queen and king, and Wayne is a warrior. They get together, they split up, she's broken-hearted and he goes on a quest to find the ring and re-propose to her. The theatre says they've never done anything like this before' – Helen Serafinowicz, the writer behind TV hit series Motherland, has announced her next project: 'The Legend of Rooney's Ring', a Game-of-Thrones inspired summer pantomime about Wayne and Coleen Rooney, loosely based on a rumour that the couple once had a big argument in the car which ended with Coleen hurling an engagement ring out of the car, which led to Liverpool locals taking to the streets with metal detectors. Not the theatre we expected, but the theatre we need. What was Cazorla doing 31 years ago? He was coming through the Real Oviedo academy. 'At 40 years old I think this is the greatest thing I've ever experienced,' declared the married father of two. 'I've been lucky enough to experience great things with Spain and with the clubs that I've been with, winning many trophies, but nothing compares to this … I grew up here, I have my friends, my family. Sunday's second leg at Salernitana, which was scrapped when home fans repeatedly threw smoke bombs and seats on to the pitch, is widely expected to result in a 3-0 (5-0 agg) victory for Sampdoria, who only earned a spot in the relegation playoff after Brescia were docked points for financial irregularities. 'We know very well that the third division is very complicated,' sobbed Salernitana chief suit Maurizio Milan. 'We'll start again immediately, learning from our mistakes.' "Call Her Alex" Docuseries Most Interesting Moments
Alex Cooper of Call Her Daddy recently released her Hulu docuseries Call Her Alex, chronicling the podcaster's journey from childhood bumps along the way to her rise and success. For those unfamiliar, Call Her Daddy has consistently ranked in Spotify's Top 5 of most listened to podcasts — and is the most listened to podcast on the platform by women. In the docuseries, it dives into the juicy lore of CHD — the early days, the fractures, the rise, and where it is now — answering all the details fans and curious pop culture minds would have on the making of Call Her Daddy. Here are 20 behind-the-scenes moments that really stuck with me: Initially, Alex thought podcasting was for the "older generation that loved radio," especially with the endorsement from her dad, Bryan Cooper. "My dad was like, 'Ooh, there's this thing called podcasting now.'" When she thought about it more, she asked herself, "As a Zillennial, what would I want to listen to in a podcast format?" Back in Boston, during her time on her soccer team, she gleaned that women had different comfort levels in talking about sex. "I really noticed this divide in my locker room of women who would openly talk about sex and their dating life, and then women who were terrified to talk about it," said Alex. "I knew I needed to take a risk." Once Alex realized she had a topic in mind for the podcast, she called up her mom, Laurie Cooper, a psychologist, to say that she was writing content that was "super sexual" and "salacious." She said her mom answered back, "Great! Do it!" Originally, Call Her Daddy had two hosts — Alex and Sofia. They were roommates, and like Alex, Sofia was comfortable talking about sex and wasn't afraid to dive into the details. Alex's previous stint as a YouTuber, and her experience editing vlogs, shaped the podcast's distinct style and sound. The "very choppy" and "very fast-paced" editing gave CHD a unique rhythm. That, plus the sexual content, Alex said, was the recipe for success. "It really was a formula that wasn't being done," she said. In the docuseries, Alex shares that she still edits her podcasts today. Call Her Daddy was able to scale thanks to bro-media company Barstool Sports when its founder, Dave Portnoy, DM'd her. He had come across an episode she posted on her Instagram. What caught his interest was the frank and open way the hosts talked about sex and dating. "I always say Barstool Sports is supposed to be what guys talk about in the locker room," said Dave. "They were doing it from a female perspective." The initial deal CHD signed with Barstool Sports was a three-year contract with a $70,000 salary plus bonuses. The podcast's name came from a hoodie Alex bought in college that had the word "DADDY" splashed across it. "All the guys would always be like, 'Why do you have daddy on your shirt?'" Alex recalled in an interview shown in the series. "Because I am," she answered. Former Barstool Sports CEO Erika Ayers Badan said that because of the salacious content, finding advertisers was "hard," but the brand was a "juggernaut" in merchandise. According to the series, it sold millions of dollars in Call Her Daddy merch. While the podcast was growing in popularity for its frank content, Alex said that the version of herself at the time was a "character" and that it was "the most heightened version" of herself. "I would leave the studio, and my voice would completely change." Despite Call Her Daddy becoming a massive success, there were times of "low moments" and "self-doubt" for Alex, especially due to the sexual nature of the show. She said, "Extended family members thought I was so fucking crazy. Relationships ended in my family because my parents had to stick up for me and say like, 'Oh, she hasn't lost her mind, I promise.'" Her mom, Laurie, said she would hear things like, "She was raised right. She's a good kid. Does her grandmother know?" Laurie countered, "My mother would have 100% endorsed this. That's the one thing. Tough relationship, but my mother was an out-there feminist." Alex said of her upbringing, "I was fortunate to grow up in a household where it was normalized to speak your mind, so I was like, 'give me the microphone, I'll say it.'" Eventually, behind-the-scenes, there were fractures growing between the co-hosts. "It was the classic, you think you see something online, and people genuinely believe we were like sisters," said Alex. "But our relationship was so awful." Circling back to their initial contract with Barstool, the podcast grew, bringing in revenue and millions of listeners. The co-hosts agreed that they "absolutely deserved more money." But they were locked into their deal, plus Barstool owned their IP. A new deal was negotiated where if they stayed another year, they'd get their IP back. "We started to see the unraveling of their friendship. I think they became more aware about how different the two of them were in what they wanted in it, from it, and out of it," said Erika, the former CEO of Barstool Sports. According to the docuseries, Sofia did not want to take the deal while Alex did. "So I stayed," she said. When it came time to host Call Her Daddy on her own, serendipitously, Alex was back at her parents' house. It was the pandemic, and she recorded her first solo episode in their basement, where her earliest passion for creating content was nurtured. The evolution of Call Her Daddy, shifting from a frank and sex-positive podcast to a nuanced version of it that still includes sex but now also includes discussions on mental health and well-being, started when Alex wanted to drop the persona she had developed earlier. "I didn't want to be this character anymore," she said, and when she mentioned that she was in therapy, it was an opportunity for the podcast to shift in a new direction. Alex said, "I understand it may not be revolutionary for someone to say, but the way I was speaking for 86 episodes like nothing affects me, 'I don't get upset. You can't penetrate my emotions. I am made of steel,' so the concept of 'Call Her Daddy' girl, being like, 'I'm in therapy. I'm an emotional wreck.' Everyone's like, 'Alex?'" The podcast now has episodes that range from solo episodes to interviews with celebrities on mental health, dating, career, and life. Notably, even former Vice President Kamala Harris stopped by the CHD studio to talk about women's reproductive rights, career resilience, and challenging norms. Alex said, "I genuinely wanted to start talking to other people." And most recently, Katy Perry came on and made waves when she spilled on what she'd give a blowjob for. Today, Alex has created her own media platform, the Unwell Network, where she hopes to "uplift" the next up and coming voices. Following her success, her dream now would be if one of the creators on her network would get their own massive deal like the one she made headlines with, with SiriusXM. After leaving Barstool Sports, Alex's Spotify deal was for $60 million for three years. Her recent SiriusXM deal is a multi-year agreement worth up to $125 million. What a ride!
