Ex-IT officer pleads guilty to posting offensive comment on Facebook
IPOH: A former information technology (IT) officer at a local media company pleaded guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of making an offensive comment on social media with the intent to hurt others' feelings, in February this year.
Ariff Zulkarnain Ameer Mohd Imam, 50, entered the plea after the charge was read before Judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi.
According to the charge, he allegedly used the Facebook application through the account 'Ariff Zulkarnain Mohd Imam' at the link https://www.facebook.com/ariff.zulkarnainmohdimam to knowingly make and initiate a transmission using a communication service.
He was accused of posting a comment on an article titled 'Khatib enggan baca teks khutbah disediakan keterlaluan, jangan dibiarkan - Sultan Nazrin', published on the Facebook page of Harian Metro at the link https://www.facebook.com/share/1BZZzGje6L/?mibextid=wwXlfr.
The offence was allegedly read at the Complaints Counter of the Central Police Station at the Ipoh District Police Headquarters at about 5.45 pm on Feb 25.
For the offence, he was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and punishable under Section 233(3) of the same Act, which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000 or imprisonment for up to two years, or both. An additional fine of RM5,000 for each day or part of a day the offence continues after conviction may also be imposed, upon conviction.
His lawyer, M. Saravanan from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK), appealed for time or a later date to allow the accused to raise funds in case a fine is imposed, noting that the offence was serious as it involved the Sultan of Perak.
Deputy public prosecutor Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani said he had no objection to sentencing being set for a later date, but offered bail of RM30,000 with two sureties. He also requested that the accused report to the nearest police station once a month and surrender his passport to the court.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Hidayu Zakaria also conducted the prosecution.
Saravanan then appealed for a lower bail amount, saying the accused was 50 years old, his wife was unemployed, and he had lost his job at the media company as a result of his actions. He added that the accused had no stable income and pledged to comply with all imposed conditions.
The judge then set July 30 as the sentencing date and fixed bail at RM10,000 with one surety. The accused was also ordered to surrender his passport to the court by noon on June 20, until sentencing is concluded.

Seven arrested in Serdang police ops on burglars and snatch thieves
SERDANG: District police have solved a house break-in and a series of snatch thefts with the arrest of seven suspects in two separate cases. In the first case, two men with criminal records were detained over a burglary in Bandar Putra Permai here. Serdang OCPD Asst Comm Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the victim left his home at about 7am on June 7. "When he returned at 4pm the next day, he discovered his house had been broken into. "The house was in shambles and his car and valuables were missing," he told a press conference at Serdang district police headquarters on Monday (June 23). ACP Farid said the losses, including the car, two laptops, sunglasses and cash, came up to about RM42,000. "An investigation led to the arrest of two men, aged 38 and 44, in Klang on June 18. "We recovered the stolen items as well," he said, adding that the suspects had been remanded until today and police would apply for an extension. In the second case, ACP Farid said a snatch theft gang consisting of three men and two women, believed to be responsible for 39 cases in Selangor, was busted in an operation codenamed Ops Sentap Jay. "The suspects aged 20 to 30 were detained on June 19. "We believe they are responsible for cases in Serdang, Kajang and Subang Jaya," he said. Several items were seized, including a motorcycle, helmets, a laptop, a pawn shop receipt and jewellery, he added.

Kelantan sees sharp drop in smuggled firearms cases after border crackdown
KOTA BARU: The number of firearm smuggling cases into Kelantan from a neighbouring country has seen a significant decline, dropping more than sixfold following intensified border enforcement since December last year. State police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said this marked a positive outcome from joint operations by the police and General Operations Force, particularly in districts close to the border. He said police have seized nine firearms, including seven imitation weapons, in several operations across the state since the beginning of this year. In comparison, police seized 64 imitation firearms and 16 genuine ones throughout last year. "Since the intensified enforcement, we have seen a significant drop in firearms seizures. "This indicates that our current border control measures are effective, and those involved in smuggling activities are no longer bold enough to bring illegal firearms into Kelantan," he said. Mohd Yusoff said most of the seizures this year took place in Pasir Mas and Rantau Panjang. "Most of the weapons were seized from those involved in drug-related and other criminal activities," he said. He believed that firearms smuggled from the neighbouring country were once popular among locals due to their easy availability and significantly lower prices. It is understood that genuine firearms can be obtained from across the border at a much cheaper price compared to the local black market, where such weapons are sold for between RM3,000 and RM5,000 each. As for imitation firearms, prices in Malaysia typically range between RM200 and RM500 per unit, while in the neighbouring country, they can be bought for as low as RM50 to RM100 each.
