Reddit is the 2nd most-cited source in Google AI Overviews, but that might not mean much for its bottom line

Reddit's relationship with Google is complicated.
The social media forum, which went public last year and is under pressure like never before to attract advertisers and turn a profit, has recently enjoyed priority status on Google Search.
And now that Google has launched its AI Overview, a natural language synopsis of search results at the top of the page, it seems its preference for citing Reddit remains.
Analytics firm Semrush shared data this month on how AI-powered search is affecting traffic. It found that Reddit is the second most-cited website in Google AI Overviews, following Quora.
"Quora and Reddit users often ask and answer niche questions that aren't addressed elsewhere. Making them rich information sources for highly specific AI prompts," the study's authors wrote. "Reddit may also perform well because Google has a partnership with Reddit and uses Reddit data to train its systems."
Reddit and Google entered a partnership, worth a reported $60 million, in 2024 that allowed Google to train its AI models on Reddit's content. Google said the deal would "facilitate more content-forward displays of Reddit information."
All of this has helped Reddit increase its traffic over the last year, which might entice more advertisers.
That traffic, however, is largely coming from so-called logged-out users, meaning they aren't account holders at Reddit and are unlikely regular visitors. Analysts at Redburn called much of Reddit's growth"misconstrued."
"Accelerated user growth has been driven predominantly by logged-out users who arrive on the platform largely via Google Search," the Redburn analysts wrote in March. "These users are much less valuable to Reddit as they are typically just looking for an answer to a query and thus spend little time on the platform."
And while Google AI Overview might often cite Reddit as a source, the way it displays search results in a natural language summary means many searchers will be less likely to click through to Reddit itself.
Reddit's stocks fell in May after Google launched its new AI Mode, as concerned analysts said the new feature would likely decrease traffic to Reddit.

Windows parental controls are crashing Chrome — here's the workaround

Windows 11's Family Safety feature is supposed to block certain websites from children, but apparently it's also been causing issues with Google's Chrome browser, a (vastly more popular) competitor to Microsoft's own Edge. The problem first surfaced on Windows on June 3, per The Verge, when several users started noticing they couldn't open Chrome or their browser would crash randomly. Restarting their computer or reinstalling Chrome didn't fix the issue, and other browsers like Firefox and Opera appeared unaffected. On Monday, a Google spokesperson posted in the company's community forum that it had investigated these reports and found the issues were linked to Microsoft's new Windows Family Safety feature. This optional feature is primarily used by parents and schools to manage children's screen time, filter their web browsing, and monitor their online activity. Curiously, the bug has been going on for weeks now, and Microsoft still hasn't issued a patch. 'We've not heard anything from Microsoft about a fix being rolled out,' wrote a Chromium engineer in a bug tracking thread on June 10. 'They have provided guidance to users who contact them about how to get Chrome working again, but I wouldn't think that would have a large effect.' While this issue could be an innocent bug, Microsoft has a history of placing annoying hurdles between Edge and Chrome to entice users to stick with its browser. So anytime a technical snafu makes Chrome run worse on Windows PCs, Microsoft understandably gets some serious side eye. Thankfully, there seem to be two ways to get around this bug while we wait for Microsoft to issue a fix, and they're both fairly simple. The most straightforward is to turn off the "Filter Inappropriate Websites" setting. Head to the Family Safety mobile app or Family Safety web portal, select a user's account, and choose to disable "Filter inappropriate websites" under the Edge tab. However, that'll remove the guardrails on Chrome and let your child access any website, including the ones you were trying to block in the first place. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. If you want to keep the guardrails on and still use Chrome, some users reported that altering the name in your Chrome folder (to something like Chrome1, for example), got the browser to work again even with the Family Safety feature enabled.

Photos of luxury superyacht that sank off Sicily, killing 7, being lifted from the ocean

PORTICELLO, Italy (AP) — A British-flagged luxury superyacht that sank off Sicily in 2024, killing U.K. tech magnate Mike Lynch and six others, has been recovered from the sea. The 56-meter (184-foot) Bayesian was lifted by salvage crews near the port of Porticello, where it sank on Aug. 19 last year during a violent storm. A floating crane platform will move the Bayesian to the Sicilian port of Termini Imerese, where a special steel cradle is waiting for it. The vessel will then be made available for investigators to help determine the cause of the sinking. ___ This is a photo gallery curated by AP photo editors. Error! A First-Time Buyer Was Shocked When Their Escrow Shot Up. Turns Out, A Fixed Rate Doesn't Protect You From Tax And Insurance Hikes

When a Reddit user and their husband bought a home in 2021, they felt confident with their $1,250 monthly mortgage payment. It was a fixed-rate loan, and they had budgeted carefully. But that confidence quickly turned to confusion when their payment jumped to $1,600. At first, the couple thought their private mortgage insurance had increased. 'We've been in contact with our lender and they said the only way to get off the PMI is to get a home appraisal above $331K,' the person wrote in the r/FirstTimeHomeBuyer subreddit recently. So, her husband paid $500 for an appraisal that did meet the target value. But the lender said it was invalid because the appraiser wasn't on their approved list. They were told they'd need to pay $650 for another appraisal through the lender's channels. Learn how you can Redditors were quick to point out what was really going on. 'Your PMI does not go up. Only your escrow for insurance and taxes can go up,' one top commenter said. Another added, 'Interagency appraisal guidelines prohibit financial institutions from using appraisals ordered directly by the borrower.' The original poster later confirmed what many had suspected: 'I asked our mortgage lender to send our last few escrow reports and it was in fact our hazard insurance causing the increase, not our PMI like we originally thought.' The takeaway was this: even with a fixed interest rate, escrow payments can shift drastically because of tax reassessments and insurance hikes. 'Be prepared for your escrow—property taxes and insurance—to go up even if you got a 'fixed rate' mortgage,' the OP warned. One person said their mortgage payment rose by $800 due to an insurance lapse and property tax increase. Others explained how taxes often spike after a property changes hands, since previous owners may have had exemptions or lower assessments. 'My homeowners insurance went from $1,400 to $2,800 over a three-year span,' one person said. 'I shopped and found insurance with the same coverage for $1,300 again, only to be told they wouldn't cover the house due to them feeling the roof was old. I was forced to spend $12,000 for a new roof in 30 days.'The good news is that there are options. Homeowners can shop around for better insurance rates, dispute property tax assessments, and ask lenders for a broker price opinion instead of a full appraisal to remove PMI. 'I requested the PMI to be removed and was given two options,' one person explained. 'I went with the BPO and it was only $140. Ten days later, my PMI was removed.' Others suggested reviewing escrow statements annually and proactively paying shortages to avoid ballooning payments. 'If you pay the $1200 shortfall, you will owe $100 more a month. If you don't pay it off all at once, you will owe $200 more a month because you're paying the shortfall plus the extra $100 monthly,' one commenter warned. As for the original poster, she ended the thread with a lesson for others: 'As much as some people like to act like home buying and everything involved is intuitive and common sense, it's really not. So I hope you all can learn from our boo boo.' Read Next: Maximize saving for your retirement and cut down on taxes: .
