The assisted dying debate has been politics – but not as we know it

The House of Commons is a place defined by confrontation where political battles play out and engage more actively with their constituents.
But the atmosphere could not have been more different on Friday, as those on both sides of the assisted dying debate listened respectfully, almost solemnly, to one another in the final hours before .

When the voting was completed and the result imminent, a long and profound silence fell over the House.
From the press gallery, it seemed that the entire Commons was holding its breath together, collectively aware of the historic moment we were all about to witness, whatever the outcome.
The woman at the centre of this seismic moment, the bill's sponsor Kim Leadbeater, braced herself as the result came in.
Many months of pressure and responsibility appeared to be lifted from her shoulders as the win was announced and colleagues gathered to commend her efforts.
Throughout the process this been politics but not as we know it, with party divisions put aside and MPs asked to search their own consciences and come to their own conclusions.
It has created a more collaborative atmosphere in parliament and encouraged MPs to engage more actively with their constituents.
In the end there was still anger, frustration and disappointment among those who were against the law change, either on principle or because they believed the legislation was flawed.
And of course, politics will go back to being combative and voices in the Commons will be raised once again.
But for a brief period, historic change was calmly ushered in.
The challenge for the proponents now is to take the legislation through the next phases and deliver it with the same smoothness and determination.

Dozens seek help at rail station mental health hub

Dozens of people have been accessing mental health support at a railway station centre in its first month. "The Hub" was launched by West Midlands Railway (WMR) and charity Rethink Mental Illness at Wolverhampton Station, in May. It is providing people with support and guidance, as well as offering a space for local organisations to run pop-ups and events. "The Hub has been extremely successful in its first four weeks of opening," said Samantha Passmore, Wolverhampton customer experience manager for WMR. "We have had dozens of people enquiring about advice and additional support, and more and more charities are requesting to use the facility, which was our vision from day one. "We look forward to seeing the Hub go from strength to strength over the coming months." Organisations already using the site have included employment support service Thrive into Work, and Children in CueSports - which provides pathways into sport. "In just a few weeks, we've seen how much of a difference it can make to have an accessible space where people feel able to reach out for help," said Kirsten Rose, service manager at Rethink Mental Illness - which maintains and staffs the site. "It's a great example of what's possible when organisations come together to put mental health at the heart of local communities." The initiative is backed by Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation – the lead provider of mental health and learning disability services in the region. Its chief nurse Carolyn Green, said they had seen increased interest in their services since the hub opened. "This includes our 24/7 mental health helpline, our sanctuary hubs, the Black Country Recovery College, and free suicide prevention training for families and carers," she said. "Having somewhere that signposts to these services in a visible, public location really matters and we believe it is, and will continue to be, life-saving." Why Taxing the UK's Rich Less May Make Sense

One of the first things Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves did was to make the global assets of those living in the UK but domiciled elsewhere for tax purposes (the 'non-doms') subject to UK inheritance tax. Those people have responded to that incentive exactly as one might expect. They are leaving. Exact numbers aren't available, but many financial advisers will tell you of their fast-vanishing high-net worth clients—heading for the United Arab Emirates, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Malta and maybe even the US (there are some 70,000 applications for information on the new ' gold Trump card ' visa, apparently). Henley and Partners, a global relocation company, backs this up. It reports that inquiries on how to become a resident elsewhere were three times higher in the first three months of 2025 than the same period in 2024.
