Continuity Biosciences Acquires Focal Medical to Advance Targeted Drug Delivery for Pancreatic Cancer
BRADENTON, Fla. , June 4, 2025 /CNW/ -- Continuity Biosciences, LLC, a developer of advanced drug delivery technologies, announced today the acquisition of Focal Medical, Inc., a North Carolina -based biopharmaceutical company pioneering site-specific chemotherapy using iontophoresis. The acquisition represents a key step in Continuity's strategy to become a leader in device targeted therapeutics for intractable solid tumors.
Founded by leading scientists and clinicians, Focal Medical has developed a proprietary platform that delivers chemotherapy directly to tumors using iontophoresis —this minimally-invasive technique utilizes a mild electrical current to drive therapeutic compounds into targeted tissues. This method enhances local drug concentration while minimizing systemic toxicity, a critical need in the treatment of pancreatic and other solid-tissue cancers.
Focal Medical's lead product candidate, an iontophoresis device directed gemcitabine therapy for pancreatic cancer, has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) through an Investigational New Drug (IND) application. Phase 1b clinical trials are expected to begin later this year.
"This is a transformative milestone for Continuity Biosciences," said Ramakrishna Venugopalan , PhD, MBA, Chief Executive Officer of Continuity Biosciences. "Focal Medical's approach to localized drug delivery aligns perfectly with our vision to improve bioavailability, reduce systemic exposure, and deliver better outcomes for patients. We are thrilled to bring this promising platform into our portfolio and into the clinic."
Through the acquisition, Continuity Biosciences obtains Focal Medical's entire patent estate, iontophoresis technology platform and specialized equipment, scientific know-how, and licensing agreements with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . In addition, key scientific staff and leadership from Focal will join Continuity, further enhancing its internal capabilities. A dedicated research and development facility in Cary, NC that supports ongoing platform and pipeline advancement is also part of the acquisition and will be expanded to support other delivery platforms.
Visionary Founders Driving the Innovation
Focal Medical was co-founded by:
Jen Jen Yeh , MD , a surgical oncologist and professor at UNC-Chapel Hill with joint appointments in Surgery and Pharmacology. She serves as assistant dean of translational research in UNC School of Medicine and associate director of translational research in UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Yeh is widely recognized for her expertise in pancreatic cancer and translational oncology.
Joseph DeSimone , PhD , an award-winning chemist, entrepreneur, and academic, currently serving as the Sanjiv Sam Gambhir Professor of Translational Medicine and Chemical Engineering at Stanford University . He is globally known for his breakthroughs in materials science, nanomedicine, and advanced manufacturing, including 3D printing.
Their iontophoresis system is designed to deliver gemcitabine, an FDA-approved chemotherapy agent, directly into pancreatic tumors. Traditional systemic administration of gemcitabine is often limited by poor tumor penetration and significant toxicity. Focal's approach bypasses those limitations by delivering the drug directly to the tumor site with high precision and minimal systemic toxicity.
"After nearly a decade of R&D, we are excited to join the Continuity Biosciences family," said Tony Voiers , Acting CEO of Focal Medical. "We are grateful to our founders, scientific collaborators, and investors who have helped us reach this pivotal point. Partnering with Continuity ensures that this novel therapy moves forward into the clinic where it has the potential to help patients facing one of the deadliest cancers."
This acquisition reinforces Continuity Biosciences' commitment to building a diverse portfolio of clinically meaningful drug delivery platforms and signals a decisive move toward becoming a clinical-stage leader in site-specific therapy.

Why Centrus Energy Stock Leaped 5% Higher Today
Centrus Energy (NYSEMKT: LEU) attracted the right kind of energy on the stock exchange Friday. The company's shares closed that session 5% higher, after it published news of an important contract renewal. That pop looked particularly impressive when matched against the S&P 500 's (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) trajectory, which dipped into the red with a 0.2% decline. An energetic extension Before market open that morning, Centrus divulged that the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) exercised its option to extend the company's contract to produce for it high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU). The extension now runs through June 30, 2026. HALEU is a type of nuclear fuel that has a level of enrichment considered most suitable for current nuclear reactor technology, including the small nuclear reactors (SMRs) that have recently come into vogue. In what's probably not a coincidence, Centrus' latest news comes barely a week after its business partner Oklo was tapped to build and operate a nuclear plant to supply heat and electricity to an Air Force base in Alaska. The two companies have a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in place for Centrus to supply HALEU for Oklo's projects. The trend is its friend In its press release on the contract extension, Centrus added that the DoE holds options for further extensions to the existing contract. It could opt to keep Centrus's HALEU supply going for as much as a further eight years. So it's not only good news that a major business for the company has a longer runway, but it's looking for more as time goes by. Assuming President Trump's embrace of nuclear energy remains in place (and possibly outlives his administration), Centrus will be in a very good position indeed. Iran-Israel Conflict Escalates: Boon for ExxonMobil's E&P Business?
The West Texas Intermediate crude price is currently nearing the $75-per-barrel benchmark, representing a significant improvement from $60.79 on May 30, thanks to the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. This is a boon for Exxon Mobil Corporation 's XOM exploration and production (E&P) activities, as upstream operations are positively correlated with oil prices. Crude price data are as per In other words, with ExxonMobil generating the majority of its earnings from upstream operations, almost 88% in the first quarter of 2025, the rise in oil price is a positive development for its E&P business, aiding its bottom line. Delving into the large integrated energy player's upstream business, XOM has a strong footprint in the oil-rich Permian, the most prolific basin in the United States. With operations spread across the low-cost basin, the high oil price will likely generate significant cash flows for XOM. To describe XOM's strong focus on the Permian, the energy giant acquired Pioneer Natural Resources, with integration progressing well, and the company has revised its annual synergy estimates upward from $2 billion to $3 billion for the first decade. Thus, strong Permian operations amid the favorable crude pricing environment are aiding ExxonMobil. Are CVX & BP Also Gaining From High Oil Prices? Both Chevron Corporation CVX and BP plc BP generate significant earnings from their upstream operations, and hence, they benefit from higher oil prices. In the Permian, Chevron's operations cover approximately 1.8 million net acres within the sub-basins of Delaware and Midland. Being a major player in the region, CVX's breakeven costs are also low. Hence, it can generate handsome cashflow from a high crude pricing environment. In the first quarter of this year, CVX mentioned that Permian primarily aided its production volumes. BP also has a solid upstream operation, comprising a top-tier oil and gas business in attractive basins. BP is also a low-cost producer. The British energy giant claimed that it has been able to keep the cost of producing oil very low. Thus, BP is among the lowest-cost producers in the industry to capitalize on increasing oil prices. XOM's Price Performance, Valuation & Estimates Shares of XOM have gained 7.9% over the past year, outpacing the 3.7% improvement of the composite stocks belonging to the industry. From a valuation standpoint, XOM trades at a trailing 12-month enterprise value to EBITDA (EV/EBITDA) of 7.06X. This is above the broader industry average of 4.26X. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for XOM's 2025 earnings hasn't been revised over the past seven days. XOM stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
