
I've passed this Bay Area town 1,000 times. Here's what happened when I finally dropped in
I've passed Crockett so many times in the last half-century, that I'm convinced it can't live up to the legend built up in my mind.
It appears like a model train village while crossing west over the Carquinez Bridge. And in a region where change is constant, this town of 3,642 residents never seems to budge: The ancient brick C&H Sugar factory keeps chugging along. There are a hundred trees for every house. I feel like I can hear the Crockett birds singing from inside my automobile.
'It's like this little town that's lost under the bridge,' said Samantha Bartlett, who co-owns a whimsical Crockett antique store called Cat Vintage.
After more than 1,000 Crockett drive-bys for childhood Tahoe trips, Vallejo family hangouts and Davis college visits for my son, I finally stepped inside the city limits on a recent Friday. And I'm happy to report that the one stoplight town (literally) is worth the offramp detour, and a sneaky-great day trip for Bay Area residents who love to bike and ride transit.
My rule on these Bay Area downtown visits is to reach the destination from my home in Alameda without using a car. Crockett requires three modes of transportation: a water shuttle to Oakland, Amtrak to Martinez and a short but challenging bike route mapped out by my friend Javier Panzar through the Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline.
I alternate between cursing and praising Javier, as each turn in the road seems to reveal another big hill, followed by another unforgettable sight: old cemeteries, majestic hawks and ruins of the Port Costa piers. That waterfront town used to handle most of the grain passing through the Bay Area. Now it has 193 residents. (And 192 of them seem to be displaying Pride flags.)
The downhill ride into Crockett gives a taste of the charm to come. Revival Coffee is a welcoming community space nestled in the town's old mortuary chapel. An octagonal American Legion memorial is covered with flags. The Crockett Museum, housed in the former train station, has C&H history, tributes to service members, mounted yearbook photos going to the 1920s and the first Crockett school bell.
Inside, I meet volunteers Dick Boyer and Erin Brosnan, the perfect representation of Crockett's key demographics. Boyer is an initially-prickly-but-plugged-in local (John Swett High School class of '55) who warms quickly. Brosnan moved here from Oakland in 2005, and fell in love with the small-town feel. In Crockett, she says, you can join a trash pickup with your kids and see the impact of your work. 'You really feel like you can be part of something. I love being around that.'
The train stop in the early 1900s served two towns, Valona and Crockett, which had an unhealthy rivalry. There were two high schools, two mortuaries and two movie theaters — which sometimes would show the same picture, even though they were just blocks apart. (Crockett apparently won this battle. Valona is now an unincorporated community in the hills.)
C&H started in 1906, which Boyer says was good for the town. The first plant manager was civic-minded, putting in a swimming pool, community center, rifle range and anything else people needed.
'He learned a long time before he started here, if you keep your workers happy, you aren't going to have any problems,' Boyer says.
The Carquinez Bridge's debut in 1926 changed Crockett's look, but not the working class atmosphere. The newer suspension bridge is named after Al Zampa, an iron worker who built the biggest Bay Area bridges, joining the 'Halfway to Hell Club' when he fell off the Golden Gate Bridge into a safety net that put him in a body cast for 12 weeks. ('If I'm so lucky,' he reportedly said at the hospital, 'then what am I doing here?')
Two blocks inland from the factory, I reach the main drag, Second Avenue, which, like every other street in this town, is on a hill.
Locals recommend Lucia's sandwich spot — 'pronounce it loo-chee-uhs' I'm warned twice — over the more well known Dead Fish restaurant on the other side of the freeway. As I eat my fancy club sandwich — there's homemade aioli and hints of lemon juice in the greens — it reminds me of my stop at Provisions in Vallejo. More great chefs should get tired of the big cities and set up their dream restaurants in old downtowns with much lower rents.
I cruise around on my bike, marveling at the old and new. Someone has set up a batting cage in the old brick fire house. Public bocce ball courts are well groomed and ready for action. A model train society roosts in the top floor of the union hall. Toot's Tavern (established in 1901 by one Toots Donato Pezzuto) is filled with locals, and one white terrier.
I settle into the Crockett Library to check emails, and it's the most endearing stop yet. The 1,000-square foot craftsman house has just two tables, one occupied by Mark the librarian. 'We have sticker making on this table for the kids at 2:30,' he says. 'We might have to move you to a computer desk.'
There's a surprising amount to do in town, much of it free. The library has a Dungeons and Dragons night. Toot's hosts local bands. A skate shop sponsors DJ sets and art nights. If I ever get sent to witness relocation, I'm moving here.
The last stop of my visit is Cat Vintage, founded by New England native Samantha Bartlett and her sister Jessie. The interior is well-organized with antique clothes, old Sunset magazines, a giant glass puma and hundreds of VHS tapes. ('The Secret of NIMH' is playing on a small 1990s television.)
'California was kind of a culture shock when I moved here,' Samantha says. 'It was so different from the little towns I lived near in Maine. Crockett felt like a little bit of home for me.'
I grab a VHS copy of 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' and a 1970s Dynamite magazine with a teen Mark Hamill on the cover, and wonder why I didn't take the offramp here 35 years sooner.

A TikTok user has gone viral and sent thousands of people into laughter after sharing a video of herself bringing 200 tortillas onto a plane in Texas. TikToker Anna Jones recorded the video in the early morning hours of June 14. As she stood in line at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, she captured footage of her fellow unsuspecting travelers. "All these people and no one knows I have 200 HEB tortillas in my backpack," Jones wrote, referring to the grocery supermarket chain H-E-B. Once she made it onto the plane, the bag of tortillas was quite the heavy lift. 'I struggled to get that in the overhead carrier, but it went OK,' she said. USA TODAY contacted H-E-B and the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport about tortillagate. Here is the story on tortillagate and the laughter that ensued once social media users got wind of it. What's with all the tortillas? Jones is 17 and lives in Nashville, Tennessee, she told USA TODAY on June 20. She had previously flown to Texas to visit her father and the University of Texas at Austin campus, she said. Because there is no H-E-B near her in Tennessee, Jones makes sure she stocks up when she visits Texas, she said, adding that she and her father have done this at least three times. Jones is part of a family of six, and they go through tortillas quickly, she said. Last time, her dad got her about 200 to 300 tortillas, and they lasted a few months, she added. 'We bring them home, and we can freeze them, and we just use them until they run out,' Jones said. 'They normally last about two months.' Jones said she usually always gets flagged by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for carrying tubes of toothpaste that are too big, but she wasn't stopped for her tortillas. 'I just went on through,' she said. 'Nothing happened. It was pretty obvious that it was tortillas. This is kind of normal for them, I guess.' Southwest Airlines, which Jones flew with, states that TSA has a list of approved items travelers can put in checked or carry-on bags. Bread and other solid food items are permitted, per the database. 'TSA officers may instruct travelers to separate items from carry-on bags such as foods, powders, and any materials that can clutter bags and obstruct clear images on the X-ray machine,' TSA said on its website. 'Travelers are encouraged to organize their carry-on bags and keep them uncluttered to ease the screening process and keep the lines moving.' H-E-B: 'Gotta keep those in the carry on' Jones said once she makes it home to Tennessee with her H-E-B tortillas, she likes to make them with pork, lime crema, and also quesadillas with beans, cheese and chicken. When H-E-B heard about the post, the company chimed in: 'Gotta keep those in the carry on. Don't want to chance them getting misplaced.' Jones replied and let the company know she could always use more tortillas. As of June 20, she hasn't heard back. The social media response her post garnered has been fun to be part of, Jones said. 'I immediately texted my dad because he grew up in Austin, so he loves H-E-B,' she said. 'He texted all of his friends from high school. I thought that was pretty funny.' She also said it has been funny seeing folks debate about the quality of tortillas and what makes them tasty. Some TikTokers shared their own stories about traveling with food. 'I had 75 pounds of food in a suitcase to NYC,' wrote one user. 'I need yall to restock the cold/hot bags please. Going on a run again this month.' 'Don't know how we should behave': Is the US South LGBTQ friendly? LGBTQ+ travelers are taking extra precautions, especially in the South, due to a perceived increase in hostility. Resources like IGLTA, Everywhere is Queer, and LGBTQ+ friendly travel advisors can help travelers find inclusive spaces and plan safer trips. Despite challenges, experts and travelers emphasize the diversity of the South and encourage researching destinations and engaging with local communities. When Madeline Gregg and her wife, Bryn, drive to Florida for vacation, they consider more than just road safety. In certain parts of the South, the 33-year-old certified sex educator said, it feels less risky for her to get out and pump gas while her wife, who is transgender, stays in the car. 'We don't even have to talk about it anymore,' she told USA TODAY. 'It's just assumed.' The couple has also learned which businesses have family or gender-neutral bathrooms conveniently located along the route from their home in Louisville, Kentucky, including in states with restrictive bathroom laws. Even in the Melbourne, Florida, area – where they typically visit three to five times a year and Bryn's family has a beach house – they are cautious about showing public displays of affection. 'We want to enjoy where we are, and if we draw more attention to us, we probably won't enjoy it as much,' she said. As a native Kentuckian, Gregg is accustomed to those kinds of precautions. However, she is among a number of people who have found traveling in the American South more fraught as the federal government targets the LGBTQ+ community. Even within the region, though, LGBTQ+ visitors' experiences can vary widely. Here's what to know when considering a trip to the South. 'I don't know how we should behave' While the South is varied and diverse, the region tends to be less LGBTQ+ friendly than some other parts of the country. Six of the lowest-ranked states on Out Leadership's 2025 State LGBTQ+ Business Climate Index, which gauges the impacts of government policies and attitudes towards the community, were in the Southeast. Gregg said there were previously some areas where the pair felt they had to be more aware during their Florida road trips, but after the 2024 presidential election, it was 'vastly, vastly different.' 'People were more inclined to say things,' she said. 'A lot more stares.' She remembers a passerby even made a disparaging remark about gender identity while they were walking their dog in Florida. The couple has only been to Melbourne in the last six months. The Greggs are not the only ones. Omie, who makes travel content with his fiancé, Davey, under the moniker Traveling Boyfriends, similarly feels a 'level of paranoia' when visiting the region more now than ever before. The 34-year-old said the couple visits the South at least once a year for work or to see friends and family. They asked to be identified by only their professional names due to privacy and safety concerns. They spend much of their time abroad, but are based in Chicago when they're in the U.S. 'Driving from Atlanta to Charleston, you go through places that you're just like, 'I don't know how we should behave,'' he said. 'Like, you have to almost act as friends. You have to look over your shoulder in some ways.' Davey echoed that. The 37-year-old, who is originally from England, said visiting New York comparatively 'feels very, very open, very accepting.' 'It doesn't feel to me like that mentality changes depending on whatever the political sway of the country is at that moment,' he said. 'The South is just not as familiar and feels more uncomfortable. It may be (that) part of that, if I'm being honest, is a bit of ignorance, because I don't know it as well … but also because ... there are stories almost every day of some level of more integrated hate around these parts of the U.S.' Tips for traveling in the South Even so, there are plenty of inclusive spaces to be found. 'The South is incredibly diverse and very nuanced,' said Andy Knowles, a travel advisor with Fora Travel based in North Carolina. He said travelers have to make their own risk assessments before visiting a destination, and recommended doing 'as much research as you feel comfortable doing' on the front end. Getting to know the legislation on the books is a good idea. 'You can't dictate the entire state's sentiment based on their laws, but I think that that is a pretty good starting point,' Knowles said. A queer-friendly travel advisor can help walk clients through the planning process, too. John Tanzella, president and CEO of the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA) suggested connecting 'with local LGBTQ+ groups or trusted travel networks, and choose accommodations and services known for their inclusivity and care. This way, you can focus on enjoying your trip and feeling truly supported.' Travelers can find a database of accommodations on IGLTA's website. Knowles also noted that Expedia has an 'LGBTQ welcoming' search filter. Gregg recommended reaching out to tourism boards or following them on social media. 'The whole reason that they're there is because they want people to come, so they want you to feel as safe as possible in their city,' she said. She and her wife have also used the Everywhere is Queer app to find welcoming businesses. Once there, they have asked for their recommendations, as well. LGBTQ+ friendly destinations in the South Knowles said there are some 'really magical destinations for LGBTQ, travelers' in the region, including popular cities like Key West, Miami and Atlanta. 'New Orleans is, generally speaking, very diverse, very LGBTQ friendly, even in a state that's typically not,' Knowles added. He also recommended Savannah, Georgia, which has a thriving arts scene and more of a gay presence than some other Southern cities. Omie and Davey enjoyed a May trip to Charlotte, North Carolina. Tanzella also highlighted places like Tampa and Dallas, which 'have built warm, welcoming communities with year-round events and genuine allyship.' He advised travelers to look for 'signs of genuine commitment' from destinations, such as those that support LGBTQ+ events and community organizations and have clear anti-discrimination policies. 'Truly inclusive destinations don't just talk the talk during Pride Month, they show up year-round,' he said in an email. Still, during an April trip to San Francisco, Gregg was struck by the affectionate public displays of couples and the widespread use of rainbow flags. In contrast, she and her wife took down their pride flag back home in Louisville because passersby yelled slurs when the couple sat on the porch. 'It's extremely normal for us, but until you experience traveling to other places, you don't really realize how in the closet and how quiet you have to be in public in the South,' she said. She emphasized, however, it's important not to generalize, and attitudes and experiences can vary widely – even by neighborhood. 'I will say that the South has its stereotypes,' added Knowles, who was born and raised in California and moved to Asheville about three-and-a-half years ago.
