Upgrades for Nangka longhouses

The ruai and tanju (communal areas) of all 34 longhouses within the Nangka state constituency will be upgraded, says Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.
The Sarawak Education, Innovation and Talent Development Deputy Minister said works would be carried out in stages in line with available funding.
'We will proceed gradually,' said Dr Annuar, who is also Nangka assemblyman.
'There are 34 longhouses in Nangka, and I will endeavour to upgrade the ruai and tanju bit by bit.
'This is because my yearly allocation is only about RM5mil, which must be distributed according to needs across the entire constituency,' he said during the 2025 Gawai Ngabang Programme at Rumah Maxwell in Oya Road, Sibu.
Dr Annuar noted that three longhouses in the area still lacked access to clean water due to their remote location, and said this issue would be addressed in stages.
Commenting on the Gawai Dayak celebration, Dr Annuar said the festival was a testament to Sarawak's harmonious multi-ethnic society.
'Gawai Dayak is not only celebrated by the Dayak community but also embraced by all ethnic groups in Sarawak.
'This is what makes Sarawak special. We must safeguard this spirit,' he said.
During his visit, Dr Annuar also handed over loudspeakers, an audio system and fire extinguishers to residents of Rumah Maxwell. — By ANDY CHUA

Gawai Dayak 2025 parade in Kuching brings Sarawak's spirit to life with colour, culture and unity
KUCHING, June 21 — More than 90 contingents and 12 decorated floats, featuring over 3,000 participants from the Orang Ulu, Bidayuh, and Iban communities, brought vibrant colour and cultural significance to the Gawai Dayak 2025 Parade, much to the delight of both locals and visitors. The day began with the traditional Orang Ulu 'Upacara Mamat' ceremony, held at the Tun Jugah Building lobby. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg officiated the ritual, which was conducted by the Sarawak Council for Customs and Traditions and led by Pemanca Tony Kulleh from the Belaga Kenyah community. The ritual sought blessings and permission from ancestral spirits to commence the parade. Following the ceremony, Abang Johari and other dignitaries joined the 1.2-km parade from Tun Jugah Building to the Kuching Waterfront. SUPP Piasau distributes 300 food baskets to Kg Pasir families celebrating Gawai

MIRI (June 16): The Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Piasau mobile service team distributed 330 food baskets in Kampung Pasir, Lutong on Sunday to families celebrating Gawai Dayak. The team included SUPP Piasau secretary Councillor Kelvin Chia, branch Youth chief Councillor Leslie Lau, and Councillor Lisa Yu. Lau, who represented branch chairman Datuk Sebastian Ting, who is Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I, said the community welfare programme sought to extend festive greetings and well wishes to the families. Each food basket contained 10kg of rice, 2kg of cooking oil, two packets of sugar, and two packs of biscuits. 'The programme not only enhanced the festive spirit but also served to strengthen the bonds between the government and grassroots communities, especially within Sarawak's multicultural society, where mutual respect and communication are vital. 'SUPP always upholds the principle of being close to the people and providing services to the community, particularly in efforts to improve the quality of life for the rakyat,' he said. He also stressed that it is vital to build a community that does not discriminate based on race or religious background, to provide a sense of belonging to everyone in the region.
