The state's largest annual education and career fair has attracted over 50 exhibitors, including companies, public and private higher education institutions, financial aid providers, technical schools, and government departments and agencies, said Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn. The Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister said this year's SCaT Fair, with strong support from Social Security Organisation (Socso) in managing industry participation, will feature walk-in interview sessions for job seekers. 'A total of 1,561 job vacancies across various sectors, including construction, manufacturing and more, will be offered,' he told a press conference at BCCK here today. Sagah said Socso will also organise a Career Exploration Session aimed at empowering future job seekers, especially students, to develop clear career pathways and understand the evolving demands of the job market. He said SCaT Fair will serve as a one-stop centre for students, youth, parents and the community at large, to provide comprehensive information on education and career opportunities, as well as details on educational financial aid available from participating agencies. He added that the fair also aims to enhance the employability and marketability of graduates and youth, as well as empower them to make informed decisions about their futures and nurture interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) among schoolchildren. 'New to this year's fair is the Oil & Gas Zone, managed by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), which will highlight the participation of Petronas, ENEOS Xplora, PTTEP, Mubadala, Brooke Dockyard, Petra Energy and many more,' he emphasised. In addition to employment opportunities, Sagah said the fair will also feature a series of exciting concurrent side programmes, namely the Sarawak Initiative Information Wall, Sarawak Mega Quizzes Challenges, STEM Playground, Skills Master Competition, Sarawak Blockchain & Crypto Day 2025, Sarawak Rocketeer CAN-SAT Challenge, Planetarium Sultan Iskandar (PSI) Dome, Kid's Fun Zone, Youth Icon Speaker Corner and SCaT Kamboh Stage. He encouraged all Sarawakians to participate in the various events and exhibitions at the upcoming SCaT Fair 2025. 'For visitors seeking employment or planning to further their studies, I urge you to take full advantage of the consultations offered by esteemed institutions and participating companies at this fair. Seize this opportunity to learn and apply what you gain,' he said. The 11th edition of SCaT Fair is jointly organised by the ministry, the Workforce Development Unit of the Premier's Department, Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (Tegas), Socso and Petros. It will be launched by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Since its inception, the SCaT Fair has become a highly anticipated event. Last year, it was successfully held at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) in Kuching and, for the first time, at the Indoor Stadium in Sibu ― attracting a total of 29,068 visitors, with 20,240 in Kuching and 8,828 in Sibu. Over 300 students visit STEM Catalysts Raspberry Pi 2025 tour in Betong

Rentap (left) listens to a briefing by a facilitator. KUCHING (June 18): More than 300 students, mainly from Primary 5, Primary 6, and Form 1, have visited the STEM Catalysts Raspberry Pi 2025 tour in Betong, said Sarawak Skills. In a press release today, Sarawak Skills said Betong was the seventh out of 18 stops for the statewide tour. STEM Catalysts is a touring science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) carnival organised by the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development to spur pupils' interests in STEM, particularly those from rural primary schools. The 2025 edition features the use of coding and Raspberry Pi to make use of STEM knowledge, including the use of Raspberry Pi to control hydraulic systems to lift very heavy objects guided by Pascal's Law. Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development Deputy Minister Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, who is Layar assemblyman, officially opened the event at the Betong District Education Office yesterday. He said STEM awareness and interests must be inculcated in students as early as possible to get them ready for the technology driven and competitive world. 'Therefore, I hope events such as STEM Catalysts can be carried out more frequently and with participation from parents and the public. We need everyone's participation to nurture our young ones,' he said. Students observe one of the STEM exhibits. STEM Catalysts is one of the many initiatives coordinated by the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development to achieve the target of increasing STEM enrolment in Sarawak from 30 per cent to 60 per cent, to produce enough talents for the state. The event involved staff and students from Sarawak Skills and University of Technology Sarawak, as well as STEM communicators from the Sarawak Science Centre. Persatuan Kebajikan Rolf Schnyder, a philanthropic organisation which provides education support to children, also organised a mini coding competition. The tour will move on to Lubok Antu and Simunjan, followed by Kanowit, Song, and Kapit next week. It is expected to cover 100 schools by the end of the month. Graduates urged to embrace challenges, not be too selective in job hunt

Dr Annuar addresses the audience during the event. – Photo by Galileo Petingi KOTA SAMARAHAN (June 18): Graduates should not be overly selective when searching for a job, as challenges in the workplace are vital for both personal and professional growth, said Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee. Speaking at the Talent Recruitment and Career Exhibition (TRACE) event held at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) here yesterday, he acknowledged the difficulties graduates face in securing employment, but urged them to focus on gaining experience rather than prioritising convenience. 'Many people choose jobs based on location, often wanting to stay close to their hometowns. However, I believe that the further you go, the more challenges you face — and life without challenges holds no meaning,' he said. Dr Annuar, who officiated the event on behalf of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, also cautioned against frequent job hopping solely for salary increment, emphasising that expertise in a field requires time and dedication. 'Yes, money is important, but the experience gained in a job is irreplaceable. Constantly switching jobs means repeatedly starting from scratch. 'To become a specialist, one must commit to a role for at least five years before considering a career change or pursuing further studies,' he explained. Moreover, Dr Annuar highlighted the pressure graduates face upon completing their degrees, particularly in dealing with student loans, such as the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN). 'The moment a graduate finishes their studies, the first question they are asked is, 'Have you found a job?' 'It is a stressful situation, especially when financial obligations come into play,' he said. He also expressed hope that TRACE would provide valuable guidance to students as they navigate their journey toward employment. dr annuar rapaee education fresh graduates job opportunities

Abang Johari: Future of employment lies in adaptability, courage

Dr Annuar (right) visits one of the exhibition booths at the event KUCHING (June 17): The future of employment is no longer about who is the smartest on paper, but rather about who is the most adaptable, the fastest learner, and the bravest in taking on new challenges, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. In saying this, he asserted that to achieve the status of a developed nation, human capital plays a crucial role as the primary driver of economic development and growth. If human capital development is not given due attention and appropriate investment, the nation's economy will not grow sustainably, he added. 'Therefore, it is vital for us to cultivate a workforce that is holistic, highly skilled, and capable of adapting to the ever-changing economic landscape. 'This ability can only be achieved if our graduates are equipped with knowledge, skills, critical thinking, moral values, and entrepreneurial spirit, ' he said in his text speech at the opening ceremony of the Talent Recruitment and Career Exhibition (Trace) 2025 at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) here today. 'Today is not just an opportunity to find employment but a moment for us to assess the preparedness of Sarawakian and Malaysian youth in facing future waves of change,' he added. His text speech was read by Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, who represented him at the event. The Premier further urged graduates to understand the direction of the state's development so that they can be prepared to contribute to the progress of Sarawak and the nation. He emphasised that the wide availability of job opportunities created by the Sarawak government would only have a meaningful impact if graduates possessed an adaptive mindset, creativity, and a global perspective. Among those present at the event was Unimas Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Alumni Prof Dr Al-Khalid Othman, who represented vice-chancellor Prof Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit. Upgrades for Nangka longhouses

Dr Annuar (standing) during the Gawai Dayak celebration at Rumah Maxwell in Sibu. The ruai and tanju (communal areas) of all 34 longhouses within the Nangka state constituency will be upgraded, says Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee. The Sarawak Education, Innovation and Talent Development Deputy Minister said works would be carried out in stages in line with available funding. 'We will proceed gradually,' said Dr Annuar, who is also Nangka assemblyman. 'There are 34 longhouses in Nangka, and I will endeavour to upgrade the ruai and tanju bit by bit. 'This is because my yearly allocation is only about RM5mil, which must be distributed according to needs across the entire constituency,' he said during the 2025 Gawai Ngabang Programme at Rumah Maxwell in Oya Road, Sibu. Dr Annuar noted that three longhouses in the area still lacked access to clean water due to their remote location, and said this issue would be addressed in stages. Commenting on the Gawai Dayak celebration, Dr Annuar said the festival was a testament to Sarawak's harmonious multi-ethnic society. 'Gawai Dayak is not only celebrated by the Dayak community but also embraced by all ethnic groups in Sarawak. 'This is what makes Sarawak special. We must safeguard this spirit,' he said. During his visit, Dr Annuar also handed over loudspeakers, an audio system and fire extinguishers to residents of Rumah Maxwell. — By ANDY CHUA
