KUCHING (May 17): SMK Saribas in Debak, Betong has been successfully reconstructed under the 'Design and Build' method to provide students with a more conducive and modern learning environment.
Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the school, previously in a dilapidated condition, underwent reconstruction beginning in May 2023, with a total cost of RM10.15 million.
'The Certificate of Completion (CPC) was issued on March 4 this year,' he said during the handing over of the project in Debak today.
The Kapit MP noted that the project reflects the Madani government's continued commitment to enhancing Sarawak's educational ecosystem, particularly through the development of modern, well-equipped infrastructure in rural areas.
The reconstruction project included the construction of an indoor hall, two new classrooms, a Visual Arts Education room, and two Class F teacher housing units.
Additionally, the project involved the demolition of the old Block SAGA and a staff quarters block to make way for the new facilities.
'This project also adopts Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology and Industrialised Building System (IBS) technology to improve construction quality and productivity.
'The design uses the Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) approach where the building is built not only to meet educational needs but also to be sustainable, resilient and suitable for all, including people with disabilities,' said Nanta.
He said the upgraded space is now more comfortable and ergonomic, environmentally friendly, and features improved natural lighting and ventilation while designed for ease of maintenance
Nanta expressed his appreciation to the Works Ministry for its trust and collaborative efforts in overseeing the project until its successful completion.
'The experience and lessons learned are very useful for guidance in the implementation of similar projects in the future.' alexander nanta linggi reconstruction school SMK Saribas

Nanta (right) speaks to reporters after the event today. Nanta said her passing is a profound loss not only to the Abang Johari's family but also to the people of Sarawak, who cherished her warmth and compassion. 'She was truly the Premier's source of strength. As the saying goes, 'Behind every successful man is a woman' and this rang true in her case,' he said. Nanta said this when met by reporters after launching the Periodic Works Balloting Ceremony for G1 to G4 Bumiputera Contractors under the Federal Road Maintenance Contract for Sarawak 2025 at a local hotel here today. The Kapit MP also recalled seeing Juma'ani frequently accompany Abang Johari to official functions, including in remote rural areas like his constituency, which was a testament to her commitment to the people's welfare. 'We have lost someone we held in the highest regard,' he added. In a Facebook post, Nanta extended his condolences to the Premier and his family, describing Juma'ani as a generous and humble figure who was close to the hearts of many. 'Her passing is not only a loss to the family but to all Sarawakians who knew and respected her for her kindness and people-oriented nature. 'May her soul be blessed, her sins forgiven, and her place among the righteous,' he wrote. Juma'ani, 76, passed away at a private medical centre in Kuching at 3.34am today.
