Petros-Petronas: Sarawak Pledges Good Faith Implementation Of Joint Declaration Framework

Barnama22-05-2025

GENERAL
KUCHING, May 22 (Bernama) -- Sarawak is committed to working closely with the federal government, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) to implement the joint declaration framework in good faith.
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state reaffirmed its position that both federal and Sarawak laws must coexist in harmony and be respected by all parties.
'And this declaration gives them a guide on how they (Petronas) are doing their business in collaboration with Petros. Petronas still have to apply for the license to tell us.
'Petros is the gas aggregator, but the authority to produce a license lies with the Ministry for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak (MUT), which has the authority to exempt Petronas, being a national company…we give the exemption to them,' he told reporters at the state assembly building here, today.
Abang Johari said this to explain the joint declaration between the federal and state governments signed yesterday.
The Premier also gave assurance that the declaration will not be abolished even if there is a change of government in the future.
He also reiterated that the declaration is a clear manifestation of mutual respect and recognition of Sarawak's regulatory framework, particularly the State Distribution of Gas Ordinance 2016 (DGO 2016).
Yesterday, the federal and state governments reached an understanding on matters involving Petronas and Petros. The joint declaration framework was signed at Perdana Putra by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Abang Johari.
Meanwhile, when asked whether the declaration would impact the ongoing court cases between Petros and Petronas, Abang Johari said the state government will leave the matter to the legal team to decide.

According to a joint statement, the partnership, formalised today with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two parties, would begin with the 2025 AEIOU Financial Literacy and Biodiversity Programme in Sabah. The transformative initiative aims to nurture young leaders with practical money management skills and ecological awareness, and under the theme 'AEIOU for Responsible Living: Smarter Finances, Caring for Nature, Greener Choices', the programme would engage 160 pupils from 20 schools in Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, and Tuaran. 'The programme will be conducted through an immersive blend of physical and virtual workshops, project-based learning, and interactive simulations,' the statement read. Alliance Bank Group Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer, Dr Aaron Sum, was quoted in the statement as saying that, 'By teaching schoolchildren to make smart financial choices while understanding their impact on the environment, we're shaping a generation that's not just money-wise but planet-wise too'. Meanwhile, Roots & Shoots Malaysia President T.P. Lim said Roots & Shoots Malaysia had worked closely with local NGOs and corporate partners in Malaysia to co-create programmes for young people that connect the head to the heart, leading to long-term behavioural change, for the past ten years. 'In this unique collaboration, we are excited to work with the talented team from Alliance Bank and thrilled to have biodiversity knowledge being introduced to young school children in such a fun and engaging way,' he said. According to the statement, AEIOU, a flagship CSR programme by Alliance Bank, was first introduced in 2015 and had engaged over 150,000 primary school children over the span of seven editions, offering financial literacy workshops, biodiversity game simulation, and 'Biodiversity Challenge'. The use of comic storytelling, virtual currency, and eco-preneurship simulations further enhances engagement, making learning both meaningful and memorable.

Old school SMS becomes lifeline as Iran blocks roaming, WhatsApp amid escalating tensions, says Malaysia's ambassador

Published on: Monday, June 23, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 23, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: A total of 24 individuals, including 17 Malaysians, who were evacuated from Iran following escalating conflict in the country, have safely returned home. — Bernama pic SEPANG: As tensions in Iran escalated following Israel's retaliatory strikes, residents in the country were forced to rely on the old-school Short Message Service (SMS) to stay in touch with family members and relevant parties. Malaysia's Ambassador to Iran, Khairi Omar, said roaming services in the country, including WhatsApp, are currently blocked. 'In Iran, SMS communication is still open between local Iranian numbers. Domestically, people can still stay in touch. However, if we try to call an Iranian number from here, it won't go through, as roaming services have been shut down. But calls from Iran to outside the country are still possible. So, we've resorted to the old-fashioned way, text messages, which not many people use anymore. 'WhatsApp messages and similar platforms were completely inaccessible, though I believe some access is gradually returning, but still tightly controlled to ensure that sensitive information related to security issues isn't leaked,' he spoke to reporters last night. He arrived from Iran with a group of 24 individuals, comprising 17 Malaysians, six Iranian dependents of Malaysian citizens, and one Singaporean. Khairi said the situation in Iran was volatile, with both foreign nationals and locals equally shocked by the severity of the attack, which he described as drastic. Advertisement 'After a day or two, we began to observe a pattern in the attacks. They were more intense at night, while during the day, it seemed as though both sides had come to a mutual understanding to scale back the assaults. 'As we all know, they already identified the targets, and if one side launched a strike on certain facilities, the other side would respond. But we were always on high alert because if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, you could easily find yourself in a situation you definitely wouldn't want to be in,' he said. The government ordered the temporary closure of the Malaysian Embassy in Iran, instructing all embassy personnel in the country to return home immediately. Meanwhile, a trader, Fadhil Yusni, 33, expressed his gratitude at being reunited with his wife, Zainab Ganood, an Iranian national who was visiting her parents. 'I panicked because I couldn't reach my wife. Alhamdulillah, tonight I feel grateful. Thank you to the government and the Foreign Ministry for evacuating my wife out of Iran,' he said, adding that he is now finding the best way to help his wife's family leave the conflict-stricken country safely.
